I for one don't believe the "good news".

The kid can't even put his pants on, has had numerous cortisone shots, hasn't played any meaningful ball since the injury (or, potentially was a re-aggravation of a pre-existing injury), is still in pain, will continue to be in pain, has a bulging disk that has not "healed".

How can this all point to "no surgery" and "just needs rest".

????

How much rest are we talking about? 5 years? It's been five months and he's had zero improvement!

If the kid is on the court in a month to six weeks and not in pain I'll believe this "good news".

If he's not, it's bull****.

No one can really be 100% accurate on diagnosing when someone's back is gonna heal. I do know that most specialists are going to say let it heal naturally unless there's some serious damage that only surgery can correct or if the situation is just not improving. But remember how long Q went before he got his surgery. It's not something you rush into, especially with a young guy like Gallo.

I don't know why they didn't just shut him down period. I know it's a bit deflating to have your prized pick not play in his 1st year, but Portland survived and so would we. He's young enough to let one season go. If he can heal and be pain free then let him play, but if he's still gonna have pain, then just give it up already and let him fully heal.

Q Rich said it repeatly last year how foolish it was of him to delay surgery. He claims to have no pain in his back now and the weight loss this summer helped him so he claims. I hoped that they talked to him about the Gallinari situation, I hope Gallinari consulted with him as well because when it comes to injuries a player would be foolish to take what their team says with any grain of salt.

"Danilo was examined by two specialists (Thursday). Both were in agreement that Danilo should receive another cortisone shot, which he received in the afternoon. He will now have an extended period of rest and over the next few weeks will receive additional opinions on his long-term management options."

In other words, see you next year, rookie. Or maybe, at best, after the All-Star break.

But basically he's shut down indefinitely, will consult with even more doctors, and although the word "surgery" wasn't mentioned, it certainly hasn't been ruled out.

http://njmg.typepad.com/knickknacks/2008/11/parting-gifts-for-steph-and-a-gallinari-update.html

I hope they don't go crazy with the cortisone shots because he will have another but more serious medical issue.

This is not new or good news. He has been told by many specialists that he does not need surgery but none have been able to tell him why his pain persist after so many months. Check out the Gallinari bad back thread. The question is why does he still feel pain even after rest.

That article said it's because he rushed in trying to come back.

Three months of non activity is rushing?

That's what doesn't make sense. He was cleared by both Knicks medical staff and his doctors after consulting with back specialist. Ken Berger did a write up about this in September. He felt pain after doing some drills and got those cortisone shots. The specialist said he didn't need surgery at that time. Berger talked to other specialist who said that he wouldn't require surgery but said it was alarming that he was still in so much pain after the rest for a man of his age. Those specialist said that surgery could be the best option if the pain doesn't stop and the disc is sticking out. D'Antoni was against playing him in the home opener and putting him in the rotation but Walsh pushed it. There is enough blame to go around but it begins and ends with Walsh.

Where do you come up with this crap?? No where else did I see this informaion and then you write it and expect us to accept it as fact?? What is wrong with you that every post of yours has to put down Walsh or Gallo for nothing? Lets see if you can reference any articles to back up your ridiculous claim.

"Donnie Walsh appears antsy to show the fans his first draft pick as Knicks president won't have no-show job this season like embattled Isiah Thomas and maybe Stephon MarburyStephon Marbury , a shocking DNP last night."
In fact, Walsh may consider Gallinari's development this season as important as Knick victories. D'Antoni decided to go ahead with it after asking Gallinari what he thought.

"If you want to win, I'll play," Gallinari told D'Antoni.

"Spoken like a true Italian," D'Antoni said.

"He said he wants to go," D'Antoni adding he wanted "to get his feet wet. He's got to get on that path."

