on most mock drafts, they still have Derozan going in the mid-round.

yeah, but on those same mock draft sites he was a pre-season top-5 pick... last year DeAndre Jordan was a the third overall on nbadraft.net and DX. What happens is people get excited about young, athletic guys, and then when they play like young, inexperienced guys they get penalized.

The potential is there with DeRozan. The Knicks don't have a pick next year... so I'm all about swinging for the fences. He was great in the Pac-10 tourney

so where do you see him going?

We got into a debate about this the other day... TMS and BRIGGS thoguht he would get taken 3-7 because of his potential. I think the earliest he gets taken is five, but more likely than not the latter part of the lotto. SGs tend to fall in drafts because if you strikeout on the pick, you get a guy like Dajuan Wagner, because SG do one thing: shoot.

Harden is the consensus number one SG prospect (though I don't agree) and Henderson might get taken before DeRozan because he plays for Duke... These mock draft sites don't factor in one thing: team need. They're figuring more who is the best player.

I'll say he falls 7-15, but more likely to be 9-12 (if the ping pong balls fall where they should). Look at the lotto teams:

SAC: Martin
Washington: Young
Clippers: Gordon
Memphis: Mayo
OKC: Durant/Westbrook
Minnesota: Foye
Golden State: Crawful/Ellis
Toronto: need a SG
Indiana: Rush
Charlotte: need a SG/SF... so whoever they think best because Wallace is versatile and they have Bell
NY: need a SG of the future
Chicago: we got Hughes for a reason
Phoenix: Richardson

Really comes down to Toronto/Charlotte/us... so without knowing how the ping pong balls fall its hard to say... unless he explodes in the tournament.

I agree with all that...good analysis. I have him going in that range as well. Barring something ridiculous, we will probably have a shot at taking him so I wouldnt by into the Derozan hysteria just yet.

there's no way in hell that all those teams pass up Derozan... all of those teams could use an uber athletic SG w/great size & potential to slot into their young rotation... of course it all depends on how he plays in the Tourney but based on his last couple games his stock seems to be shooting up real fast.

i told u guys at the trade deadline that both guys should be traded for extra 1st round picks so that we'd have some pieces to either use in a draft night trade, move up in the lottery, or use to address holes in the roster, & i was pretty much lambasted... now we're seeing kids like Griffin & Derozan looking like future superstars, & w/o those extra picks to parlay w/our own we have much less of a shot to move up in the draft to take a prospect w/that type of potential, or even to make a draft night trade for an already established NBA player.

we're gonna be stuck w/either having to pay over market value to sign Lee & Nate to albatross contracts that will be difficult to move in future years, or watching them leave NY for nothing in return... hate to belabor the point, but i did tell u so.

Walsh just needs to be a tough negotiator. The market is not going to be plentiful this year as teams are worried about the luxury tax. Walsh just needs to play hard ball and try to keep Lee at or below $9 mill and Nate at or below $7 million. If he can do that, we should still have a shot at signing 1 max player in 2010.

What Walsh has to worry about now is at team like Sacramento giving Nate a full mle, and a OKC overpaying for lee and offering 5 yrs 55 million then you stand to lose both of them for nothing.

If someone wants to overpay like that then be my guest. Lee/Nate will not have the same successes in a different offense and those contracts will look TERRIBLE.
