i don't think anyone was talking him up to be a pure PG, just that he's got some nice ability & great athleticism... i was asking BRIGGS if he'd rather have this kid or JR Smith.

It's a good safe pick. I know Mayo will go 3 and Lopez very likely 4--which will end us up with this guy and the Knicks will go safe[not a bad thing]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcqe9UXkc8o&NR=1

Hes way better than Gordon and while there can be discussion siwth westbrook Randolph maybe Gallinari and Joe Alexander--I see this guy as the alla-round safe pick that the Knicks are looking for. Not quite a pure PG but either is Tony Parker

Are you F!ucking kidding me? I turned that video off after 45 seconds. Why? Because who the hell wants to see a highlight tape of a POINT GUARD dunking the ball over and over and over again?!?!?!?!?!? How is he supposed to make the TEAM better? I want to see a tape of him PASSING the ball!!! Dunking is boring unless you're DWIGHT HOWARD or LEBRON JAMES. You know, FINISHERS!! Players who RECEIVE the ball from their POINT GUARD. This site seriously needs a :banghead: emoticon because Knick fans like Briggs want to make me bash my head through a wall.

You are killing me Briggs. Go watch some tapes of Magic Johnson in college and if you don't know who he is, then watch Chris Paul.
Bayless is a good PG dude ... IMO he's like Chauncey Billups, he can pass the ball but if you want him to score he'll be good at it. he's a good defender as well.

the best part about him is that he didn't want to return to Arizona because they wanted him to be a SG while he wanted to be a PG ... so it's a positive sign that he wants to be more passive.

Thats not the point. Suppose I have no clue who Bayless is and never seen him play, how am I to know that Bayless can pass the ball when Briggs is showing me a highlight tape of him dunking the ball over and over and over again. I admit, I'm taking a personal shot AT Briggs, which usually I like to refrain from, but Briggs pushed me over the edge with his "Starbury" mentality.

Can we get some videos of Bayless PASSING the ball, PLEASE.
well there's a very small chance to find a video of a person passing ... most highlight videos are players dunking or doing some crazy shots.

Magic Johnson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxBM3dTPc_k

Steve Nash - Passing video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhkx5ovweQg&feature=related

Chris Paul 20 assists vs. Cavs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLScxLrpEUs

Thats what I'm talking about.

Magic Johnson is Magic Johnson

the Nash video was part of TNT's fundamental videos ... they one for blocking, rebounding, shooting, taking a charge, etc ... it's not fan mad

CP3's was his 20 assist game which is a huge game.

i'm saying that it's hard to find a video mix that's all about passing.

And I'm saying it's not. It all depends on the player and what he's known for.

But my entire point was that Briggs is telling us this is the guy we need at the point guard spot, then he proceeds to show us a video of him dunking the ball over and over and over and over again. Someone who is clueless about Bayless would click open this thread and think he is just another selfish look at me I can dunk scoring "point guard" like Agent A-Hole of the Wizards. Do we really need that? Uh no.

Hold up there champ you're spazing and you didnt read clearly--this is what I said above--->If I had to guess Jerryd would probably be considered a PG in the terms of a Tony Parker--not a true PG but can play the poistion and be very effective doing so

---->He's going to be a very good player. He's a safe pick that also plays into our needs. Even though fans have personal choices of other players and who they think may be the best talent etc.. I am one of them--the honesty from the NY Knicks point of view is we need a guard who can play the point---I think they made that clear.[I didnt say he was MY personal choice for 5 rather that he was the smart safe pick that I think the Knicks will make there] They will NOT take chances like others might--there isnt going to be a Joihn bender pick here--its going to be a player like Bayless and it's a good safe pick that Im not going to haev a problem with. After Rose Bayless is the next best choice at the PG position even if he plays the point like Tony Parker. DJ Augustin showed that he is too small Eric Gordon is not a PG OJ mayo is not going to be there at 5--so it's either Russell Westbrook or Jerryd Bayless Im ASSUMING and I would assume they would go with Bayless.

So in summary what I said was I thought he is a PG in the Tony Parker type mode--which is NOT a bad thing. If you watched the two tapes you came away with several things
A.Very athletic
B.Can shoot
C.Can handle
D.Can Pass
E.Plays Smart and fast

These are all qualities of how we will play and these are the skills you need to play in that style.
Listen I personally believe in building big men first--but this is an open system that plays outside in--I mean they played an entire year with 6-8 diaw at C.

Sorry but any fan of point guards would have been nauseated at that first video you posted. I watched the first 40 seconds and it was just Bayless dunking the ball. I had to shut it off.

And if Bayless is not a pure point, THEN DON'T DRAFT HIM! When Barbosa ran the point in the Phoenix offense, it just wasn't the same! Just because you're "athletic" doesn't mean sh!t in the NBA.

So if we can't get Rose, then either draft a pure 2 guard who can shoot or go with a skilled athletic big man that can run up and down the floor. Don't just draft a point guard with the pick because we desperately need one. No, he still has to fit in with the style D'Antoni wants to run.

