good thing we didn't trade those guys at the deadline. *whew*

I still don't have a huge problem with it. I know you disagree with me on that though.

I still think we'll have plenty of opportunity to pull off a deal like Sonics/Magic worked out for Rashard as JW showed us early.

if we end up trading for a player like Rashard Lewis then i'll be even more upset we didn't trade those guys for draft picks at the trade deadline.

Huh?

Not trading for Rashard Lewis. The Sonics got back a 9mill trade exception and a 2nd round pick when Rashard Lewis signed his restricted FA deal with the Magic and the Sonics matched and then traded him to Orlando.

Just let Nate and Lee walk it doesn't make much difference if they are Knicks or not the team will suck with them and might not suck without them. S&T or just let them go.

This was the Lewis RFA trade:
The Magic sent Seattle a conditional second-round pick, while the SuperSonics earned a trade exception believed to be in the $9 million range.

D Lee for a trade exception & a conditional 2nd round pick is better than a top 8 lottery pick at the trade deadline like i was suggesting we do? come on dude, for real?

No, obviously not bro. Never said it was.

I'm just saying, we're not going to lose either for nothing and I would venture to guess we'd be able to work out a pretty good sign and trade for both of them.

Knicks are in the driver seat here. They can match whatever contract the market dictates- which may not be $10 mil a year. If the contract is huge- they can work out a sign a trade and get some assets back. Or Lee can roll the dice, take a 1 year qualifying offer and hope to break the bank as a UFA in 2010- when several teams will have major money free and the economy could be better. The Knicks will have a better chance of extending him then too.

they're not really in any driver's seat, because if a team wants Lee bad enough to offer him a huge contract & the Knicks match, then the pressure is on the Knicks to get back some kind of asset for him in a sign & trade w/that same team or else be laden w/that huge albatross for the next 5-6 years... u saw how very little the Sonics got back in that trade w/Orlando discussed by JW & nyk... we'd be lucky as hell to get back expirings & a conditional late 1st round pick at this point... i think the Knicks really missed out on their chance to deal him for better assets at the trade deadline personally... the one hope that i have right now is that some team like Phoenix comes calling in regards to a possible trade for Amare... i think that's our most reasonably realistic chance at landing a stud this offseason, & the chances of that happening are pretty slim at that.

Would you sign and trade Lee to Portland for the 23rd overall and the 3rd pick of the 2nd round?

That is pretty crappy value, even for Lee. He is worth more than that around the league I'd think.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

You're not going to get full value for a restricted free agent. At the trade deadline you had a chance to but not now.

You can't trade a restricted free agent or unrestricted agent before sign them to a contract. You're aren't allow to sign free agents of any kind until August 1. Their contracts effectively runs out when that final buzzer goes off in the last game of the NBA Finals. Whatever Walsh does with Lee and Nate concerning draft picks won't be for the 2009 draft.

Can you make the deal and just not announce it until Aug 1st? That's kind of what Walsh did in Indiana with Jonathan Bender. Toronto drafted him for Walsh and the trade was announced on Aug 1. It wasn't a sign and trade though.

If that's true then it was even dumber not to trade Lee and Nate at the deadline.

All sides would have to agree but basically you just violated the CBA so you could also be subject to losing future picks. Davis was still under contract. You can trade players that are still under contract on draft day.

You can announce the trades later. They talked about it after this past draft.

The 2009 Free Agency period is between 7/1 and 7/9 (players can start signing on the 9th)

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)
