I don't remember the Pistons having much of an inside game..

the key is, sheed and ben controlled the paint and can match dwights physical play,

See above.

I agree with Briggs for the most part. We dont have a center or anything resembling one right now aside from Wilcox who is rusty to say the least. I think DW knows its a need which is why he traded for Wilcox in the first place. not saying Wilcox is the answer there, but I dont think its a mystery that we have a huge need at that position.

It doesnt help that Howard is the best frontcourt player in the league.

Size in the middle is an issue. Short term having Chandler and Harrington at the 2/3 helps on the boards but until we get a center playing decent basketball its going to be a weakness most nights.

Is this going to morph into a "we need BJ" thread?

which is why I like amare. He is versatile, physical and big... although people rag his defense, he can play with a guy like dwight in the paint, whereas lee was just manhandled... I do agree with briggs here.. we need a big in the middle, and just not any big..

which leads to this question.. if gallo is projected as our future starting PF, what happens to lee? unless we plan to play gallo at the 3 and chandler at the 2.

the roster looks like it's going to be shaped for a guard oriented player (if they're married to lee). that's why nate should be starting at pg and not duhon. it's tough to find a scoring type center so you're basically looking at hustle guys at the 4/5 spot. which means a bulk of the offense must be generated from the 1/2/3 spots. gallo is not a 4 and will never be a 4 - at least in the traditional sense. and he doesn't have the uber athleticism that marion has to put him at that spot.

he doesn't have the athleticism of a marion, but he has more size and length.. with added bulk, could he not play that role that diaw did? I don't see why not... just a thought...

I don't see a prob with Gallo and Lee. Took Lee 4 years just to get where he is now and probably take Gallo the same amount of time or more where he is fully developed. We are talking a good 3 years down the line.

my point is... do they want to groom gallo for the 4 spot? walsh talks about him being a future PF? if so, then do you sign lee, long term? it took lee 4 years, but skill wise, gallo is further ahead at 20 than lee was at 22.. the big thing for gallo will be adding strength and in this offense, we know dantoni, likes his forwards to be able to shoot and pass... plus, we all can see, lee is not the long term answer at the 5.

you never want to lose assets, so if you have to you resign Lee. If Gallo turns out to be a starter at the four who you can win with, you can always trade a player later. Donnie just got to make sure the contracts are reasonable, etc.

Can Gallo play the 3?

I think gallo can play the three, but the problem is, with the emergence of wilson, do you now put him at the 2? can wilson thrive there? or are we better served with gallo at the 4(down the road a year or two from now) wilson at the 3, get a legit SG and athletic center?

d'antoni doesn't work well with *traditional* centers. i think he'd much rather go with the two PF lineup.

That's Ok. I'm not thinking short term. I'm thinking long term. That is why I want us to get Lamar Odom for the short term and have that 7 footer for periods of time off the bench as he develops. Coaches on average don't last more than 3 years in the NBA. You can't base the personnel strictly on what the coach may or may not think he needs. I'm sure they will address the issue but I would have to think that Donnie Walsh understands we need a C for the long term.

I thought that was Walsh's plan for this season. Correct me if I'm wrong but Walsh penciled in Gallo at the 4 this season. He wanted Wilson at the 3. He indicated this on draft night. Best made plans of mice and men.

do you really think all plans are set in stone and can't change based off of how well/bad players perform?

We are a .400 team. I know people get caught up in 2010 and building a team around whatever star we land, but on the more realistic note I think we are still evaluating the talent we have here and trying to add building block type players that fit into a style of play we are commited to.

As for Gallo I expect a pretty normal learning curve. Year 1 learn what it takes to play in this league. Year 2 get your game to fit to the NBA and play a role off the bench. Year 3 be a solid contributor.

we need a star, period... we don't have one... even w/Nate & D Lee playing the best ball of their careers we're still a 9 games below .500 team... u guys seriously need to wake the F up & look at the roster.