Now I'm not opposed to taking Bayless, it's just that I was very disappointed in that video you posted. When someone tells me this is the point guard we should take, right off the bat I expect to see some serious passing in that video. Instead you give us Gilbert Arenas aka Agent Azzhole.

Well hopefully well get the first pick so we dont have to think about it. However if you go look at any Derrick Rose videos all you are going to primarily see are dunks:)

You know, if you had just posted a description of his game like you did above, instead of showing that first video, I probably would have gotten excited about drafting Bayless. Now you killed everything with that dunking video.

P.S. Please don't post any videos of Derrick Rose.

Like I said I think this kid can play a Tony Parker type PG. He's not going to have the 8-10 assists but that does not mean he cant be effective in that position. JR Smith is a pure 2G. I think that JR would probably fall directly into the category of the prototype player Dantoni is looking--although I hope we dont become a team that shoots 30 3s a game---this isnt going to be easy--there is no steve nash here.

I agree. He's the obvious choice if he's there at five. He's not a pure point guard, but he can pass, drive, shoot and defend. There are pass first pg's but they aren't good enough for this pick. As bluenorange pointed out, he wants to develop his ability to play the position. If we end up at five, we have to hope some team is dumb enough to pick Lopez or another big.

Well, I may be in the minority, but I want my point guard to dunk. Early and often. Every time he gets the ball.

Listen majorleads, we've all (myself included) got to relax about coming up with a complete scouting report on a player after looking at some 4 min. youtube clip or reading some little write-up on a guy somewhere. These clips give you a little something but will never give you the full scoop on a guy. Come on man, you know that. You wanna laugh, there's another Bayless clip of him just shooting FTs. Only FTs.... I was like WTF am I watching???????? Also, I forgot who it was a while back, but someone posted some highlight clip of JJ skinny that made him look like an all-star. Remember that. Was very funny. Bottom line, grain of salt with these video clips OK.....

However, bottom line is, and I've been saying it for 2-3 weeks now, Bayless has got to be our guy. He definitely has the skills to run an NBA team a-la Tony Parker, Baron Davis, Stephon Marbury, Chris Paul or any other VERY GOOD OFFENSIVE-MINDED LEAD GUARD out there. He can score and he's gonna look to score and from anywhere on the court - slashing, getting to the rim/getting to the FT line/makes his FTs, pulling up mid-range stopping on a dime for two, 3-ball... ANYWHERE!!! OK, nothing wrong with that. You gotta put the ball in the hoop and D'Antoni's gonna be looking for someone to do it on a consistent basis. I think it's safe to say right now that Bayless is gonna be able to with high regularity.

And there's no doubt in my mind that the rest of his game will evolve into something special. He'll play defense because he's got the skills and he did it at Arizona. And he'll learn to pass the ball and get the ball to the right people at the right times. Believe me - D'Antoni will make sure of it. Doesn't mean he can't pass the ball or doesn't want to just because there isn't a youtube clip of him doing it. I must've watched this kid play at least 10 times this year. Trust me, he's not selfish at all and he's willing to share the ball. Remember too, beside Chase Budinger, who's a pretty nice SG prospect, Arizona pretty much had a bad team this year so a lot was asked out of Bayless, especially in the scoring department.

blueNorange brings up Chauncey Billups and that's an interesting comparison because Chauncey didn't really find his nitch in the league right away and wasn't nearly the complete player he is now. Billups made himself into a well-rounded lead guard who now, along with scoring the ball himself, puts the ball in the right people's hands at the right times - RIP, 'Sheed, Tayshaun, you name it.... Look for the same thing eventually from Bayless....

And blueNorange, good find on that info. about Bayless not wanting to return to Arizona because he wanted to be a PG.... I didn't know he said that, but that's a good bit of insight into this kid's mindset and what he wants to achieve for himself eventually.

Bayless will be a very solid pick for the Knicks. If we wind up with the 5th pick & it looks like he won't be there or was taken already, you trade up to get him. It's a no-brainer. Only way it's even an issue is if we somehow get super lucky and wind up with the 1st or 2nd pick and now the choice is between Bayless along with Rose or Beasley. But with the latter two gone, I take Bayless starting at #3 on down in this draft with no hesitation at all.

How's this backcourt:

Jerryd Bayless
*Jamal Crawford
Nate Robinson
Mardy Collins

Extremely versatile - all four guys play both guard spots and are interchangeable, deluxe scoring, youth, quickness, can go small or big, plus-sized defensive specialist with Mardy Collins...

* if we ever found a taker for Crawford we could sure up this spot even further & get even younger with a JR Smith signing or possibly look into acquiring a 2nd rounder from someone (Seattle?) and go after another shooter with size like Shan Foster, Courtney Lee, Richard Roby or Josh Shipp or a supreme athlete like JR Giddens. How'd that be?

A lot of possibilities here but it starts with getting Jerryd Bayless on board.

