What did the guy say that wasn't true? You do realize that the Knicks are in the position to lose Lee and Nate for absolutely nothing this summer or severely handicap themselves in their oft stated goal of being a major player in free agency in the summer of 2010. And Jeffries and Curry would still be on the roster as Walsh chose not to use $28M in expiring contracts, Nate and Lee and the ability to eat another team's salary for a year. So many wasted opportunities.
if we end up losing Lee & Nate w/o getting anything back in return i'd say that might be a realistic assumption, but i don't think Donnie would let it get to that anyway, so it's sorta a moot point... he's either gonna sign & trade those guys for a player that will help this team, or he'll hold onto them... either way, he'd be a moron for letting them walk w/o getting anything back in return.
My point wasn't that they were going to lose them for nothing. It's that if they do sign and trade them or hold onto them all together, it severly hampers their ability to sign even a single top free agent in 2010. But if they do lose either of them for nothing, it would be ridiculously moronic.
One way or another the team has put itself in an enormous Catch-22 situation.
I think your wrong here. First
at most the cap hit between Nate and Lee will be around 15M in 2010/11. Without going through the numbers we should have room for one max contract.
Unless we are getting either Lebron or Wade nobody out there is worth max dollars. Does anyone want Bosh after this past weekend AT MAX DOLLARS.
Another thing is Curry will be under enormous pressure to at least redo his contract this summer since he has an optout. Since he was looking for the Knicks to front him some cash last year I think come this summer he would opt out on condition that the Knicks will max him out next year and Curry waiving his final year, upping his salary to around 17M. Yes he would lose about 4.5M on the deal but can make up some if not all by latching on to another club. In regards to Jeffries, he also has a player option for 2010/11. And unlike Curry's his contract is moveable. If not, he could be bought out for lets say 3.5M and I'm sure he can make what he would lose(3.3M) back with another club (Wiz?)
