Why do we try so hard to hate our own players?

I dunno that we hate a blanket hate of our own players. I think we are passionate about our players, which translates to both love and hate, depending on the situation-- but rarely casual indifference.

The amount of man-crushes on this site probably equals the amount of playa-hatred.

Gallo will forever be compared to what he could have been-- until he is better than both Eric Gordon and Brook Lopez, he will be despised for what he is not. This is especially compounded by the fact that one of Gallo's strongest traits was that he was an experienced professional having played pro ball in Italy since he was 16... to see that he is unable to meaningfully compete in the NBA this season gives unpleasant reminders of past draft picks Frederic Weis, Macie Lampe, Slavko Vranes etc... I am not sure that we beleived we had a development project as a draft pick at #6 as a good player with high upside. We still have the upside, but so far we are missing the good player. At the 6 spot, I think we were entitled to a good player with high upside.

But compare the despise of our own players with the amount of love shown to Chris No-D Duhon, David No-D Lee, and blackhole nebula of Al Harrington and Nate Robinson. The pure adoration for them is a bit more than would be warranted if there was a true superstar to lead the pack-- but as the saying goes, if you can't be with the one you love (i.e. LBJ), then love the one you're with...
You know I gonna spin wit it

Passion does not equal irrational. You don't have to slam/love every move a guy makes to be passionate about your team.

I agree. This is exactly how New Yorkers view there team and will not change. Doesn't mean it isn't irrational and stupid.

You really think that just cuz Gallo had some Euro pro experience that we all think he was a lock to be strong from the start? I think most of us who liked the Gallo pick felt he was gonna need an adjustment period and on top of that he needed to be healthy in the summer to get off to a good start.

That said I don't think it's a disaster how he's played so far. Gallo has shown me enough to at least see that with some mental confidence and physical growth, he can really be effective at this level. The only thing that seems to stop Gallo is Gallo. I'm seeing the guy make rookie mistakes and he clearly needs more work than we could've possibly known before the draft. Still I LOVE his talent and skill level.

Lopez is physically ahead of Gallo and has had the advantage of the weight lifting and training programs in the U.S. Almost ALL Euro players come with that disadvantage. I think it's fair that up to this point Gallo has been underwhelming in comparison to Lopez and Gordon, but this is very early on and I can think of other guys that started off slowly, but surpassed others who got off to great starts in this league.
