That was a stupid, lazy, and sloppy foul by Bynum

I think that sums it up... I don't think there was malicious intent, but it lazy and sloppy. Bynum should be held responsible by the league, for certain. I think he should buy Wallace and his family a steak dinner and a new suit or something too

A fine and maybe a suspension for a game or two should be fine. It was a bad foul. He didn't mean to hurt Gerald, but it was still dumb.

Bynum isn't a bad person or dirty player, but he should learn from this quickly.

I agree that this doesn't look outlandishly dirty -- watch 3 random games and you'll see at least 1 or 2 fouls as bad -- but I don't think you divorce the act from its consequences when meting out punishment. I think he should sit as long as Wallace is out -- and w/o pay. If you commit a flagrant foul, you're taking a risk of hurting someone. If you do, you suffer serious consequences. If no one's hurt, well, you get punished, but it's not as severe. While the Oakley/Mason-style vigilante justice has its appeal, if I were running the league, I'd want to be the one cleaning this up and wouldn't want to leave it to the players.

Almost every game in college or pros a big man swings his elbows which could easily cause concussion broken noses etc.. this is pro sports--ever heard of Darryl Stingley or Jack Tatum? This is a cat fight compared to some plays in sports. It was a hard awkward foul. Is the foul worse than Raja Bell intentionally ripping Kobe's head off? No You run into a 285 pound player or he runs into you--you could get hurt. He was mandated early in the season to play tougher by Phil--Phil is old school. If he gets a game or even 2--he's going to have to live with it--more than 2 is ridiculous even if Wallace is out 2 months.

That was an unnecessary hit by jack tatum also. Now you see the NFL trying to eliminate those types of plays.. It is dirty. That game was a preseason game, and a pass stingley could not have caught. Tatum was pretty much blackballed from the league briggs, while stingley spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.. so what is your point here?

I didn't see anything wrong with the foul. It was an unfortunate hard foul but this is basketball. It would be business as usual if XMan, Oak or Mase delivered that shot.

Question: Gallo's drive to the basket against the Rockets. He led with his knees up. Would you consider that a dirty play? I wouldn't. I play the same way. If I get called for an offensive then it is fine, I have 5 fouls to use. I guarantee the next time I drive no one is going to try to take a charge from me.

The Bynum foul is part of basketball. The no layup rule.

Thats an extreme intpretation of the no layup rule that FAR way from the basket and with his arms barely raised, i'd give him a pass if he challenged for Wallace and fouled him hard but digging an elbow in to his ribs when he was most exposed?. Thats close to undercutting a dunking player IMO.

But after looking at the video it does seem like Bynum was caught in two minds and was it more clumsy than malicious..but if it was intentional from the start than its despicable.

Bynum would have made a great Knick with that play. But clearly, it looked like the hit that injured him and not the fall. It's hard to say what Bynum was trying to do. He wasn't even looking at dude when he hit him. And no doubt. He did' hit him intentially.

It doesn't look like it was malicious, but it was irresponsible and that's almost as bad.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace had a partially collapsed left lung and fractured a rib late in the team's double-overtime victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Wallace scored 15 points before a flagrant foul by Andrew Bynum knocked him to the floor with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter Tuesday night in the Bobcats' 117-110 win.

Wallace

A statement Wednesday from the Bobcats said Wallace was taken off the floor and underwent X-rays at Staples Center. Preliminary results were inconclusive, prompting Lakers team physicians to arrange a second examination.

Wallace had 30 to 40 percent of his left lung collapse as well as a non-displaced fracture of the fifth rib. The team said Wallace underwent a CT scan in Los Angeles, and had a chest tube inserted into the lung to help restore full function.

Wallace was to remain in the hospital over the next 48 hours for observation and did not accompany the team to Portland for Wednesday night's game.

Team spokesman B.J. Evans said there was no immediate indication on when Wallace would rejoin the team, or even when he would return to Charlotte. Veteran forward Juwan Howard replaced Wallace in the starting lineup game against Portland.

it wasnt the worst foul...when i first read about it, i assumed andrew took out his legs. really they ran into each other. but indeed, bynum needs to be a bit more careful - he's awful big and can do damage without even knowing it. that said, it was a pretty reckless drive by wallace. had bynum been a step quicker it might have been a charge and the same thing could have still happened. they both made reckless moves, but wallace is smaller and ended up smushed. i find it hard to really slam bynum for that. tho a couple game suspension might make it clear he needs to be more careful.

No suspension--just a fine upgraded to a flagrant 2. If the NBA doesnt suspend you--that must believe that it was an awkward foul that went bad with no malicious intent--I think that is what it was.

Bynum and his High Elbow can have a seat with his Torn Up Knee. Officially out 8-12 weeks. Balances of Justice are meted out.

i don't root for players to get injured, this is bad news for the Lakers. i want to see a healthy bynum in the playoffs, hopefully.

but the kid has a weird physique - maybe it's a function of him growing so big so fast or all the weight he dropped, but he has the look of someone not quite at home in his skin. he's just a little awkward looking, despite being quite athletic. with a big man who's had two pretty major, albeit freak, injuries in two years i wonder if the awkwardness might play a part. anyway, here's hoping he recovers quickly, i don't think he meant to hurt gerald wallace, though the timing is crazy on these two injuries.
