David lee is getting better right before our eyes. Everything I brought up about why Lee might be traded he's started doing those things that would require him to stay and get paid: Jump shot and better defense. In 18 months maybe Lee is a bonafide starter on ANY team. If he is and we pay him good and then we attract 1 max FA and one very solid FA and you got a good trio - with guys like Chandler and Gallo and Duhon potentially there as well as a good supporting cast. Thoughts?
He's a keeper, pay the man, he's a star.
Let him test the market, if he walks, he walks, or we match an offer sheet.
It's just too eary to tell.
Not good enough for the money he will want, trade him now.

Nalod I wish they would ask Lebron lol. David has the respects of the superstars because of when he practiced against them out in Vegas two summers ago

he's young. he's putting up sick #'s. his coach loves him. he's a fan favorite. why would any gm NOT re-sign him? if you trae him, you better get PROVEN young players (that you'll eventually have to sign anyway) otherwise it would be stupid to get rid of him (even if you're getting #1 picks).

the two max players thing is a pipe dream. be happy to get 1. it will still take 2-3 years to build a contending team after that anyway unless chandler/rooster become studs.

I asked that question, who came up with that anyway. I thought most of the NY fans were happy and just expecting to clear enough money to sign 1..

This is the best approach.

Look there isn't going to be much room to sign Lebron as people think there will be unless we unload Curry. Lebron will command $17mil in salary at a minimum. You add Lee's probable market value of $9mil projected that's $26mil by $2010. You add Curry's $11mil that's $37mil. Add Effries near $7mil that's $44mil add Gallo and Chan's combined Team Option salary of $5.5mil, that's $49.5mil. The cap probably at best won't go past $60mil by 2010 because it's believed to drop this coming summer. This means we're looking at a potential cap of $49.5mil on the books, with us having to renounce all of our FA. If we renounce them they can only be resigned with available cap space. If we don't renounce them their cap hits are usually 105-120%(ball parking here) of the previous yr's salary. This guarantees Harrington, Q, James, Thomas are getting renounced. At best I see $10mil to play with, yet the players we want besides Lebron are Max Players(at least they think they are or the opinion is as such) Bosh, Joe Johnson, Amare, Wade, Dirk, Ray Allen. None of them will sign for less than $10mil. This also means we would have to either let Nate walk or trade for no salary coming back past 2010. We have no point guard if we renounce Duhon. Now our FA's can be resigned going over the cap but once again if this is done then their previous yrs salary is included in the 2010 cap at 105-120%. We'll have no MLE because this also has to be renounced in order to make as much cap room available. We'll only have the LLE and VME to sign other FA(including our own). If we don't win next yr Utah says thank U and we're winning too much this yr. Big mistake trashing Curry and Marbury this yr because we closed the book on trading them this season.

Something must be done with Effries and or Curry via trades, or we have to hope they both opt out.

Well I made a mistake by not saying "and another FA". Everything I stated after the bold part supported the argument of getting 2 FA. It should have read Lebron and another FA. I immediately added Lebron to our 2010 cap in the very next sentence. Hence Lebron plus Lee equal at least $26mil.

Why not to let market set his price?

That would be the smart way to go.

I'd ask Lebron what he thinks.

Haha

If we keep Lee, Thabeet would be the perfect center to place next to him. Thabeet would also be the perfect center to compliment Gallo as a forward.

Here's another point which could have been caught in the post.

I didn't even factor in the salary of our 2009 draft pick. The higher the pick the higher the cap hit. I didn't factor in the salary of any of our second round picks either if were to keep them. Right now our pick is slated for 10th. The 10th pick currently makes approximately $2mil, slightly above. So the cap hit for the 2009 pick in 2010 will be whatever the raise is, which will put the salary probably closer to $2.5mil. Now we're looking at a cap of $52mil plus second round pick salary of 2009 and 2010 if signed(Denver's and our very own).

We can always sign another big free agent in 2011.

I think thats going to end up being the best way to go. We should look to target a guy like Thabeet with our draft pick. And let the market set Lee value to resign him.

If Thabeet is the real deal he would make this current lineup a playoff contender. Then going into the 2010 offseason we would be a playoff contender with a frontcourt of Thabeet, Lee, Gallo, Chandler, Duhon. We would have probably traded Harrington, Nate & TT by this time for other pieces. We could look to target Lebron,Wade,Johnson or make a trade for a star SG using our cap space to make a deal in our liking. Say we landed Johnson. Then in 2011 when Curry & Jefferies contract expire we could then look to add another free agent. Thabeet, Lee, Chandler, Johnson, Duhon, 6th:Gallo with the ability to sign another max free agent probably at PG.

At this point, Walsh wants to keep his options open. So I anticipate that nothing will happen with Lee or Nate until this summer. The summer of 2009 may be a more important offseason than the summer of 2010.
