The Knicks training staff probably got him injured with a poorly supervised weight training program that first injured his back, and their doctors rushed him back before the injury was fully healed. I am willing to trust the instincts of the injured party over a medical staff with a less than sterling record of success.

Paragraph's #1 & #3 are fair assessments, but this one here basically acknowledges that the docs are idiots and Galo has basically zero feedback to make a healthy decision. Does that sound right? So does anyone else think it's a good idea to make an important decision like this, based solely on 'instincts' with this kids back?

The reason why I make a big deal out of it is to zero out all possibilities of a player that is in question. It's a very fair thing to do, especially since we have a whole history of key injury on this team. Since Ewing and co. left the organization. And I did raise questions about our conditioning staff being reliable with our players a few months back. As a matter of fact, a few others also brought the subjects up also.
I'll never trust this' team again.

A look at common back injuries in the NBA
When Backs Attack

Much like the ankles and knees of NBA players, the low back takes its fair share of pounding on a regular basis. It’s not so much the proverbial “straw that breaks” a basketball player’s back, but the routine grind and rigors of a season that takes its toll.
There are many factors associated with low back injuries in athletes. At times it a sharp move or direct hit can inflame the area, while at other times, a spasm gradually creeps up on the player and renders him in a significant amount of pain.

In analyzing these injuries, it is imperative to look beyond the obvious. The forces of running and jumping are transferred from the floor through the legs to the hips and back. Therefore, if there is a minor biomechanical problem at the hips, the low back takes more than its share of this force. In evaluating a player’s low back, typically a team’s medical staff will consider some of the following:

Back problems sidelined David Robinson for the Spurs' first seven playoff games.

Problems with the spine: There can be limitations in the range of motion from dysfunctions of the “facet” joints or disc herniation. They could limit the ability to bend forward and backward or sideways.

Uneven Pelvis on leg length differences: This is a common biomechanical problem associated with low back injuries. Muscle spasms in the area can affect the hips.

Foot Problems: Bad foot mechanics can cause an uneven weight distribution while running.

Muscle Imbalances: This could include weak abdominal muscles or tight hip flexor muscles or hamstrings.

In many cases, rest is an important element in the management of low back pain. It’s important to eliminate the stress and sometimes rest is mandatory. Therapeutic modalities such as electrical stimulation along with ice, heat, and massage all have a vital role in managing pain also; spinal mobilization can be beneficial when it is appropriate. Restoring proper lumbar flexibility is an important first step on the road to recovery. Eventually the hips would need to be stabilized and strengthened.

Medical clearance for the player’s return to play can be based on flexibility, strength, and discomfort. Our collective goal is to prevent that difficult rebound or hard drive to the basket from being like a “piece of straw” to injure their back.

His back is a concern, but I think there's just too much pessimism around here from some guys. The sky isn't falling every single time the words "Back Pain" come up. It's never good, but not always does it lead to some kind of permanent or chronic problems. A tall, long and still growing kid like Gallo is VERY susceptible to hurting his back when you consider he's still growing into his body. Compare him to a guy like Nate who has that low center of gravity and stopped growing fairly early. I think we just need to go with what the team is now doing and be patient with the kid. If they do this right, there's no reason to think he can't heal completely. There's always a chance that it could be worse than we hope, but I see no reason to get all crazy about it unless he has a major setback, which he hasn't so far.

A major set back like a serous disk problem? I wonder about some peoples thoughts on something this serious. We're not talking about wear and tear of an NBA's back. We're not talking about simple back pain. Hell, it's not even about the slip disk directly, because it's already too late. He's already playing again.

What it is about is 'why are they playing him, knowing he's in pain and he has a disk problem, even in the face of him admitting he's in pain'? When you feel pain direct with a well known problem at hand then that pain is telling you something!

Wouldn't it make more sense to rest him for the rest of the year? Wouldn't it make more sense to let him heal completely, condition himself back to full strength for next season, with little or no pain and be the best contributor he can be for years to come? Where are the precautions in all of this?

Career's have ended because of things like this. Take Don Mattingly and Ron Guidry. Two great superstars and their careers cut short because of back problems that never had a chance to heal. I don't think this is pessimism. It's legit concern. I like Galo and I'd hate to see him get hurt.
I'll never trust this' team again.
