I hear we are going to keep Isiah around for a while

Where did you hear that?

Stephen A smith said that just now on ESPN, that part of the deal may have been to keep Isiah around for the time being... As coach I presume..

Why would Isiah suggest hiring Walsh, when this will eventually initiate another power struggle down the road for Isiah similar to the tug-of-war battle he had with Brown? But this time Walsh as president has the power over coach Thomas.

And why would Walsh leave the awkward situation he worked in by Birds side only to step into another awkward situation by Isiahs side? This doesn't add up to me. But then again this is MSG....

Stephen A said I SAY UGH'S position appears like it will be addressed in the off-season. For Now he's staying as Head Coach.

I still think that too many people are making assumptions when it comes to this whole ordeal. Isiah might be kept around but he might not be the coach, gm, or president, maybe he'd be kept as a scout.. just so he earns his money. I don't necessarily think that Isiah is going to stay as coach or anything.

Maybe I'm just being facetious.

Sounds about right. Why the need to hire Walsh now and not at seasons end?

Maybe so that he can start the healing process, you know fire most of Isiah's assistant coaches, do some scouting, prepare for the draft

I really hate Dolan. He could have waited till the season was over to interview Colangelo,West and everyone else. But no lets bring in a GM who is 67 and hasnt done anything in awhile while Bird ran the team. Im sorry but this is an awful move IMO.
I want to leave something that's going to stand for a long timeI want to leave a legacy,I want to leave tradition.I want to leave an imprint,a blueprint in terms of how people play, and how they coach and how they respond when they put on the Knick uni.

It's interesting that Isiah doesn't have anything in his contract saying what position he has within the structure. I would have expected that he would, or would be able to walk away with his money.

To think tonight's great loss and great Yankee win was sullied by the news that Isiah still holds power in the organization and will return as coach. For shame.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

This might be a money deal---here is 15 mm to front with IT--i mean the guy is 67. He is an Isiah helper--he helps and scapegoats--he talks to the media and Isiah doesnt have to. But it will be Isiah making decisions---remember it didnt work with two egos i.e LB and IT---I would think that Walsh certainly has an ego and would want a certain direction--why would Dolan do this again after beiung burned for 25mm? Maybe the deal is help IT with IT still firmly in charge.

Tomorrow, after class, I will see the inevitable about Isiah and I will promptly hand in my fan pass. This has gone on long enough. Rooting for a team is one thing but every franchise respects its fans. Every franchise in sports does. Except the Knicks. I'm not taking anymore **** from these fools. Maybe I'm just one guy but you know what? After tomorrow they will have one less fan. Dolan, I hope you rot in Hell. Usually I don't issue personal threats to people in sports but this man has made my life as a Knick fan a living hell. After it is made official tomorrow, I am done.

Goodnight fellas.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Some overreacting going on about Isiah still in as coach right now. The hiring of Walsh is a good sign for the future, but obviously only as long as Isiah is eventualy fired. There has been no word on plans for next year yet, so no final judgements can be made on what this means. Right now my guess is that Isiah is just a lame duck coach until the end of the season when he will be let go (please god!).

Im a Dolphin fan as well (see the name) and go to school in Miami, and when Parcells was hired in a similar situation all the media said Cameron was staying as coach and everyone panicked. About a week later he, along with most of his coaching staff, the GM, and medical staff, were all gone. So let's not overreact to what the media is saying right now and see what happens. It's tough for Knicks fan's to have at this point but have some hope the right steps will finally be made! I have to believe Walsh wouldn't just come here to be Dolan's puppet and keep Isiah around.

My guess is that they keep Isaiah as coach until the off-season and make the change then.

Walsh Will Take Control of Knicks

By HOWARD BECK
Published: April 2, 2008
Donnie Walsh, who has been quietly negotiating with Madison Square Garden officials for at least two weeks, will be introduced Wednesday as the Knicks’ president of basketball operations.

The team has scheduled a 1 p.m. news conference at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks did not specify what Walsh’s title would be, but according to a person with knowledge of the deal, he will become their president of basketball operations and will receive what is believed to be a four-year deal.

It is not clear what Walsh’s arrival means for Isiah Thomas, the Knicks’ coach and president, who has been running the team since December 2003. As president of the Indiana Pacers, Walsh gave Thomas his first coaching job and is known to still be friendly with him. The Knicks play at Memphis on Wednesday night.

Walsh will report directly to James L. Dolan, the Garden chairman, rather than Steve Mills, the Garden president. (Thomas reported to Mills, who recommended him for the job in 2003.) The person who gave the details was not authorized to speak about the deal since it had not yet been announced.

In a major concession, Dolan also granted Walsh the authority to rewrite the Garden’s highly restrictive policies on speaking with the news media. Walsh who long styled himself as an accessible, media-friendly executive, insisted on retaining that freedom before accepting the job, the person said. The Garden has generally disallowed any employee — from team executives to coaches, players and staff members — from speaking to reporters without permission or, often, without a public-relations person present.

A number of people with ties to Walsh have said they can see him retaining Thomas in some capacity, however the person with knowledge of the deal said that Thomas’s fate had yet to be decided. Dolan has been fiercely loyal to Thomas and, having granted him a contract extension only a year ago, may want him to remain.

The 67-year-old Walsh is widely regarded as one of the top executives in the N.B.A., having guided the Pacers to six Eastern Conference finals appearances and four Central Division titles since 1986. The Pacers made their only trip to the N.B.A. finals in 2000, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers.

After more than two decades as the Pacers’ top basketball executive, Walsh announced on March 24 that he would leave the team at the end of the season and turn over operations to Larry Bird, the team president.

The Knicks are a natural fit for Walsh, a native of the Bronx who has long felt a personal connection to the team. An accomplished architect of elite teams, Walsh will have a major task ahead of him. The Knicks have been over the salary cap for more than a decade, and the roster is packed with overpaid, underachieving players.

They are on pace for 60 losses, which would be a team record, and will soon complete their seventh straight losing season. Thomas shoulders much, if not all, of the responsibility for their current ill state of affairs. He has acquired every player on the roster.

Knicks officials made the Walsh announcement at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, less than an hour after the Knicks lost to the Bucks, 119-115, in overtime. The word came after the Knicks had left the arena and long after Thomas had spoken to the news media.

In his postgame news conference, Thomas was, as usual, oddly optimistic. “I look back and I look at what we started with and where we’re going, and I think we have a very bright future,” he said.

With the accomplished Walsh about to take the reins, that oft-repeated sentiment may actually become reality.
