To me it doesn't make sense. And agent's job is to hit the phones and find opportunities for you. They are also trained to do this. Why would you want to take it on?

No Commissions!

...and in a case like Marbury who like him or not is somewhat of a forward thinker: I don't want anyone telling me what to do when I have a good idea of what to do!

You know, like his donation sprees for instance.

Your agent works for you, not the other way around.

Agents work for themselves. In certain circumstances if it fits their wallet they "work for you" because it means they will make out as well with their commission.

I'm on board with players who are able to negotiate their own contracts and futures and cut these pseudo-lawyers out of six digit pay days just for making a goddamn phone call.

There are also agents that screw up their clients lives. Remember Anthony Carter? Had 4M coming to him? His agent forgot to call the heat to say his client wanted to pick up his option and he became an unrestricted free agent and LOST FOUR MILLION DOLLARS in guaranteed pay?

What about agents that try to book their clients into stupid charities and nba cares commercials?

Marbury doesn't need their help he already dropped 5M on Katrina, FDNY, NYC Board of Ed, NYPD, NYEMS. Hundreds of thousands more for underpriveleged kids - free haircuts - free school packages (bookbag, notebooks, pens, etc), free merchandise from his Starbury brand to kids.

He did all this on his own - why should he have to fork over 100s of thousands of dollars to some bonehead agent when he could do it all himself?

What's an agent going to do for Marbury with the Knicks? Force him to accept that 15M buyout was good? Hey, might work for us, would work for the agent and his commissions, but would have been a wrong choice for Marbury.

I guess I could keep going on the reasons why a guy like Marbury does NOT need an agent....

I think players that the majority of players have good relationships with their agents and get plenty out of them. the horror stories and teh movie stereotypes are a falsehood.

I believe middle of the road players who had a good season and are entering FA do good by having an agent.
I feel that established veterans, guys who are down to just getting vet minimums, and proven young superstars ... simply don't need agents to facilitate the obvious.

Marbury fits in the category of someone who doesn't need an agent.

i feel u, but i think with the way the cba is structured there is no real need for an agent.marbs positon is a little bit different, how long ago did he get that contract? It was a max contract so there was no negotations that was the most he was going to get.but i do agree he needs one now.

I agree with you up until that last sentence. I think most established stars do not need agents. They have them anyway, because they understand the value of having a guy who can search for opportunities but clearly they do not need them. 3 years ago Marbs didn't need one. today, he clearly needs one.

Why? He can sit there and pout and get all his money and trick any team that would take him into the vet minimum next season.

Or he and the Knicks can finally both blink - he can then go get the pro-rated vet minimum from whoever team wants to risk him.

Agent does what in this scenario? I just don't see the need.

If that's the scenario he is looking for then no, he doesn't need an agent. It's speculation is that if he had an agent working the phones he would have had the buyout finalized and would be playing for someone right now. The agent would also be working in Marbs favor to paint him in a good light to other teams rather than having to defend himself.
