I wrote this last night while I was drunk and bent and didn't want to post it. But I'm getting bent again and decided to share because I want to talk NCAA hoops with people.
Here's a description of ten guys that seem to get a lot of press:
Beasely: top five pre-season pick, most reputable mocks have him number one overall. He drops 30 and 20 semi-regularly as a F.
Rose: Pre-season number one overall, a consensus top-three pick.
Mayo: This guy is interesting. He gets a lot of press and has a lot of talent, but he rolls with a posse. Apparently that's cooled, but nbadraft.net dropped him from third to late-lotto. He's a Marbury/Arenas type of PG, but got moved to SG and seems big enough to pull it off. He's a prospect at SG despite everyone listing him as a PG.
Gordon: Actually, he is going to be an awful lot like the Gordon on the Bulls.
Greene: A sweet-shooting, tall SF. He'd fit iin quite well with the Knicks in that they could use his size and shot, but he doesn't seem to enjoy playing defense.
Jordan: Everyone is riding his jock because of his rare combination of size, ability and athleticism. Right now he's a mediocre player and is a complete project. Someone will take him with a top-seven pick though, and if that team is the Knicks put me on suicide watch.
Batum: After the glorious Maciej Lampe, I am skeptical of every European prospect. All the scouting reports seem favorable though. "Rudy Gay" is a common comparison, but he seems taller yet less athletic than Gay.
Budinger: He would have been a lotto pick last year if he went. He's a SF that just does everything and seems to have a great feel for the game. He'll go later than he should, and whoever lands him get a steal. I'm not trying to compare him to a young Grant Hill, but think of that game and you'll understand how Budinger could progress.
Hibbert: A big center who can play, but he is one of those new era Georgetown centers. They used to be great, but now... I wouldn't touch him in the lotto even though he is ranked higher than Thabeet. I just don't see much upside. Other people do and he'll probably be a end of the lotto pick, despite a lot of buzz around him last year at the NCAA tournament.
Thabeet: No one is really sure how he'll turn out. Last year, people expected huge things because he is massive, but raw. More people seem to think he's destined to be a bust now though. I'd draft him at the end of the lotto because he's either great or bad any given night. He's averaging 10 and 8, but he's went for 12 and 12 with nine blocks, and 22 and 14 the next night... but he also put up a 3 and 6, among others. He got a lot of buzz last year in the NCAA tournament but poeple have soured on him. Jordan is the flavor of the month and Hibbert has a lot of polish but no athleticism... so Thhabeet could be a great value pick in that 15-20 range.