Come on man, they knew Bayless wasn't gonna be back probably from day 1. They knew he had the talent to be a one-year-and-out type of guy. What were they supposed to do as a program, not plan ahead?

Check out the odds for us on Wikipedia. So apparently, we have an 8.8% chance of getting the #1? Thanks for those last minute wins isiah.

I don't give a sh!t who we draft because as of right now, there are no sure things. I've hardly seen Bayless play, but I have confidence in our scouting department and I know that Isiah Thomas is not making the pick. (Thank God) That is good enough for me. But again, my whole point was why the hell is Briggs saying this is our POINT GUARD then showing us a video of him dunking. Who f!ucking cares about that?!?!?!? That is Starbury sh!t.

i don't get why you're getting all twisted into a bunch over this one dude... if u've hardly seen Bayless play then i don't get why you're getting all upset about how BRIGGS is describing this kid... most highlight reels of kids these days will be of them dunking the ball or making a sick crossover & making the more emphatic dramatic plays that stand out... passing into the post or orchestrating an offense isn't as much of an appreciated art by the ESPN obsessed generation that looks at these things these days.

I think we'd all love a CP3 or Nash type PG, but it's hard to predict that kind of thing. Heck NASH wasn't even Nash until a few years ago when he got to PHX. I haven't seen a lot of Bayless but what i've seen and heard from him, makes me feel like he could be a good pick. NOT PERFECT, but good.

You have to start somewhere and with that level of talent it's not a bad place to start. Now that we have D'Antoni and we know what the focus of the team will be it would be a good fit IMO. I think there are a few guards in the draft who could do well under him. CP3 is much more of a scorer now than I thought he'd be. But with those PG skills it makes him super deadly, which is also what made Nash so great. It's that combination of being a scoring threat and a passing surgeon that makes the best PG's. Who's to say Bayless couldn't be a similar player under D'Antoni. He's seems to me to be VERY much like Tony Parker, who was a horrible playmaker but learned how to make better decisions. Bayless actually seems like he's ahead of Tony at the same age in terms of his PG skills.

I think Bayless will either be very solid or an all-star type player.

He is a combo guard - in fact I'd say Nate is a better point prospect right now just because he's more creative.

The thing I didn't like about Bayless (and I saw him play 4-5 full games) was that he appeared very one dimensional and only seemed in play when the ball was in his hands. He never once started out on a move with the apparent intension of setting up someone else. He appeared to have blinders.

I also didn't like the fact that he settled for outside shots quite a bit and his in-between game (15 - 8) feet in wasn't apparent.

He either went all the way to the hole with a dunk or lay-up or took one or two dribbles and shot from 18-20 feet out.

I felt Mayo was the better all around player both in terms of a varied offensive arsenal (much better passer and rebounder) and as a defender. Also felt Mayo handled the ball better. Mayo doesn't shock you with his athleticsm but the smoothness of his game stands out.

I think Briggs is right -- if we are at #5 Bayless is a decent consolitation prize but I would be super surprised if we took the LSU kid just based more on size and potential and the fact that if Steph stays we'd have 3 solid back=court players already.

i don't get why you're getting all twisted into a bunch over this one dude... if u've hardly seen Bayless play then i don't get why you're getting all upset about how BRIGGS is describing this kid... most highlight reels of kids these days will be of them dunking the ball or making a sick crossover & making the more emphatic dramatic plays that stand out... passing into the post or orchestrating an offense isn't as much of an appreciated art by the ESPN obsessed generation that looks at these things these days.

That is my point!!!!!!!!!! I'm sick of this ESPN obsessed generation sh!t. Like I said, I haven't seen much of him and when someone says, this is the POINT GUARD we should draft, I want to know what makes him a special point guard? Enough of this Starbury look at me score sh!t. I'm sick and tired of some of these Knicks fans who Zeke and Dolan have been catering to for the past 4 years who are only obsessed with selfish me first play. Those fans are the ones who killed the Knicks because they don't hold POINT GUARDS or anyone on our team accountable for playing their position the right way.

Also, my point was not to knock Bayless or say we shouldn't draft him, my point was about what our past regime catered too. And that was individual selfish basketball. Thats why I don't want to see videos of Bayless dunking cause that stuff is irrelevant Show him leading a fast break, show him making great passes, show him shooting the ball and hitting tough shots, show him diving on the floor for loose balls, show me defense and steals, and show me leadership. Thats what I want to see from my point guard. Dunking is fine, but not an entire video of it and preferably a video of Bayless passing the ball which leads to a dunk by one of his teammates.

Damn ESPN generation is killing the NBA!!!

There you go, now this is the stuff I want to read! Thank You LivingLegend for an honest assessment. If he's not a pure point, I do not want him. Combo guards are good for the SECOND TEAM, not first team. I would much rather draft Mayo if you tell me he's a pure 2 guard can shoot and play defense. But if we stay at 5 then my preference would be for the kid from LSU. I'm not wasting my top 5 pick on a "combo guard."
