Yeah that's true, you gotta give to get. You're right. Surprising how few understand that...

Here's another Utah fan's perspective (pappa_goose) on this hypothetical trade from that thread:

"Considering the contracts we have and could have next season you are offering us little to no financial flexibility. The Jazz give up way to much for a guy that would come off the bench here. Now we can keep Koufos who will make significantly less for the next 3 yrs and we could get a draft pick that will replace the one we lose this season and could help us move up in 2010 if needed. If I were the GM I would reject your offer.

To answer your second question I think on potential alone Koufos could be better than Memo. He is starting in the NBA at a younger age and is more athletic and defensive minded than Memo and he has a tremendous work ethic."

Interesting. Even though I think he's off base when it comes to the financial flexibility they'd receive and Lee's value (I think Lee would be a starter on that team, at least until the end of the year - Boozer's out and Lee's better than Millsap) I'd probably feel the same way to be honest. I love young players and draft picks more than anything.

Interesting take on Koufos from a scout this guy pappa_goose supposedly spoke too recently:

this is 1 of those deals where u can understand why the other team would pass on it but as a fan of your own team there's no way u sign off on it while getting back anything less.

I think you left out part of his post. It must go something like this (just has to):

I read the Utah fan comments. I think they are right. Lee and Malik are not getting us Koufos, our draft pick, and Almond. I think a deal of Lee for Koufus and instead of giving us our 1st round draft pick back, we do a draft swap where Utah can take our pick if it is higher than their pick and we then get their pick might be something that is conceivable.

Even BETTER! That accomplishes two good things! It doesn't waste Lee's ability to be packaged with an undesirable and it brings back our pick - which if it remains in Utah - probably has oh a 90% chance of winning the lotto. Admit it, we've all thought about it.

David Lee is very valuable. Either I would take a package that I really want OR I would be willing to negotiate up to a 60mm$ contract extension. Hopefully I could get him for 50 but I don't think so. I cant take less than a VERY good trade--I would be just as willing to pay the man. David Lee is in the top 10 in the entire NBA in several big time stats and 26 years old--to me thats a premium player that you want to keep. And if they believe that he wont be affordable than either they go out and find a very fair trade OR get rid of Curry using the draft pick.

I really liked Koufos even before the draft and not only because he's greek. He can shoot the ball but more importantly he prefers the post and is actually an average-good post player at the moment with a lot of upside. The defense needs room for improvement but if you were to replace Koufos with Lee right now and give Koufos Lee's minutes, I guarantee you there numbers will be nearly similar. Guarantee.

This is about the only time where I'll agree with Briggs. I'd do that deal as well. Or maybe expand it and give them Jeffries for some contracts that expire by 2010 as well.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

i wonder if Utah values the '10 pick more or Koufos... personally i'd rather have the pick back as a Knicks fan... they can keep their kid if they love him so much... the pick can turn out to be a lottery talent easy... D Lee & Fishlips for Harpring & the '10 pick is a no brainer for me.

Everyone was saying it would have been dumb to sign Lee and that the Knicks have all the options on him. I wish someone would go back and see the threads not too many people said they should have signed him. Now Lee is holding most of the cards.

i don't see where anyone's opinions have changed on the matter... most people who agreed with Donnie keeping his options open then still probably think it was the right thing to do now.

I like Lee but his defense is just ass poor. Roy Hilbert look like the next coming of Wes Unseld in the first half. He moved around Lee too easy in the post. Punch the guy in the back if that would help.

David Lee is a darn good player. There are only 3 options with Lee--trade him to stick with Plan A to not sign anyone past 2009 in a deal where we get SIGNIFICANT value back

Plan B Offer him 6 years 54mm and hope he takes it and go up to 60 max if need be with the contract front loaded in just year 1

Plan C close eyes and pray we don't lose this player for nothing. To say he is valuable just for the pick back in 2010--sorry not enough--I want a fair deal that means very good young prospect and pick OR lottery pick in 2009.

It might be best for the Knicks to just sign Lee before other teams get a chance if a VERY fair deal is not out there. This is a darn good player.

David Lee 26 points 11 rebounds 12-15. Hibbert is 7-2 275 with a nice touch he's going to get easy shots against most players anyway. He's going to score points against a 6-9 player but I will take Lee's game tonight--the kid was awesome. He's underrated in terms of skill--no more shallow water.
