I was thinking about you today, DJ. Is this the way you pimp yourself into the backrooms of MSG?

Cynicism and pessimism sure runs deep with a good amount of Knick fans.

Do I blame us? No.

In fact, it reminds me of something that came up ealier with some old friends discussing days when the Mets were the glamor team of NY and the Yanks were essentially the Knicks in terms of being a joke. Even when the Yankees started showing signs, I feared it would go bad based on the past. We were always the inferior team, and we found ways to rationalize such thinking.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have reservations but to just talk about trading him as soon as he shines or to say he just talks, to me, hits that same note.

Ewing having multiple coaches and Craw are not the same comparison. Su, you're comparing apples and oranges, man. Ewing was a SUPERSTAR center in an age where centers dominated. The team had some winning seasons and was considered a top player from day 1. Crawford was not intended to be that guy, and had to since no one else could. He had not only multiple coaches, but really bad ones, on top of constant controversy. By the time Ewing was in his prime he not only had Patino who he won with, but with the two bad coaches afterward and even being one of the "50 greatest players" they could barely make the playoffs. In comes Riley, plus a style that FIT THE TEAM, in a defensive hard knocks game plan, and they never looked back.

That's beyond different than Crawford's experience, where the dominant player has been Marbury, and figure of management Isiah.

Do I expect a miracle? No. I've been very critical of Jamal as a player, as well as supportive, but he is quite forthcoming here, and as someone who has managed folks, I find this honestly to be highly valuable.

Thanks for the thread. I like Craw, but if he's to be considered more than a good back-up, but a below average starter, he does need to do the things he wrote about. D'Antoni's system will help him and it will help his buddy, Nate. The question is how much.

Jamal Crawford is so stupid on court he makes Gerald Wilkins look like a basketball Einstein.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

i only brought it up b/c of this:
I was really close with Isiah and didn't know who would be coming to coach us and was pretty nervous about that. When I found out it was Coach D'Antoni, I didn't know what to do. I was so excited because that's the style of ball I like to play. This is the best chance I may ever have at proving I belong as an elite player.

so in his own mind, he thinks he is an elite player.

crawford was coached by skiles. he leaves to the knicks, and skiles has that team in the playoffs 3 years in a row.
marbury was coached by lenny. they made the playoffs. he comes to the knicks, the same coach didn't make it through the season.

skiles + lenny + larry were the last 3 coaches crawford had before isiah. he had good coaches. he just failed to change his game. he's said the same thing before. again, the guy seems like a good person. but the way he wrote this blog, it was almost passive aggressive. i know i have to do this BUT... i need to work on this BUT...

but forget about what he said. all i know is that with a coach like d'antoni, crawford will be allowed to shoot (something he likes to do) and he won't be asked to play defense, or at least won't be held accountable on that end of the court. so if there's a tailor made coach for crawford's game, it's d'antoni. now, will those inflated #'s mean crawford becomes a better player under d'antoni? i think we'll be able to tell this year.

this blog is something that should be written from a player who's entering his 3rd year in the league, not 9th. the point he has made about coaches tells me he views others as a reason for him not becoming elite, rather than himself.

Crawford played better under Isiah's first season coaching the Knicks than he did for any of those coaches.

I agree, it's dead on. If I hear "this system will be good for me" one more time I'm going to kick the cat.

Jamal Crawford only know how to talk, or in this case type. His game will never change. He is who he is. He's not a bad guy but he's not a key guy on a winning team.

100% agree. this is the same guy that said last year "This year we have to do it. This year there are no excuses ...." etc etc

I actually don't know how to read this situation. While I don't think he's been used the right way for much of his career, some degree of blame has to rest on the player too. I think he has meant well and tried, but let's be real. This team wasn't even coached for much of last year. Once Isiah gave up on the season it was basically Jamal left, Jamal right and no real play calling. Perhaps with him focusing on scoring in the flow of the offense, it might get him on track and more consistent.

Defensively I just don't think he has the lateral quickness and reaction time to be a good defender. His weak body doesn't help either. Still he should be better than he's shown. I think it's assumed that scorers should be good defenders, but it doesn't work like that. When your on offense you have the advantage of knowing what you want to do, while the defender doesn't and has to react and anticipate. This is where it gets tricky. Some guys just don't have the natural anticipation that you need. There's also technique which Jamal could do a better job. Forcing his man towards help as he put it, is very important.

in this day and age (not just jamal but alot of players) don't take pride in defense. they don't say "i have to shut down my man". they're all talking about getting help and how you can't stop a guy. the mentality has changed regardless of the rules. the individual pride to actually contain their own guy is all but gone.

I'm not asking him to be a lock down defender, I'm just asking for the guy to play defense period. He has more than enough lateral quickness and length to be a solid defender. You can tell by that one game out of every 20 that he actually does get motivated and plays tremendous d. The guy simply doesn't take pride in it.

It reminds me of marbury when back in the day some used to say he he didn't have the lateral quickness to play D. Then magically one season he develops that lateral quickness and becomes a solid defender. It can be done, the players just don't committ to it anymore like DJ said and coaches are afraid to ask out of fear of losing the players and being called an authoritarian. Isn't it amazing how much better the defense of Lebron and Wade became during the olympics. Not only did they play D, they played it for the entire game. If Jamal had been on that team, his lateral quickness would have gotten better as well. The committment has to come from the coach and the players. We have had coaches that preached defense we just don't have the players that think it's as important as offense

Craws only real problem is shot selection.....my nuts tingle every time he just randomly chucks a shot with the defense on him.....funny thing is he can make those shots, and will make them when he's on one of his runs.

D'antoni's offense creates shots....the ultimate weapon that Craw has is the ability to get anywhere he wants to go with his incredible handle. There will be 3 options on every play and I'm just seeing Craw taking advantage of it all day. Its easy to saw Craw is an idiot and I'm a douche for thinking things will change. The style fits, when have we been abe to say that?......it should be beautiful.

Guys who pride themselves on their ability to do ankle breaking dipsey doos around the three point line and making lunging passes to themselves off the backboard really shouldn't be looked at as lacking lateral quickness. He might not anticipate well, but that's largely a matter of scouting your opponents to know which way they drive, and forcing them towards their weakness.

When Q-Rich is your team's best defender it ain't about lateral quickness.