"Is he 100 percent ready to go?" D'Anotni added. "Probably not. He's missed [three] months of valuable time."

http://www.nypost.com/seven/10302008/sports/knicks/gallinari_scoreless_in_debut_135952.htm

We know rookie Danilo Gallinari will get his first taste in this game. Don't expect him to get a ton of time, but if he's looking as comfortable as he has in the practice scrimmages, you never know. D'Antoni is concerned with exposing Gallinari to the home crowd and the bright lights of opening night. It'll be the kid's first taste of an NBA game since the summer league back in July. Kind of asking a lot.

OK, so if that's nine . . . who are we leaving out?

http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/basketball/knicks/blog/2008/10/minutes_men.html

Hahn had already indicated in his previous blog that Walsh was pushing to play Gallinair in the home opener to let Knick fans get a chance to see their rookie.

Don't forget the fact that on draft nite Walsh said he wanted Gallinari in the rotation with significant moments. Do I need to upload his comments on MSG on draft night too. D'Antoni wasn't too sure about that.

Knicks' Gallinari could start in D-League
BY ALAN HAHN October 18, 2008

"That is definitely open," D'Antoni said before facing the Celtics last night. "[It would] give him a taste of reality real quick. That's a possibility. He hasn't played, hasn't done anything. I could see doing it, rehabbing, making sure he's playing 40 minutes to get in good shape and then come back up. I could see that happen."

Gallinari, who has not played since suffering from a bulging disc during July's summer league, has been running on the side and doing shooting and full-court layup drills the past week. The No. 6 pick in the 2008 draft will miss the entire preseason schedule, and has yet to practice with the team.
The thought of playing in Reno was not Italian music to Gallinari's ears.

"I don't think it's the best solution," Gallinari told The Post. "I'm part of this group. I'm part of this team. I'm not part of any other team."

The Knicks have never used the D-League. The Big Horns, holding open tryouts yesterday and today at their Westchester County practice facility, begin training camp Nov. 10. Their exhibition schedule starts Nov. 21 and they play their season opener Nov. 29, hosting Bakersfield, Calif., at Reno Event Center.

Though D'Antoni said he hoped Gallinari could participate in his first full practice by next week, the Knicks rookie doubts it. Gallinari said he is looking more toward "two weeks" before he is able to scrimmage.

D'Antoni's argument is that once the regular season starts on Oct. 29, practices will be shorter and less plentiful, making it tougher for Gallinari to make up the ground lost. The D-League was invented for a raw talent like Gallinari, but Knicks president Donnie Walsh hopes the rookie can get in game shape and eventually make D'Antoni's rotation without going to Reno.

"I would rather him here," Walsh said. "The guys who aren't playing should be doing extra work. But if that's not happening, we'll look at that option."
During his individual drills with Knicks assistant/strength coach Greg Brittenham, Gallinari has shown he can shoot the ball beautifully. But his strength and durability will remain a question and Gallinari admitted he'll likely have to play with some level of back pain this season.

Gallinari is still confident he can salvage his rookie year.
"I feel comfortable with the way Mike plays and with the team," Gallinari said. "They say they are waiting for me and to take my time."

Before you accuse me of anything check on Donnie's history with Jonathan Bender and how he pushed Bird to play him despite Bird's intentions. It's well chronicle.

Hey Brainiac, did you read your own posts? Where did walsh push gallo to play when he was hurt? Saying he hopes Gallo is going to be part of the rotation when he was drafted? Your reasoning leaves alot to the imagination.

Gallo was the last person to give the consent, D'Antoni wasn't sure but one guy was sure about it before both of them.

I'm not sure if you really are this ignorant but NOWHERE is Walsh actually QUOTED as saying he wanted Gallo to play even if he's not ready. Walsh had no input or knowledge that Marbury wasn't going to play so apparantly D'Antoni is the one who decides to Who plays or not. ONLY D'Antoni was quoted. If you have an agenda to rip Walsh and Gallo I guess you don't let the facts get in the way. Keep up the good work.

I am sorry fanboy that I am pointing the facts out. Here I will make you feel better. Walsh has done an excellent job with Gallinari so far. It couldn't have gone better. I hope that helps.
