i'll ask this question again since it went unanswered in the other thread... who IYO is the better prospect coming out of college: Durant or Beasely? just trying to gauge Beasely's upside.

Beasley was the better player IMO in their 1 year apiece...

thank you V for making me feel whole again.

it's hard to tell really. Beasley has no NBA experience yet and Durant? In some peoples eyes, he had a little bit of a disappointing season last year. But 19 a game for a rook isn't too bad either.

ah, 49 you my man too.

I never got a chance to see him play this yr but I think Briggs did. He's essentially a Dwight Howard/Bynum hybrid. I don't think he has their defensive acumen quite yet. What scares me is the guy only snags 6reb/gm and his blocks were so-so for his size. Heck Beasley out boarded him by double and he isn't near his size, that scares me. The thing is will you get burned by passing on his upside.

And if we draft a big, all the more reason to get rid of Randolph, Curry and James. We do not want those 3 lazy dim wits corrupting out lottery pick.

But by getting rid of those 3 lazy dim wits, it could jeapardize holding our future cap room steady, for those mega moves in two years. I see no reason to move them right now. It's too soon. Wait two years and then' move them. Let's see what D'Antoni can do with this bunch first in the meantime.

Oh no, I want Randolph and Curry gone for contracts 2 years and less. Jerome James I want bought out ASAP. Can't have that alcoholic loser taking up a valuable roster spot which we could give to a hard working youngster. You know, like when we got rid of Udoka because we had no room for him.

Now we could keep Randolph and Curry in your scenario and then use them as expiring contracts 2 years down the road, however, I want the roster space now to develop hard working youngsters like when Riley found Mason and Starks in the scrap heep. But we get rid of them FOR THE CAP SPACE so we don't have to rely on other teams trading their unwanted players. Cap space gives us better options for players to fill specific needs. Also I do not want to ever see Zach Randolph or Eddy Curry put on a Knicks jersey again. Those 2 losers are going to keep us in the 30-40 win level which is no good. I'd much rather go all young and finish in the lottery next season while we develop guys who are going to be here 3 years down the road.

My draft board went like this around January-February

1. Beasley
2. Gordon
3. Jordan
4. Thabeet
5. Mayo
6. Rose

After the tournament it went

1. Beasley
2. Mayo
3. Jordan
4. Gordon(Thabeet doesn't declare
5. Rose although Bayless is growing on me some

What the heck kind of draft board is that? Rose #5 after Gordon AND Mayo?

I want to know about Jordan. Forget Mayo, Beasley and Rose because they will all be gone and I doubt we draft Gordon.

And I would never take Beasley #1. What position does he play?

Major I saw Beasley and Mayo in person square off at the tournament. All Beasley needs to do is put on 10lbs and tighten up his man D and he's a complete stud 4. Whoever drafts him, I'm going to be so jealous, he's a freak of nature.

Just like you think Beasley is overrated I think Rose is just as much the same. The guy played on a stacked squad as a two playing point and got glory as the best floor general in college when most saw it was CDR who carried that team.

Beasley will play the 4 trust me.

The only 2 players in this draft is are true Franchise players are Beasley and Mayo. My draft board went who I thought are the best players in the country then went immediately to need then to BPA.

[Edited by - TrueBlue on 05-21-2008 01:05 AM]

Mayo is not a franchise player. Get outta here with that nonsense.

Anyway, we're not getting Mayo or Beasely so who cares. Lets focus on players who will be available at SIX. I want to know more about Jordan!!!!!!!!!!

And I don't think Beasley is overrated, he is what he is. I just think he's weak on the defensive end and I want my PF to have length and play some serious defense.

The few times I have seen him play, I forgot he was on the floor... I was calling him casper the ghost...... Again this draft for me was all about rose.. I am not that big a fan of beasley.. but I sure as hell don't want this kid at #6 he has no offensive skills whatsoever, and doesn't stand out when he is on the floor.. he should have went back to school..

