WHO WOULD YOU RATHER THE YANKEES/METS TARGET IN A TRADE? Johan Santana PROS: best pitcher in the game, still in his prime, consistently dominant throughout his career, a durable horse CONS: will cost plenty in terms of prospects, will require a record breaking 7 year deal to sign Erik Bedard PROS: still signed to reasonable dollars, same age as Johan but will cost a lot less to hold onto salary wise CONS: not the marquee name, coming off a career season that contrasted significantly from his normal stats, BAL likely to demand top prospects for him too (if ur the Yankees, u never want to help a division rival), not overwhelming stuff, no postseason experience Scott Kazmir PROS: dominant stuff, 5 yrs younger than both Johan & Bedard, ex-Met (chance for the Yankees to twist the knife a little in the Zambrano trade, or for the Mets to redeem themselves for trading him away to begin with), signed to a cheap contract (money saved can be used to sign FA's like Texeira or Sabathia next season), always pitches well vs. BOS (suggests big game pitching ability) CONS: Devil Rays always ask for the moon when it comes to any trades w/the Yankees, durability questions, no postseason experience
Johan Santana
Erik Bedard
Scott Kazmir

Not for nothing, giving the Twins that first package would get them 2 positional starters this year and 2 guys that probably could step right into the rotation. That'd really be a positive deal for them and the Yanks should probably hold out.

Remember Santana has a no trade clause so he can dictate where he wants to go. Torii Hunter has mentioned in a couple interviews that Santana had talked to him about going to the Yankees. So if Johan wants to be a Yankee, they've got to stand firm on what they give up.

I think the Sox are in it to drive the Yankees into giving up Hughes but they have no intention of giving up Ellsbury or Bucholz either.

let's be realistic, Betemit is nothing more than a platoon guy/part time player... he's never been a starter on any team he's played on... Melky's a solid OFer but he doesn't have any star potential... Kennedy is projected as a #3 type starter & so is Horne... you can't give up ur ace franchise pitcher for a collection of middle rotation & backup position players... no matter if Johan has a no trade or not, that doesn't mean the Twins are forced to trade him to the Yankees... they can hold onto him, try to compete, & then pursue trade options at the Allstar break if they so choose as well... the Dodgers have plenty of great young players the Twins might be interested in as well & they can afford to pay Johan what he's looking for... if the Yankees were the only team Johan wanted to play for, he could also wait til free agency & sign a contract w/them... why would he want his future team to weaken itself by trading away their top young pitching prospect if they didn't have to? i don't think Johan only has the Yankees in his sights here... he's looking to get paid & join a contender... if the Yankees want him on the team, they have to expect to give up top young talent to get him... the Red Sox gave up Hanley Ramirez & Anibal Sanchez to get Beckett AND took on Lowell's contract... no one thought Lowell would be a bonus in that deal.

If the Twins deal Johan to the Dodgers that would be great for everyone involved.

if that happens, i see the Yankees going after Dan Haren... they're not gonna go into the season w/only 1 reliable veteran arm in the rotation (pending what Andy decides to do)

let's consider for a moment what exactly would be entailed in order to acquire Johan from the Twins... they're asking for 2 of our top pitching prospects, our starting CFer & another mid-tier prospect, & then we'd have to pay Johan a 5 year $120 million dollar deal for him to sign off on the deal!!!

i think the Yankees are being smart in not giving in to those ridiculous demands... let the Muts have him, they're desperate enough to do a deal like that... we have a good core of young pitching that we don't need to give up for that much of a pricetag.

now i have to pose the question again... would we be better off going after Kazmir or Bedard? the fact that both those teams play in our division hurts our chances obviously, but you have to figure a comparable package of players that the Yankees offered the Twins for Johan may be good enough to land either of those guys, & both would be under contract past next season at reasonable dollars... or should we just stand pat & let our youth develop & grow w/this team?

Kazmir is always a Bosux killer, so i think i'd rather have him than Bedard... that's a hard call for me to make whether to target Kaz or just stand pat though... this rotation would look pretty vicious:

Kazmir - L
Wang - R
Pettitte - L
Joba - R
Kennedy - R

The only possible ML ready players the Mets would give up are Humber or Pelfrey. The others are unproven and with the exception of Gomez are more than a year away. 2 years ago Milledge could have gotten Oswalt, and look what they ended up getting. Fmart's value is sky high, who knows what his value will be when he makes it to the show. I don't see Kazmir going anywhere until his arby runs out.

so far at this point in the season looks like Kazmir was the best choice of the 3:

Santana 5W-3L / 3.36 ERA / 1.18 WHIP / 58 K / .248 BAA
Bedard 3W-3L / 4.70 ERA / 1.30 WHIP / 40 K / .229 BAA
Kazmir 4W-1L / 1.50 ERA / 0.97 WHIP / 32 K / .181 BAA
