Why? Because I think so lowly of Herb? There are plenty of people who feel the same way. Herb sucks ass as a coach. I don't know how he has survived this long.

Teams and players? Who? I've never seen a quote. The only guy I can think of is Larry Brown. Or are you talking about our players? The same ones that wanted Isiah back?

My assessment is based on his time here since 2001. I didn't see anyone improve under his watch. Usually an assistant works with a few players and has them improve a certain part of their game. I never heard of Herb doing anything. Let's also add his time as interim coach which was terrible. Maybe he isn't head coaching material, but I don't think he is worthy of being on the coaching staff for 7 years now. He's not that good.

Anyway, I don't care about the coaching staff. I'm just amazed Herb manages to survive all the time.

I only hope D'Antoni and his crew can do as well as Cap'n Zeke. But I hope he does not get all the credit for bringing the ship around after the disastrous tenure of Layden. Herb is a competent and loyal crewman. No way he should be made to walk the plank.

Is there a Donnie-Herb link from Herb's days in Indy?

I don't get Herb as the top assistant. I have never heard him credited with anything (i.e. guys sometimes credited Aguirre for help with their game etc.). He seems to be still in the role David Wingate had before Herb took it over. The only difference is that Ewing hasn't been here for along time.

Herb hasn't done anything on the Knicks but make friends. He sucked as a player. He was weak, sickly looking and washed up. Ewing and the gang kept him around. As a coach, he's been apart of some big time losing. He wasn't really given a shot but he was a part of the losing so maybe he needs to be replaced finally for a new voice.

Bottom line, Herb williams is like the unofficial mascot of the New York Knicks.

I know I wasn't invited to respond but I'm going to answer anyway.

I like Herb, I think he deserves to be on the staff and he's a good guy to have around. It's hard to say exactly what he does coaching wise but I think he's more of a conduit to the players. Nobody thinks that Herb is the type to have an agenda and he has such a calming influence which makes him the perfect person to deliver messages and keep the peace.

I'd like to see what kind of coaching skills he has but he has to get coachable players first. After working with guys like JVG, Lenny Wilkens and Larry Brown and being coached by Pat Riley and Jack Ramsey, a smart person like Herb would have picked up a few things.

Very good evaluation here. Herb has sat next to and played for some of the best BB minds over the last 20+ years. You would think he picked up something of value over the years.

I am sure Herb is a nice guy and that may be his role on the coaching staff. I do not see him as a guy who is going to motivate or communicate to players in an effective manner. I think he has alot of the flaws Ewing has that prevent him from being a head coach. The big difference I see between Herb and Ewing is that Ewing has been credited with helping some big time players be successful. I think he is more mascot than defensive guru with this group of coaches.

Herb cannot be mascot, it should be animal not herb...

I was gonna add, I hope we fire Suhr, Aguirre, Glymph, and Roger Hinds totally from the organization. I don't want anymore Isiah cronies on this team.
