People differ, but I learn best by doing. I would try to think of a project - some kind of tool I need - that isn't too complicated, and write it in the new language.

If you have time to take courses, you have time to code. Just dive in and start writing crappy code until you get the idea, then you can start to build your skills. Any certification that might benefit you, comes later IMO. I've met too many people who were certified to do things but had no practical experience or common sense about their chosen field. With your programming background, this shouldn't be a problem, but still... Practical experience is more important than certifications.

I would also make it known to my company that I'm interested in making this transition and willing to take on small projects in Java, should they come along, and that I'd be happy to accept any training they might offer.

I'm facing a similar situation, trying to transition to C#. I've done a couple of small projects, but so far have not fully transitioned. The installed base of code always pulls me back. I've got a couple of utility projects coming up, so I plan to use C#.

C# and Java are fairly similar. Of course, with C# you have all the .NET stuff.

https:// It's not so hard.

200K...Holy crap...I've been wasting my time as a film editor all these years. I'm going back to school w/DJ & become a programmer (either that or I'll run an NBA franchise into the ground & then still collect a fat check cause the owner is a moron & likes me cause I smile all the time)

Use this site. They have great tutorials and are set up so you'll be able to learn for free, then if you want you can pay to take a certification exam afterward.

thanks.

i see that's javascript - that's different from actual java, right?

Yea JavaScript is just a scripting language based on some of the syntax rules used in Java. But full blown Java code that is interpreted into bytecode is different. You want either Java or C#.

I am 2 years out of college and I have been using C# and I love it. There are opportunities a plenty out there for both C# and Java. Start with a CBT or book in either language and get started. Personally I find C# much easier a language to program in but its a matter of personal preference.

Actually, subzero, I was a C++ "expert" before I got into Java, and you'll be surprised how much java simplifies C++. I hope I never have to go back.

No Panos I wasnt talking about C++ I am talking about C#.

DJ works? When does that actually occur? When I code (I'm not a programmer, I'm a complete hack scripter and I am getting out of it.), I know I can't post on forums simultaneously.

DJ, keeping with my strange trend of agreeing with fishmike recently, I would have to agree with him in that programming for finance and trading is hot and a way to get paid extremely well. I just now returned from a meeting with a financial client who is developing a trading application, she said they have their programmers working 80 hour weeks because they can't find enough programmers who know how to program for trading. They have to poach programmers from other companies.

And yes, that application was being developed in Java. I am seeing more Java apps these days, so I would agree that it is a good idea to learn Java whether you or your company pays for it.

12 years in one spot? My feeling that the best way to improve your pay-scale and work situation is to move (up) from place to place building on your titles and experience. Unless of course it backfires or you are in the perfect job.

oohah

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

Perl. Its the wave of the future. J/k

Everyone is asking us to re-write our program in Java.
But PERL is either the #1 or #2 most used language on the Web today.
It is platform independent and you can write super obfuscated **** that no other perl programmer could even understand. Thats how you spell Job Security.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

I can't stand Perl for the very reason you mentioned. I did some Perl back in college. I've since use Python in places where I would've used Perl in the past. Much nicer.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Can you get some Java experience at you current job? It is usually better to have job experience then saying you picked up a language at home. Also there are still a lot of jobs in 'C' (especially in embedded apps) - which is probably the shortest leap from assembler. For Java consider what you want to do with Java - as most Java jobs are looking for Java skills with particular packages SWING, JDBC, Jini - take a look at Dice.com or whatever and see what's in demand.

As far as Perl I like it and it is still widely used but if I was to learn a general purpose scripting language today I think Python is a better choice.

Check out

for information on language popularity.

One other thing having learned Java relatively recently I would definitely recommend becoming familiar with an IDE. If you're an emacs or vi user you'll find Eclipse or Netbeans once you learn them make coding in and even learning Java a lot easier. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I second the recommendation to get Eclipse. It is a great Java IDE.

With any luck, you could become a Chief Software Architect. There are apparently jobs available in Phoenix.

ps, what's assembly?

I wrote in that back in the 60's... On a mainframe, then a Macro Lanquage, then COBOL, then ... oh hell, I forget what else...

I am the web programmer for my department and do everything in perl and javascript. There may be something to that job security theory. The other skills I do could be replaced but they couldn't get a Perl programmer to come in and do what I do. This thread has motivated me to follow up on the CBT training for Java.
