Well, he said 'used to be'. I don't go there or eat hot dogs, but I figure $2.30 with the recession special.

Naw...

It's $3.50 now.

There's also fake Gray's Papaya, Papaya Dog, which isn't as good, stealing their business. I was out late on Friday night and Gray's Papaya on 6th Ave and 8th street was empty while Papaya Dog, 5 blocks away on West 4th and 6th, was packed.

That's because they're better located nowadays. 8th Street used to be a jumping street at night...now it's practically dead after all of the clothing stores close. It's because there's no nightlife nearby other than Love.

Moral of story 'never' open a business next to a clothing store! Unless your, well........a clothing store.

Haha...well, they've been there for ages, and it is a central location in the day, when they do a lot of business. It's just that they are open 24 hours, and late night on that street is just not as busy as it used to be, even a few years ago.

Young people used to treat 8th Street from 6th Ave to Broadway like a strip in other cities...

Dudes with their modified cars blasting music, girls and boys hanging out, etc. The stores there all cater to young people, head shops, tattoo parlours, edgy clothing stores, etc.. They also had the old Movieland cinema which played the Rocky Horror Picture Show, which meant there were always hip young people there. NYU is right up the street, so they would naturally gravitate to that street because of the "cool" factor.

Union Square has probably taken a lot of this population away too. That place used to be REALLY dead back in the day when they had possibly the most low-budget department store ever, Mays, and a bunch of banks surrounding the park, which was run down and neglected. Now Union Square is like a giant mall...it's THE hangout for high schoolers in the city, I think, and the oodles of college age and recent grads who seem to like it too...

Hence why I RARELY if ever go to the movie theater around there, which I'm guessing is the most sold out and overcrowded place to go to the movies in the city.

Clothing stores, if linked to "hipness" can very well help an area.

The Meat Packing District (Upper Far West Village) is filled with boutiques now, but also has nightlife. Soho, on the other hand, has some nightlife scene, but it's still more for day shopping.

New York is turning more and more into a shopping mall nowadays. Too much big brother going around also. But it's one of those eras that you can't stop I guess. New York got older and older and undeveloped and it is in those places, areas that people and events created some of the most influential pop culture the world had ever seen. Oh' and don't forget about Andy's second 'The Factory' in Union. Did you know that he paid only $100.00 'A YEAR' for rent at his first place, which used to be over on 47th St.? Amazing.

That's what's sad about development. It drives the originals out and brings in a whole new order of people (usually not from the areas) and the story gets lost about what the neighborhoods used to mean. I miss the old Rocky Horror picture show routine! I finally tried that Whole Foods at Columbus Circle and it's kind of cool looking and I like the way they check you out of line and all, but there's something missing. The original aura's of the place. There's no sense of place in certain areas anymore.

4949, I couldn't agree with you more. You summarized the problem of development, or "gentrification," very well.

the knicks have burned me so many times the last few years...but i am still nonetheless pretty optimistic. i think they need a real leader or star tho and i don't see him on this roster.

I've got plenty of room on the preseason "Knick Bandwagon". I agree with the sentiment expressed earlier that this team has been so devoid of direction the last 3 years that I don't think we could fairly judge what the players on this team can and can't do.

Any knick fan should be happy about the development of our young draft picks. Lee, Nate & Chan are showing some real promise. I don't feel anyone can say bust or success in terms of Gallo. i mean really what is that based on? We know he has talent, but until he hits the court for us and plays there's no evidence to go on. I do see how he could be a great fit for this team based on his skills. He should be perfect for MDA's system.

I LOVE MDA's system for this team. I felt this is what Isiah originally promised to do, before he changed up and gave up on the idea. MDA isn't afraid to look bad at the start in order to establish his system and down the line have the team playing the way he wants. Isiah coming off of the Anucha trial and losing seasons, was too scared to stick with his plan and that led him to make bad decisions. Now with MDA I think we're at the beginning of establishing a new identity and building from there. You have to be happy about that.

I'm not too optimistic about the record for this year and waiting impatiently to move on from the Isiah/Marbs era but I am finally excited about us moving forward with a rebuild(even though it will be a slow and painful process). A rebuild that is happening what 9 years too late? When did Pat get traded again? Only organization in history that didn't think it had to rebuild after losing it's franchise player. Stupid organization but at the moment it feels that the momentum is starting in the right direction
I just hope that people will like me

Look there hasnt been much to be optimistic about over the last few yrs except an occasional wild game and a few scoring records(jamals 52 etc...)Like I said before all I want is to look forward to watching the game and knowing they are developing players and are always in the game to win it.As long as the leave it out on the floor every nite, and our fans know if they do or not, hustle, rebound, block shots, play defense etc.... this is all I ask. Like I predicted before on another post another 15- 19 wins more would suit me fine and say they are going in the right direction and exciting me and the rest of the fans.On another note, the fantasy draft is this sunday and Im ready to kick some serious butt this year!!!
