Delonte Holland suspended: the reason

October 24, 2007

I have read the news yesterday on eurobasket.com. It just said that the team suspended Delonte Holland from Virtus Bologna - a Euroleague contestant - because of problems with the coach for today’s Euroleague game against Zalgiris Kaunas.

In 2005 after playing for Atlas (Serbia-Montenegro) Holland, who played college ball at DePaul, got an offer from the Boston Celtics to join their training camp but did not make the jump to the NBA.

I wrote a quick email to Fabrice Turmel from - an Italian insider for Virtus Bologna - to ask him what really is going on with Delonte. Here is what he had to say:

Basically what happened is that Holland had a terrible game, got frustrated and said things to the coach he shouldn’t have. The president Sabatini said he was not sure to get back in the team because there are rules that he has to understand and if he doesn’t he’ll be sold. Apparently, that is not the first it happens to him. So he’s definitely out of (tomorrow’s) today’s euroleague game and for the following fixtures, we’ll just have to wait and see what the coach Pillastrini and Sabatini decide.

Wafer is a pure scorer but he's a tad bit too small at the 2 guard position particularly at the defensive end (195). Roberson is intriguing. He can really shoot it from the pg position. With Roberson and Collins on the roster, I really see no need for Robinson to be on this roster.

Was Paul Miller the nice shooting big man from last year? Maybe he gets a better look for a roster spot this season.

I thought the name sounded familiar too.

Yeah he is. He played at Standford and overseas the last few years.

I'm almost certain Delonte Holland is the guy that led the Italian League in scoring last year (I.e. Gallinari's league).

I couldn't find video on Grunfeld, Johnson or Roberson.

I'm really pulling for Anthony Roberson to make the team. He could be this year's Russel Walker Jr.

That would make sense since they want to install the new system a bit for the young guys. I have to admit that i'm a bit excited to see if the Knicks players can adapt to the D'Antoni system. I was so disappointed at the way things went with the "Quick" offense, which really only worked without Zach and Curry it seemed. The other Knicks passed and moved much more freely and things clicked for them. This is why we have to find a way to change this roster and move one of the plodders/black holes from the team.

In the meanwhile, the 15-man roster was just released. Here's the breakdown.

Knicks property:
Nate Robinson - 4th year, MVP of last year's summer league
Renaldo Balkman - 3rd year, coming off a disappointing sophomore season
Mardy Collins - 3rd year, suddenly buried deep among veteran guards
Wilson Chandler - 2nd year, coming off scary knee sprain after solid finish to season
Danilo Gallinari - Rookie, first look at the sixth overall pick in his North American pro debut

Interesting addition:
Von Wafer, 6-4 G (Portland/Denver last season) - Former Florida State guard originally a second-round pick of the Lakers in 2005 and has bounced around the NBA (Clippers, Nuggets and Trail Blazers) and NBDL ever since.

Others:
Dan Grunfeld, 6-5 G (Stanford) - played in Spain this past season
Antonio Graves 6-2 G (Pittsburgh) - played in CBA this past season
Marcus Hall 6-2 G (Colorado) - undrafted rookie
Delonte Holland 6-7 F (DePaul) - Chandler's college teammate played in Italy
Brandon Hunter 6-7 F (Ohio) - also played in Italy
Antoine Johnson 6-1 G (Albany) - from Berman's alma mater (d'oh!) and played in Turkey
Paul Miller 6-10 F/C (Wichita State) played in Poland and previous Knicks camp invitee
Anthony Roberson 6-2 G (Florida) - played in Israel
Zhang Songtao 6-11 C (China) - dude is listed at 212 lbs.

Here's the schedule. All games will be played at the Cox Pavillion at UNLV and will be televised on MSG Network.

Monday, July 14 vs Cleveland, 4 p.m.
Wednesday, July 16 vs. San Antonio, 4 p.m.
Friday, July 18 vs. Phoenix, 4 p.m.
Saturday, July 19 vs. Charlotte, 4 p.m.
Sunday, July 20 vs. Minnesota, 4 p.m.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.
