Just a quick note to those saying to get surgery, it IS NOT A POSSIBILITY. A bulging disk is NOT ruptured, there is nothing they can remove. To visualize it just imagine what would happen to a disk if you were holding an extra hundred pounds. It would just "bulge" out a bit.

That said, strengthening muscles needs to be done with care. Often it's constant muscle tension that actually can assist a bulge in bulging. (The muscle tension pulling across the disk section). Strengthening the muscles is important, but if you can imagine, allowing the tension in the muscles to relax is equally as important as the area needs to be in that "relaxed" state to really promote healing. At the same time the area needs movement.

Considering his age and how hard he has played ball for the last year, I am not really worried. He needed rest and got it. Now he needs to slowly come back. I haven't seen one person on any forum mention that back pain, bulging and ruptured disks, is caused by muscle tension (mind tension) but it is. (In addition to physical causes of course). I'm not a doctor but have researched this for years as well as experienced it.

Don't worry guys. If he takes care of his bodymind he will be ok. I've seen 10mm ruptured disks heal...

Man i'm glad you posted this so I don't sound like some Koolaid drinking nut about this. I think we're too ready to assume the worst when it comes to the Knicks. I can understand that with our history, but I think this case is a little different. IF they continue to bring him along, I believe he can get thru this just fine.

Thanks EMS for posting those points. I tell you what (Phar's gonna get a laugh here I'm sure) but yeah, I'm concerned. Thought he was feeling better?? That's what we all read. Now he says he's not, that the pain's still there and basically he's been status-quo for a while now. I looked into treatment and surgery on the 'net myself and looks like they can either treat this and it shouldn't be too much of a problem or if no progress is made with treatment, he might have to get surgery. If he has surgery it looks like laser surgery's the best alternative, from what I read. Small incision, use the laser to cut the part of the disc down where it's impacting the nerve then it's all about physical therapy to strengthen the back. One site I went to that performs these new laser techniques claims that you can actually start a physical therapy program in a matter of hours after the surgery. That surprised me a little but I guess that's good news. Then another site I glanced through said this type of surgery, like any surgery I suppose, isn't 100% and that every person's body reacts differently. So who knows now. WTF man, I feel horrible for this kid - they booed the **** outta this poor kid on draft night, then he goes and gets hurt. Real tough start so far, but you know he's gotta be itching to get out there and help the team. I just hope the Knick medical staff is doing right by this kid man, which hopefully they are, after all, it looks like they've elected not to ship him out to Nevada to start his career in the D-league in order to keep a close eye on him. Again, this injury news is frustrating as hell, but there's no doubt, whether you wanted this kid in the draft or not (and remember I was a Bayless guy), that he's got good enough skills to help this team. No doubt in my mind about that. If we had his help on offense some of these pre-season losses (especially in the one where we shot it poorly from downtown - Toronto on the road, last night against Boston) may have turned out a little differently...

exactly! tehy shouldnt rush him... he doesnt have to have surgery.. but SIT YOUR ASS DOWN until you are completely healed. hes saying its not getting better... so why is he starting to play??? makes no sense

I've heard about laser surgery for backs but not bulging disks. I can imagine it being possible to remove a small part of the bulge but a few points here:

1. If you remove the outer part of the disk that is the "harder" part. (The disk sort of has different densities, not really a shell per say). If you do that I imagine (don't know) that you are weakening the disk (if it doesn't re-harden where you cut it away.) With his style of play being very physical I would avoid this option, it's too big a chance.
2. Big point- Touching a nerve DOESN'T always cause pain. I saw pictures of many nerves that were "impinged" severely with NO pain at all. The correlation is not 100%. Yeah, I know it sounds wierd but it's true.

But, put the picture together with what you and I mentioned. If he can relax his muscles (yet strengthen them) the muscles will not pull the bulge any more into the nerve. The relaxation will help the bulge to go back to normal (as well as movement - being immobile is bad with backs actually). Hence, no pain.

It is really different with each person, but his age and mentality is on his side (He really seems like a nice guy, doesn't seem like he is holding in lots of rage and what not which would slow down healing and to an extent possible cause the problem he is seeking treatment from). I just wish that he was speaking to someone regarding his mind as that is a huge component but all you ever hear is: surgery, stretching, muscle strengthening, etc.

The kid is going to be special, let's hope he gets better quick to show it. Playing through back pain is sometimes not possible.

EMS

ps- If anyone is interested Dr. Sarno on healing back pain. He talks about all the things I mentioned for the most part (and more of course). He was guided to helping others in non physically invasive ways cause he saw that it was much more than a purely physical thing. http://www.amazon.com/Healing-Back-Pain-Mind-Body-Connection/dp/0446392308/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224741623&sr=1-1

make a list of players in the league with known back problems. then make a list of how many games they play. and how effective they are compared to before the back injury.

how many 19 year old professional athletes do you know with back problems? how many 19 year olds in general do you know with back problems?

hope for the best but keep the expectations in check...

Make a list of people who think like all the other people when it comes to healing. (or in general for that matter)
Make a list of doctors who treat as they were taught to treat and don't go much outside the box.
Make a list of teams who treat athletes as commodities and not human beings.
Etc.

We can play the "logic game" by showing one perspective and if we are limited to thinking in a certain way, by all accounts, it will appear true.

We don't know. The mind usually doesn't predict life so clearly. He is who he is and not an injury statistic nor is this a game of statistics. It's about an individual. We are talking a bulging disk. To call it "back problems" generalizing and grouping it with all back problems. Call it what it is, a bulging disk. Most bulging disks do not get diagnosed unless the athlete has pain and goes to the doctor and gets an XRray, ideally an MRI or the like. So we really don't know what the back of most 19 year old professional athletes looks like. Most 19 year olds don't play professional ball for a year straight with no break. Most 19 year olds have not played professional ball for years. Most 19 year olds are not the go to guy on a team full of men, in a league full of men (This kids back has probably experienced much more in a year than most other 19 year old basketball players). Basically, Gallo is not most 19 year olds, that is clear, real clear. When you make general statements, in themselves without seeing (or mentioning) the whole picture your point appears much stronger than when other "facts" are thrown in. It's nice that you (me too) have hope, but we really don't know what is going to happen. But I am keeping my perspective as wide as possible and not making it into a statistic, just open. Gallo's will, imo, will play a role too.
