The PG we draft will have to be a player who MDA believes can be the embodiment of his-MDA's- offensive philosophy. I tend to think that he would want someone who he thinks can run his offense over a guy who rates higher in other areas.
I would think that people should be thinking about how MDA would look at the available PG prospects in this draft, and making comments from that perspective.
Why? Who cares about his philosophy. That's what got you Gallinari over other prospects. Professional coaches come and go. Players normally outlast coaches. For all I know Dolan has a change of heart if the Knicks don't make the playoffs and fire everyone. Or if the Knicks are lucky to get Lebron or Wade, they may not get along with him or like his style after a full season. It's not like that never happen before. A team should never draft based on system of a coach. That's is short sighted. A professional coach should always be able to adjust to their players not the other way around. I would suggest MDA find a collegiate school if he only wants to recruit players that fit his system. The NBA is a player's league.
So you believe that a GM would not ask a coach about a possible draft pick- and that a coach would not want a player who fits within his offensive philosophy?
Does not matter if you care about his philosophy, though- if the Knicks draft a PG it has to be someone he is in love with or thinks he can mold. I don't have a preference as to who we should choose, I just think that if you consider PGs you have to really think about what MDA will be looking for, since it will be someone he will want to develop. I will say this, though- he will take a PG with who is big on the fundamentals, with a high BB IQ (yeah- it is an overused phrase) who is less spectacular but makes fewer mistakes, than a guy who some of you would have orgasms over because of dunking ability or the ability to do a crossover that leaves an opponent on his ass.
I'm sure he can adjust to players he is given, but if he has a chance to voice his opinion on a PG, he is going to be looking at how the guy might play in his system of ball, and Walsh would probably go along with his choice.
Whether or not you believe in his BB philosophy is one thing- I like a more traditional half-court style with some strong big men, screens set for my jump shooters, and a tough D- but at this point the Knicks have chosen to go with MDA, and a person would have to be obtuse if they think that a former PG who is now a head coach would not take a great interest in any PG his team thinks about choosing.
