Sims is a pretty unique prospect as far as the D-League is concerned. He has great size, nice length and a decent (although certainly improvable) frame, to go along with solid athleticism. His hands are very good and his touch is absolutely terrific, making him an excellent presence in the post at this level of competition. Right off the bat he showed a very good feel for the game, making some heady post-entry passes on high/low plays.

What really separates him from other D-League big men is his ability to create his own shot. He can put the ball on the floor and has very nice footwork and wherewithal in the post, executing pivot moves and spinning to either shoulder to get his shot off. He lacks strength finishing around the rim or trying to back down his man while grinding in the post, but the skill-level of his finesse moves allow him to create high percentage opportunities on a regular basis when he’s getting touches. He also showed the ability to step out to mid-range and knock down 18 foot jumpers, again showing great touch, which is certainly reflected in his free throw stroke—at over 75% on the season. He gets to the line at a great rate (his ability to attack defenses off the dribble plays a huge role here), which is a big reason why he’s been scoring at such a nice rate this season.

Defensively, Sims still has plenty of room for improvement, as he gave up position far too easily in the paint and also did a poor job for the most part rotating to meet slashers in the paint. He has the length to contest shots, but does not have very good awareness on this end of the floor, probably lacking some toughness as well as strength. Considering what his role would be in the NBA, this is definitely an issue if he’s to see quality minutes as a rotation player. He seems to lose his focus quite easily, especially when a bad call goes against him—leading him to completely lose his composure.

Well thought out post Mr. Earl but I will add one big (negative) thing that was mentioned about Sims in an article I read earlier in the season. And that is that he is a half court center and not high in athleticism. I don't think he is suited for a running team (according to that article), but I'm excited to see that we signed him to go and find out. He clearly has a polished offensive game and the article said he was more opportunistic and played his spots well on defense, in regards to his blocked shots (In other words he is not an athletic shot blocker).

Hopefully he gets some minutes,

earthman - I cannot accept any praise for a cut and paste job. I just thought some second hand research (courtesy of Draft Express) was in order.

the very weak point that you cite, his endurance (running) seems to be a trait that Sims has worked to improve.

The only good thing about signing Samb and Sims is that it shows management realizes that we need an upgrade at the center position. Samb and Sims are guys they are testing out to be our backup center. Hopefully, they have a plan for getting a starting center because Lee is not going to cut it and Curry is a lost cause.

Its such a kick in the nuts to see Curry sitting on the bench while we send out forwards to play against Howard.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

What's the point if he doesn't play? Samb and Nichols have been here for almost 3 weeks and played 2 games in garbage time. Q still plays 25+ MPG and Jeffries still gets time. Makes no sense to me.

I think the point is to have guys competing for roster spots... the other players see that. I think it's more about the message it sends to the Isiah Thomas guys

agree 100%. I'll never understand how they structure these contract to allow for people to collect paychecks while being too out of shape to play.

Well, it was a very nice cut and paste job, and you deserve credit for it.

Thanks for the honesty, but then I'll give you props like BasketballJones did

I was not saying he was lazy and needed better endurance. From what I remembered the article said he was slow footed, very methodical and not at all fast. It never mentioned his endurance, but let's see what happens. Free look...

According to a French website, Sims just signed a 10-day contract with the Knicks. However, I can't find any confirmation elsewhere.

Got excited when I first saw the D-League numbers a couple of months ago. Then I actually sat there one night and looked closely at the archived games of him on the NBDL website and came away less than impressed. He didn't look like a guy that could dominate a game like his numbers suggest. Still, he's big and he's got ability. He can really shot the ball - was at the game the other night against the Magic - during warmups, Sims was hitting every 15-17 footer he put up. All net. The signing can't hurt. Let's see what happens. Maybe with some minutes he could be a better version of Channing Frye, who knows...

Channing Frye couldn't block a shot. I thought Sims was a shot blocker, no?

From the game footage I saw a couple of month ago he looks to be a finesse type on offense and not as physical or active on the defensive end as you would think given the lofty rebounding/shot-blocking D-League numbers. But who knows, play the damn guy and lets see. Use these last few games to see if guys like Sims and Nichols can actually play and be contributors. We suck - pushing the regulars 35+ mins. to make the playoffs should no longer be the goal. Couldn't care less if we're still mathmatically in it - it's just not realistic anymore... Signing these guys just to sign them, to play them in garbage time or with the intent to only use them if one of our regulars can't go that particular game is stupid IMO. Why even sign guys like Sims & Nichols and then never bother to get them in a game and get them some burn? I mean we already have Wilcox and he barely plays. This should be audition time no??? We make decisions for all the wrong reasons as far as I'm concerned. So frustrating. Can't wait for them to screw up another draft. Watch, that'll be next...
