You don't develop with playing time. You develop with hard work. Chandler made a huge leap from rookie to 2nd year. That work was done in the summer.

Hi Bippity. At this point you want to give the kid as much exposure as you can. As far as hard work goes, are you assuming that the kid doesn't work hard? This summer will be his first off season AFTER playing NBA basketball first hand. This off season, he will have a lot to work on and I don't necessarily feel that if we want to make a push that we should sacrifice the team to develop him during the season. However, if he can contribute to the overall effort of the team, than any real game experience he can get will only help him reach the level that we hope he can reach.

Am I off base with my thinking?

When did I make any assumption about his work ethic? I'm just trying to debunk the false notion that a guy needs to be playing to develop. Most skills improvement is done during the offseason. Any minutes he can get are invaluable and you hope to give the guy as many minutes as possible but........if he is not ready you do not just give him minutes just because you want to "develop" the guy. You have a better chance of ruining his confidence and hurting your team than you do of having him "develop". He'll get time when he's ready. And if he is a good player that works hard he will not be held back by not receiving a lot of minutes. I was using Chandler as an example

Bip wasn't critiquing his work habits, just pointing out when players best improve.

Yea, someone should tell Eric Gordon and his 15 PPG, DJ Augustin's 12.5 PPG, and Brook Lopez and his 12.6 PPG and 8.1 RPG.

Clearly, playing time isn't helping them!

Big difference. Those guys are ready for the minutes they are getting. Gallinari is not. Those guys are better than anyone else in their role, Gallinari so far is not. He will get minutes when he earns them. That's how life works. Handing minutes to a guy that has not earned them turns them into Chris Mihm, Steve Francis, Eddie Curry etc.

Don't disagree about those guys being ready for minutes. But disagree with the last part about handing guys minutes turning them into something.

I think handing guys minutes exposes players for what they are, or aren't.

Thus far, Gallo is starting to look like a bust. He probably needs to get stronger & a whole lot of other things.

But smart guys learn from mistakes. Take David Lee vs. San Antonio & fouling out. He's smart, and he learned.

You guys are speculating becuase MDA and the coaching staff could be ordering him to stay on the perimeter. He looks shell shock every so often, deer in headlights, how ever you want call it.

one thing is for certain, he will be a very good player, just don't expect him to be cut up, or hitting the weight room. He will improve his foot work and strength gradually, but his shoting will get better a lot faster then any other part of his game

David Lee held Tim Duncan in check for most of the game though, besides the 4th when he was in bad trouble. He had to use every 6 of his fouls, but he did his job. I was very proud of him. His performance was overshadowed only by Kryptonate, but don't worry DLee. You didn't go unnoticed by the Great Allanfan20.

What bar are you going to? I just grabbed a Colt45 in the East Village myself.

first couple games & that would have been a good excuse. At this point, if he doesn't understand the system either he is a moron, or the coaching staff is inept. I don't believe either to be true, which leaves the third option...

There are lots of excuses that can be made for Gallinari and all of them have some legitamacy. However, this may have been the deepest draft in the history of the NBA and the Knicks could have had a franchise talent with the 6th pick. Gallo obviously isn't at the level as his lottery peers are despite playing against 'men' as a professional in Italy. He has a nice shot and at times appears to have lots of confidence. However, most of his defiencies appear to be related to his athleticism and unless that is totally related to his back injury the Knicks blew it.

I don't see why you'd call this one of the deepest drafts in NBA history. This draft pool is about average so far.

It was deep with a lot of good talent- not great talent.

I think you are looking at it from a fan perspective. We need to see the guy to understand his game. The coach does not. He knows his game. He sees it every day in practice. When he thinks he's ready he will play him more minutes. He's already been exposed to the coach. Fans are always about a month behind.

At this point Gallinari is your draft pick. You can't change it. He is a project that needs to learn the pro game. He may pick it up or he may be a bust. It's up to him at this point. But why worry about this right now. Give the guy some time. In the meantime enjoy the development of the other young guys. It ain't all gloom and doom right now.

"Mike D'Antoni was careful not to make any definite predictions about the impact the incoming veterans will have on Gallo's time, but he did make it clear that with the playoff push very much at the forefront, player development goes on the backburner.

“I think our focus now is to finish the year as well as we can and get as many wins as we can,” D’Antoni said before the game. “If Gallo’s part of that, that’s great. I hope he is. But we’re going to play the best rotation, best players and go from there. That’s what summer league and preseason and everything else is for, developing people. Right now we’re trying to win games.”

How can a lottery pick's desperately needed development, a player whose selection Walsh himself said they couldn't afford to screw up, go on the back burner for a short term goal when the organizations long term goal is so indelibly defined? It's incredibly short sighted and for what exactly? A one round and out playoff stint? It doesn't make sense.

A lot of first year players are developing nicely during the season. We were told that this guy was advanced from playing in a men's league. He needs to start showing it.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

Dirk needed development and look how it turned out. A lot of European players did and they turned out quite well. The true busts, like Lampe, sucked the moment they showed up. Gallo hasn't. He's shown he's already a good and willing defender, he has a VERY sweet stroke from all areas, and he's not afraid to drive and mix it up, and he has a good handle. He is also a very confident and affable young man. These are all positive qualities.

Have some patience. If he's a bust then he's a bust. He's not a bust yet though so for the love of god simmer down and give the kid a chance.

a little while ago you posted how Gallo's first start was the least earned and asked about earning minutes. If all you are going to do is just complain at least be consistent.

Organization's goal was to always make the playoffs, so how is it short-sighted?

Lee getting minutes, Nate getting minutes, Chandler getting minutes. Seems about right to me.

This team has to focus on a playoff birth!!! The experience would be incredible for our young talent! We already know what Gallo's level of play is and that won't likely change much at this point. So for the sake of the whole team we need to focus on the playoffs and try to make it! Gallo has YEARS to get it together not just half a season!