You can develop the offensive skills if you're a big man who is athletic and willing to work VERY hard. When Bynum first came into the league he was very raw and Kobe wanted him gone. But Bynum worked his ass off with Kareem and is now looking like he can be a serious talent if he ever gets healthy. You can't teach height, and you can't teach athleticism, so Jordan does have an advantage there, the key is whether or not he is willing to go the extra mile to become great. Eddy Curry has proven he is not willing to put in the incredible amount of work to become great. And thats the thing with these youngsters, you really don't know whats inside of these kids until they become professionals. That is what separates the good ones from the great ones. That inner drive to be the best you can be. Da f!uck was Isiah thinking when he traded for Eddy Curry?!?!?!?!?!? It was clear as day he didn't have that drive. F U ISIAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well if he's got the personality of Eddy Curry then there is no way in hell I would draft him. However, sometimes you just don't know until the player matures. Thats what separates the good gm's from the bad ones. You need to be able to read people. Pat Riley is real good at that.

No, that's what separates the good players from the bad ones. The good ones are the ones that are ready to work and commit to their profession from the day they decide to enter the NBA. The bad ones like Eddy Curry just never seem to get it.

And Pat Riley is real good at quitting when the Heat suck, and taking over the head coaching role once they become legitimate contenders again.

My point is you need to separate the skills/potential with WORK ETHIC. Cause WORK ETHIC and INNER DRIVE to be GREAT is what separates the players in the NBA. Afterall they wouldn't be in the NBA if they didn't have some skills. Now Bynum might have had the skills coming out of high school, but there were 9 gm's ahead of where the Lakers picked who had questions about his inner drive/work ethic, otherwise he would have been the #1 pick ahead of Bogut.

Well yeah, but sometimes you just don't know because when these players get into the NBA and have to play against players who are just as skilled and big, some of them fold up shop are just happy to collect that pay check. There is a commitment to working hard, and then there is a commitment to SERIOUSLY WORKING HARD to be GREAT. And it takes 24/7/365 to achieve that level of greatness. There is a big difference in work ethic and nutrition. Curry might think he's working hard, but when you compare it to Tim Duncan or Kobe, the difference is light years.

DeAndre Jordan is a guy I'd prefer to stay away from... I suppose he has all the physical tools where he could be a very good player, but there is nothing about him that makes me think it definite. So, there's a decent chance he'll turn out like a Bynum (As mentioned before), but in my opinion a greater chance that he'll completely stink.

I'd prefer not to take that risk... someone in another thread mentioned Russell Westbrook as player who will be a good NBA player but also has the potential to be real good as well. I'd rather go after those guys because this team needs a lot of help both now and in the future. I'm not necessarily advocating Westbrook, but rather that type of a player. I'd feel more comfortable drafting Thabeet than Jordan and I would be a little disappointed if the Knicks went with Thabeet.

Yea, I think when you have a guy that has displayed a questionable work ethic, then you don't give him big money , not until he proves he wants to be the best he can be, and has shown he is willing to work at being the best he can be... isiah saw curry, wanted curry and once isiah gets into his head a player he wants, he is willing to sell the farm to get that player.... Curry is what he is, and there is no changing that.. I just don't want to revisit the same thing with jordan and end up with eric Dampier Jr.....

Well that is where due diligence comes into play. Isiah obviously didn't do a thorough background check on Curry. HUGE mistake. Like Dolan and Mills, who didn't do a thorough background check on Isiah before they handed that clueless perv the keys to the franchise.

Walsh and D'Antoni need to sit these potential draftees down and get into their heads to find out what makes them tick and to see if the mental toughness/inner drive and desire to be great is there. It's one thing for these draftees to say all the right things, but good gm's know how to dig deep and find the answers. This also applies to Rose and Beasley. Obviously they've got the skills/upside to be great players, but again, it all comes down to that inner drive to be great.

As for Jordan, who knows, maybe there were issues at college which caused him to disappear at times on the court. Maybe he wasn't sure what the coach wanted. Maybe the coach sucked. Maybe Jordan had an injury. Maybe his teammates sucked. Maybe he started off with a poor work ethic but stepped it up at the end of the season. Maybe he didn't work hard at all. Maybe he was a hard worker but a slow learner. Maybe he was trying to adapt to being 7 feet tall.

