leadership is something learned through trial and error. Leadership starts with self-leadership, and leading by example is one of the best gateways to becoming a better leader. But it can't stop there. It helps to be around successful leaders and learning from their counsel, forged from their own mistakes and successes.

Well to me this sounds like a guy learning to be a supervisor in an office or something.

I feel you though...cuz I learned from playing with the old school guys. There are times where they had the ball and was stuck and they would yell "come get it youngster!!". Or in between scores they would be telling me things....but still thats just learning the game.

A leader is that guy that when things go wrong they rally the guys to focus and steer guys in the right direction to make sure things get back on track. They pick guys up when they are down. They put guys in check that think they are bigger than the team or think its not that serious.

Did Duhon depart from this team and it wasn't reported? I thought everyone was saying that he was suppose to be a team leader and general a couple of months ago? Wasn't he suppose to represent Pringles on the court? High BB IQ and all that good stuff? Wasn't there threads about him becoming team captain? What happen?

If we take the players who would fit the system in the upcoming draft, the dozen or so guys that we've all been mentioning, which of those guys has shown any signs of being able to be a leader.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

I think he has leadership qualities and has shown leadership this season. But you need more than Chris Duhon. You need a team of winners or one great player. Chris Duhon alone isn't going to lead this team anywhere.
I just hope that people will like me

Guilty as charged. Guess I laid the Management 101 lingo on too thick huh?

But my point was that leadership is like playing defense... you can do it if you want to, and work at it. But obviously some people are built better for it.

I'll add though, you need to have people who recognize your leadership. That isn't always the fault of the leader, some people thrive off of rebellion, or think they are "all alone". ;)

That's who I thought of too. Maybe Jennings. Rubio if he knows English.

Anybody check the Spurs/Golden State game last night???

Kurt Thomas missed 2 free throws with 4 seconds left with a one point lead...

I don't know what Mike Finley was thinking but you can see him telling Kurt Thomas what he should have did..kind of jesturing to him to shoot it higher that way it has a better chance of going in....

Enter the leadership...Tim Duncan walks in towards them, mushes Finley in the shoulder and embraces Kurt Thomas grabs his head and starts to encourage him. Roger Mason was right there as well. I can imagine what Duncan was telling him..."don't think about it. You're our best free throw shooter! we gonna need you in the future. don't you dare put ur head down!"

Thats leadership...its great to see. There is no doubt that Tim Duncan has control of his guys. He is a true leader. I mean when he comes in and shoves Finley to the side I'm like "yeah son!!!" cuz as a teamate you have to be right there for your boys good or bad. Finley was totally wrong in coming in to chastise Kurts form.

Knicks:

Ok so where is the veteran getting in David Lee's face about protecting the basket? Not disrespecting but telling him what he needs to do as a teamate. Where is that guy to step up and tell Nate Robinson not to yell, "coooooommme oooooon maaaaaaaan!!!!" because Wilcox can't read his mind on a pass? Nate should have simply told Wilcox in an encouraging way like this, "my bad man my bad...you gotta come around baseline on that play. don't worry about it, play D, play D"...maybe later on a time-out he could walk up to Wilcox and repeat it in a positive way giving him a pound....I mean yo thats what I would do!!!

I understand more than anything that this team has no leadership at all. Thats always been the problem. I think D'antoni has changed the culture but on the court??? there is nobody out there that keeps the troops together.

Don't you dare say Q!!!! You never see Q doing anything I talked about above.

Donnie should seriously look into bringing in some leaders...not just a star player....knicks need some high charecter guys. I seriously can't point out one guy that is a bonified leader. The Knicks are too easily rattled and they complain and get down on each other too fast. Even D'antoni said it. I would seriously shake up this team in the off-season. Knicks need to bring in some Charecter guys.

See this is exactly the leadership that we've been missing since Donnie got rid of Marbury.
What a short sighted move. Marbury is not only the best point guard in the NBA, but also
a tremendous on-court leader that all his teammates look up to and respect.

Not that he can really assert himself as a leader at this point because he's only a rookie on a team of older players and the fact that he hasnt even been on the court at all recently, BUT....

I think that in time Gallinari will turn into a strong leader on this team. He's shown some great teamsmanship in the few instances we've had to see him on the court. Whether it be complementing other players for good passes or plays or not being afraid to take big shots in big moments, I feel like he's already showed us something in his limited time on the court.

He played in Italy as the leader of his team at like 17 years old. When and / or if he is able to get himself healthy and get on the court, I have a good feeling that he'll be able to stand out as a leader on this team in the future

I think leaders are born that way, but nurtured to be more effective. You have the have the core elements of a leader to really be able to step forward and take the action that's needed and not do stupid things that don't help the team. For example Steph's idea of leadership. No matter how much training you gave him he's just not a leader. At least not a good one.

We can bring in a guy that has a history of solid leadership like Nash and it would make a big difference. Then we have to continue to look to draft kids that have those qualities as well. It's not rocket science. The big thing is that you want a leader who is one of your best players or else it doesn't work.
