Congrats buddy. That's awesome.

Not only did I read this but I plan on buying your CD to check it out for myself.

Oh and non-apology not accepted. As SC said, we need you to use that angst in your music. I'll pretty much take credit for anything at this point.

Sincerely though, congrats on the recognition, I'm sure it's very well deserved.
Thanks Isles! I hope you like it, and I'm very glad I inspired a cute little emoticon from you.

From one music man to another best wishes. In my career I've writen arranged and conducted and produced over 35 hits. 2 platium albums 7 gold albums. Got the billboard new group of the year back in the day and I'm still doing it. My field was not jazz even thought I love Jazz.
I will purchase your album and I trust that everyone on this forum will support you.
When will you be performing in the New York or New Jersey area??

Papabear

Wow! Who knew? Give it up Papa, what was your group?

Congrats! Thats huge! I recently took a Jazz class in my school and now I have a better appreciation for Jazz music. 93Buick who inspired you to become a jazz musician and what type of Jazz Era you like the best? I am more of a cool jazz man (Dave Brubeck). Avante Garde sounds horrible to me.

Thanks Cooked Coke! (Go easy on that stuff BTW)
Hmm well I'm inspired by many musicians- I usually go for the individual more than the genre-
I liked Charlie Parker and Paul Desmond as a kid playing alto, but Dexter Gordon was the guy that inspired me first to switch to tenor and actually learn how to play. I loved a record of his called Our Man in Paris.
If you want to take some little steps into the Avant world try "Science Fiction" or "The Shape of Jazz to come" by Ornette Coleman. Or, go the Trane route and start with "My Favorite Things" and "Love Supreme"- after you get into those then move on to "Intersteller Space" which is Trane playing duo w drums (Rashied Ali).
Some music that didn't sound good to me changed a lot w time.
These days I listen to Coleman Hawkins a lot, who was the first great tenor player ever. I also like Indian Classical music - I listen a sitarist named Nikhil Banerjee and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan on Sarod.

VDesai- Yes- I've heard Zakir play live - I'm more into the traditional school with indian music but he is a badass for sure- I know he also had a group Shakti that was great-
But when I listen to the old masters they conjure up something more mysterious than his fusion-approach- Zakir is still a total master however even if I'm more into the older style.

Bitty- Congrats yourself- did I read that you got married on Christmas Eve?

Bobby- Thanks- I didn't know people read Downbeat- you must be a musician-

DJ- Close- I'm trying to get tickets for free as a "celeb" guest. Or- play the national anthem at the Garden. That would be the best. Then I'd pull of my tux shirt to reveal a #10 jersey and point at Clyde as they haul me off.

When you're a jazz musician you're happy when people even know your name. Go for it.
What we really like is when people come out to gigs. I'm not afraid of people copying my CDs.
That being said, this is the first CD that I own all the mechanical rights to- I paid for it to be made and licensed it to Sunnyside, the label. So I encourage you first to steal all the older music on Fresh Sound, that I don't own the rights to beyond the basic BMI song royalties. In fact, I put up a bunch of tunes on my website you can snake right now-
http://billmchenry.com/music.html

BTW- Illegally is spelled with just one a. Like Legal- not Leagal. That's for a League. Ask any Musician.

Thanks for your post, and keeping this from becoming a Zach Randolph is so cute thread. (Although he is holding flowers, and Roses are flowers, and that's the name of my CD, so it's kind of a tie-in.)