Now obviously there are a lot of reasons why players fall in the draft, but just because he disappeared on the court as a freshman in college, doesn't mean he doesn't have that inner desire to be great. Sometimes it just clicks and all comes together at a later date. This is what the good gm's need to figure out and most of the times you just don't know because it's difficult to really get inside another person's head. And that is why most of these guys need at least 3 years of college before entering the pro's. Not everyone, but most do.

I understand what you're saying but again, you just don't know about any of these guys until they turn pro. Physical tools and skill sets only take you so far because these guys are going to be up against players who are just as skilled and are much bigger. Westbrook looks like he has that great drive and work ethic at a young age, but because he plays the point, he also needs too have the mental ability to be able to process information fast to be a really good point guard. This is where good gm skills come into play and I feel Donnie Walsh has that ability to read people because he's been around awhile and come up against all different types of people.

I saw Jordan play once this season and it was against Beasley. This was when Jordan's stock was very high and people were saying he was going to be the next Dwight. I'll tell you this, he does have scary athleticism (like Dwight has), but he is still raw as hell.

BRIGGS said it best, you pretty much flip a coin with him. I don't know his personality at all so I don't know if he is a hard worker. If he is determined to get better, he should be a decent player in this league. However, I think its a big risk to take.

I see your point, but one thing you forgot.. Maybe deandre Jordan just sucks.... I understand the inner desire thing, and maybe he has it, that will be for walsh to decide, but I just have this feeling that this kid will fall in the draft and deservingly so...but I could be wrong.... I am just going from the 4 games or so, I have seen him play..

Well if he just sucks then he just sucks and there is no changing that, but from the scouts assessment of him, they do rate him as someone who has a huge upside. So this is when you need to sit him down and get into his head. That is my point. Scouts only rate his ability/potential by what they see on the court in high school and college, gm's have to see this and also interview the player and check his background to see if he has that drive to maximize his "upside." This is something we as fans aren't privy to. Cause lots of times you see a player in college and say wow he is a can't miss prospect, then when he gets to the pro's he disappoints or he's just good but not as good as you thought he would be. It's so hard to figure out and thats why there are always sooooo many busts in the top 10 if you go through every draft.

What you're getting is a defensive specialist - zero offense. He's not a bad rebounder. His six boards per game was in 20 minutes. That's not bad. But this guy had better be almost Bill Russell defensively for this pick to work.

Ok I just watched some tape on this guy and also checked out his game logs. He definitely needs to mature, hit the weight room and seriously up his conditioning. This is a guy who should stay in school at least another year, preferably 2 more. So coming into the pro's there is pretty much no way he will be able to contribute anything significant right away. If he does everything right with regards to working hard, studying tape, practice, and always striving for excellence, you're looking at least another 3 years before he becomes a guy you could count on.

Now I'm not opposed to that because I'd rather wait for greatness than draft some player who doesn't have much upside, the trick is finding that player who could be great down the road. Thats where patience comes into play. Or do we take a player who is a bit more polished now but might not have the potential/upside Jordan has?

Myself, with the way the Knicks are now, I would rather take a chance on greatness in the future because over the next 2-3 years we're going to suck anyway. But I'm not saying Jordan is the guy we should draft because I also would like to take a look at other big men like McGee, Arthur and Randolph.

Out of those three, Arthur is the only one I'd feel comfortable taking at six. Even then, I'm somewhat scared of him. He's going to be a PF but he plays like a SF. He needs to learn to bang and rebound.

I haven't seen Mcgee play, but I didn't hear anything about him and I watch a decent amount of college basketball. Nor did any of my college basketball bar buddies. I think he's an internet sensation, but I could be wrong... I haven't watched as much as years past because of grad school.

Randolph seems like Tyrus Thomas part II, only without the spectacular NCAA tournament, so I'll pass.
