Thanks for all the great input guys... I really, really appreciate it.

I'm at my parents house now, so I have been discussing it with them. I emailed my sister (who is still in Indonesia). I told my grandparents about it too, who didn't even want me to travel abroad. So, my family has been in the loop. Most of them don't want me to go abroad for nine months but recognize the opportunity.

Having slept on it, I'd say I'm leaning in the direction of doing it. I'll take some more time though. So many great insights you all posted... JesseDark's line of "don't block the blessings" in particular makes too much sense.

I thought my post was the most insightful and gave the best advice. But if you want to give JesseDark credit over me, than I would like to rescind my advice. Do the opposite of what I said

Thank you for recognizing true genius. LOL. Seriously, I was faced with a similar circumstance that is why I am down here in Jacksonville now. (You never know how much you miss of NY until you are really away from it.) If you allow me to continue on my high horse, two books that I read that influenced my decision were The Alchemist by Paulo Coelo and The Color of Water by James McBride. Both can be completed in one plane ride so you wont be away from UK too long.

Don't listen to JesseDark he's trying to get you killed!

The Alchemist is a great book by the way. I was going to recommend that book before Jesse did but I found out that I was on your ignore list so I chose not too.

my aunt / uncle just moved to quatar with their two children. he got a 2 year contract working on an airport there.

everyone is commenting as if living in qatar is equivalent to the UK or something similar. it's not.

you will spend most of your time in an american compound that is very nicely furnished. if you were a woman you would not be allowed to drive your car out of the compound. you also would also not be allowed to leave the compound without an escort.

on one hand you have great job experience with excellent (tax-free) pay.
and on the other ...it's quatar.

from what i've heard from my aunt this isn't about the sight-seeing adventure that living in London may be; it's a good career move if you enjoy being 100% immersed in your job. and like someone else said, 9 months isn't that long of a time. i don't think this is something i would do if given the opportunity but there are very good perks.

this is why i said too bad the offer wasn't in Dubai instead... i dunno anyone living in Qatar but i gotta believe it's not gonna be the most fun of places to live & work in the world... taking a female over there you'd also have to respect local customs & have her cover herself up at all times walking around in 100+ degree heat in a damn ninja outfit... that can't be a pleasant experience.

My understanding is that Doha, Qatar has a great PG playing for the Doha Camels, their top BB team. From what people are saying, he's got the athletic ability of Erving, creativity of Maravich, & unselfishness of Magic. (They call him Dr. Magic Pistol, I think.) It's said that he has more moves than there are grains of sand in the Sahara.

A lot of guys who post here would probably trust one of their own to scout him instead of the mysterious "scouts" who recommended Gallinari to Walsh. Why not contact Donnie, I bet he'llpay for your airline ticket and admission to the games.

We all know the economy is a steaming pile of dung right. I just graduated with a grad degree in finance, which really isn't helping me find work at the moment.

I met with someone a month ago who said she would try to get me a job at her company as a financial consultant, after I got back from Southeast Asia. I got back last night and this morning she wrote saying she could get me work in Doha, Qatar if I was interested and could commit nine months.

I like to travel and see new things a lot. I really could use a job to pay off my student loans. This would be a great, great, GREAT job. But I was planning on returning to Washington, DC and being near my close friends... I don't have a big family and I have come to rely on these people like family. There is a girl I want to see about and I have a good feeling about this one...

I'm just curious what my fellow UK'ers would do.

Take the job. While you are young you still havee the opportunity to reach and see the world. Finance in NYC and DC is troubled in any event. And the possibility of a girl is like the possibility of rain. There will be more.

i agree, take the job while u r still single and build your contacts. did some one say tax free ?
the 9 months stay should be enough time to evaluate a longer stay.

qatar has 1 of the fastest growing economies in the world......put that on your re$ume

Supreme, just some food for thought...

http://www.state.gov/g/tip/rls/tiprpt/2007/82807.htm
"According to the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report, men and women who are lured into Qatar by promises of high wages are often forced into underpaid labor. The report states that Qatari laws against forced labor are rarely enforced and that labor laws often result in the detention of victims in deportation centers pending the completion of legal proceedings. The report ranks Qatar at Tier-3, which groups countries that neither satisfy the minimum standards nor demonstrate a significant effort to come into compliance."

just be careful u don't get lured by promises of riches only to end up giving foot massages by the side of the road to tired & weary desert travellers.
