Isiah's first year we made it to the playoffs. There was A LOT of hot topics back then- we made several blockbuster trades and were in "the hunt" for a good portion of the year. There were far fewer posters back then and the posters used to have more nuanced arguments then as well
I remember those times. Those were the days.
That being said. I remember posting with some of these guys back during the Latrell/Allan days. The conversations definitely were hopping and like you say, more nuanced. But guys back then were just as pessimistic as they are today. It was just pessimism with a different flavor
They were down on Sweetney.

Man, I loved Sweetney, I was a huge proponent of the Knicks drafting him. I still don't know how he didn't succeed here after watching him in college..

Thank you, I was the same way. I saw that guy literally dominate the best league in the country. He was a beast that never stopped. He kept his weight under control and was a motivated player. Then he gets to the pros, and he got that money.............

Sweetney dominated the Big East during one of the weakest stretches in the history of the conference. On top of that, as a senior, I watched him get outplayed in the NIT by St. Johns' nobody front line to lose in the NIT. Sweetney was way too short for his game in the NBA. It wasn't weight or anything like that. He is a center, and he is 6'6" inches tall. Simply too short for his game at the NBA level.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

It would be very exciting but I don't think it will happen with this Coach and President. I think succesful teams have to work so hard and have so much character that as a fan you can't help but be pationate about them.

We get it Ooh Aah, everyone was right and we were wrong. We've gone through that. That being said, I didn't see it the way everyone else did. I watched the guy play live. I watched the guy in summer pick-up games with pros in some intense matchups. I watched the guy play, and he could play. In the post nobody could stop him. Bigger guys, smaller guys etc. Was he good enough to be a star in the NBA? Probably not. But he was talented enough to compete in the NBA.
And for the Record, Calhoun is on record as saying that he thought Sweeteny would be a very good pro. Sometimes you are wrong, sometimes you are right. That's life.

Did sweets eat himself out of the league? Is he playing anywhere?
Yes. The Chicago papers used to blast that kid for his weight problem. He actually gained more weight after he left the Knicks. He has a serious eatting issue. The Bulls tried to work with him but he has emotional problems. It is sad.
Sam Smith, Chicago Tribune 12/6/06 They have been playing Sweetney a little more of late. Look, he can score some in the post and they don't have anyone who does, so it seems like they're giving in and realizing no one else will and why not give him a chance? You can see they're throwing the ball into him more now. But the Bulls have never quite figured out Sweetney. He seems to care and is a very polite, decent man. It appears he has some sort of eating disorder. I know he often tries to lose weight and even when he wasn't playing early in the season, his shirt was soaked through before games from running. But he doesn't seem to lose weight. And the Bulls have leaned on him constantly. My guess, and it's not particularly educated one, is that he eventually gets some help to save his career because he does have enough skills to be a rotation player somewhere.

It will be the same. We could win 82 games and still be biotching at someone
nah bro... i was a pretty huge kool-aid sippin' optimist back when i started posting on sports message boards, & that was when Layden was still our friggin' GM... after all the years of this pathetic circus look wtf happened... the isles bug has caught us all in some way or another... i'll be jumpin' outta my skin if this team ever got back to being relevant again & competitive.

there were others bro... trust me... i got tons of flack for doubting Sweetney's greatness before he ever stepped a foot on the NBA floor.
Sweetney = slow, fat, short, and nonathletic. His upside was that he was a smart player and worked hard...it wasn't enough.
I actually threw something at the TV when we drafted him. This was before my 42" LCD flat screen of course.
oohah
i didn't have that extreme a reaction, i just thought it didn't make any sense whatsoever to draft another undersized PF when we already had a glut at the position already... we needed a guy who could score from the 3 spot, not another guy who would fight for minutes with McKnee, KT, Spoon, Harrington & Vin Baker... so of course we draft Sweetney to add another undersized PF to the roster... then we fire Layden midseason, hire Isiah, & he ends up making another brilliant move by trading for Fugazy Tiny Tim a few months after Layden traded for Keith Van Horn to fill the obvious need at the SF spot & the team started to play well w/his new acquisition Stephon Marbury & Keith Van Horn finally gelling as teammates.
i think it was at that point that i began to throw things at the television set.

All boards are great to be on, when the times are good. And even though you guys started it 7 years ago, this shiat started when Layden took on Larry Johnson's enormous contract and then signed Houston to the 100 mil. That's the curse. Isiah just perfected it further.
This won't happen to often but let me defend Layden. Ernie Grunfeld traded for Larry Johnson in 96. Yes the same and last year the Knicks were under the salary cap. Since then it was wine and dine at MSG. Money to burn.
Good catch. I stand corrected! I knew that Larry Johnson started with the Knicks in 1999 and Layden came aboard the same year. But I missed the signing by Ernie.
I'll never trust this' team again.
