Gallinari To Have Surgery?

Mar 24, 2009 9:12 AM EST
Marc Berman cites a person familiar with the situation who says that Danilo Gallinari is expected to have "minor surgery" on his back to alleviate the pain resulting from a bulging disc.

The procedure would be much less invasive than most disc surgeries, involving a small shaving down of a nerve on which the disc is putting pressure.

"He'll sit down with the doctors and Donnie and decide what's best for him," Mike D'Antoni said. "Sometime this week they'll make a decision."

There appears to be a consensus among the specialists Gallinari visited, which is that he can continue resting his back or have minor surgery to alleviate the pain.

If he has the surgery, Gallinari would be ready to participate in summer league games in July.

I hope they don't shave down his nerve that seems like something he would never recover from. They probably will shave down the bone that comes in contact with the nerve. Shaving the nerve would leave him numb or paralyzed in some area of the lower extremity of the body.

I know surgery sounds scary, but this doesn't sound like a huge procedure. Yes - I understand you don't want a 20yr old to have this kind of surgery, but to me, it sounds like if he has to have some sort of surgery on this back, this doesn't sound horribly invasive.

It's great the article says that Gallo will be ready for Summer League, frankly, because he needs it. Let's all just hope for the best with this procedure and we see Gallo take a few *pain-free* steps forward this offseason and into next year.

Serious thread hi-jacking here.. but what time do you usually work to? I hate getting out later than 5 so the early start suits me. I'd actually rather do 8-5

Maybe numbness would be a good thing? If he can't feel his legs, he won't feel any pain?

You want sensation to some degree, imagine being numb and him running up and down the floor, it won't be a pretty sight. Its like when you go to the dentist and have your gum numbed, you are drooling saliva all over the place. just imagine being numb in the legs. You don't touch the nerve or play with nervous system. Most likely the procedure will be to shave the bone around the nerve to alleviate the pressure the bone might be placing on the nerve.

In order to calm the nerves of worried Knicks fans, it has been decided that the procedure will be broadcast live on Gallinari's web site. The piece of sliced nerve will be auctioned off on ebay.

If Knick management was smart we would have Anthony Randolph right now and we wouldnt have to worry or talk about this crp. We would have the most exciting young player in the game--what an exciting two way talent this kid is. How the heck could the Knicks miss that? Oh wait a second this is the team that drafted Channing Frye over Bynum. This is the team that gave away 9 number 1 picks for Eddy Curry when the Bulls were trying to retire the guy. This is the team that drafts a good player David Lee and wants to get rid of him. It's a circus--this is a ridiculous problem we have here with this kid. Atleast we can expect one thing from the Knicks--they will arrogantly F up again.

I don't think anyone who plays 14 minutes a game for 28 games can be called a glue guy. I think you have to hope for two things, Gallo recovers, and the organization learned not to get tricky with its high lottery picks.

First I said the "glue guy" thing meaning that him not being out there hurt our record. Look who he is sharing the ball with (Harrington and Nate - These are not "glue guys"). What I was saying is that we probably are getting a better pick this year due to him not being out there and hopefully him being back 100% next year along with a better pick this year (As a result) is a hidden blessing.

Gallo is what he is regardless of 14 minutes a game for 28 games or all the games. And that is, he is a team player. Your point is off with minutes played as minutes played (small or large) does not change a players basketball character.

They picked the best player at that pick, I believe that, the thing is he got hurt and to add to that nobody knew of him.
I like Lopez for a half court team and we have Nate so I didn't want Gordon... Randolph is the guy I did want, but I'm content with Gallo (for now).

As many, including myself, have said before, this is something that can only be evaluated fully a few years from now. Hopefully, with a healed back, Gallinari will be able to show everything he is capable of doing. You can't make a true evaluation of a player who you have only seen play injured.

Randolph is a physical talent with many skills, and teams knew that his upside was greater than many players drafted last year, but he has yet to prove that he can have consistent success in a team oriented offense. Why do you think Nelson does not play him the minutes you probably think he deserves? Nelson may have issues as a coach, but he has always stressed team ball over a 1/1 selfish game, and you can be sure that Randolph's inability to play under control is why his minutes are sporadic. Randolph would have been well served if he had stayed in college another year, and if his game had improved at all he would have probably been a top 5 (or lower) pick in this draft.

I would take Lopez, and then Gordon, over Randolph in the "we could have picked them over Gallo" category, anyway.

I had Lopez ranked very high too--in fact I thought he was pick 4 to Seattle so I didnt think about him. My list was
Randolph Westbrook Mcgee and I stand by those picks--I made those picks when no one mentioned their names[meaning Mcgee and Randolph]
Randolph plays slightly out of control because he is going at 110% with tremendous full court energy--thats why at 19 years old he has the ability to get 13 points 9 rebounds block 5 shots and add two assists against the Spurs in 24 minutes. Thats what I love about the prospect--yes there is development time but he can produce in a big way to help the team now. I know that if we had taken Randolph---NY fans would be in love right now and we'd be in the playoffs. He would have offered the shot blocking presence we do not have next to David but also the scoring and rebounding figures as well. He can impact on both ends and run the floor like a deer--thats what we needed

A 20 year old, professional basketball player with a bad back. Who requires surgery to alleviate pain after playing a whole 28 games for no more than 15 minutes in any of those games after a period of significant rest. You don't have to be a back specialist, Einstein or Nostradamus to know the Knicks F'd it up big time. I don't care if you wait til the year 3009 to evaluate him. They F'd it up.
