a scout for another team wrote a scathing criticism of Smith in SI's b-ball preview. They said he was the worst kind of player because they feel he has very low b-ball IQ, and plays selfishly.

Sounds perfect for the Knicks.

I think misterearl's point is that the same dudes who go on about character issues, bad attitudes, obtaining losers, and starphucking, are the same dudes who will want to snap up Josh Smith lickety-split!

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

That sounds inconsistent to me.

yeah, except for the fact that Josh is actually good & addresses a huge need for this team... how is he a starphuch btw? he's making rookie level contract dollars & he's 21 years old... if conveying that point was misterearl's intention then he just did a horrible job of doing it.

Josh Smith is going for the big bucks once his contract is up, believe that! Not only that, we'd have to give up quite a bit to get him, and he has not shown himself to be a winner yet. That is why he is a starphuck.

Marbury was actually good too. He was more successful team-wise than Smith as a young player, and individually better too. In fact, Marbury was pretty good when he got here. Smith has not yet been part of any successful situations as a pro.

Having said that, I'd still take Smith. I like good character guys, but you can't control that all the time. Crawford and Robinson for Smith!

I think I would prefer Artest. Artest fits right in with what we need. He might be crazy, but as a player on the court he is not selfish, and Smith apparently is. We have enough of that. Artest is a wing defensive player, Smith is more of an interior defensive player.

Zach Randolph was a starphuck... Stephon Marbury was a starphuck... J Smith is not a starphuck... if he was already making a huge contract, i could see ur point, but he's not, & you have to expect to give up ur best young players for any 21 yo stud who's making rookie level dollars... that's not a starphuck at all.

Isn't his rookie contract up this year? He wants to sign for Al Jefferson-like money or more I am sure. Don't you think so?

In fact, with his rookie level contract, I think the deal would have to be a sign and trade. It would probably be instant starphuck.

he's got another year left where he can get a qualifying offer before he becomes unrestricted, so he can either choose to sign a contract now & allow ATL a chance to match, or he can wait a year & take a chance on getting paid more later on when there should be more teams w/cap space to offer him big money deals... yes, it's true, he's going to cost a good amount of money, but for a 21 yo kid w/his talents, he'd be worth the investment... ur rating the kid on the same level as max dollar players that have never been able to live up to the deals they signed when he's already putting up 17 pt / 8 reb / 4 blk type #'s as a 21 yo kid in his 4th season in the pros, #'s that have gone up every year... he's still improving & getting stronger & there's no reason to think he'd tail off drastically the way a guy like Marbury has ever since he got here.

Don't get me wrong, he's a good player and I would like his talent on the team, but I see flags as well. He wants to be "the man" and I don't think he can be the focal point of a really good team, do you?

And as we have seen, a player with that attitude who cannot deliver at that level can be destructive to a team. I'm not rating him on the same level as an older player like you are saying, but I am comparing their "career arcs" and Smith reminds me of Marbury in many ways.

I guess it all depends on how he arrives if he were to arrive.

the most i can imagine Josh Smith getting in free agency next year or the year after is something along the lines of a $10-$12 million dollars over a 5 yr period, & at that money he'd be well worth the investment... after that contract is up is when he's going to make that max type contract that guys like Rashard Lewis & Antawn Jamison were able to bamboozle out of their respective teams when they were in their mid-late 20's... no team is going to pay him max dollars until he shows he can be an Allstar calibre player over a consistent # of seasons, so the risk of him being a starphuck is much more minimal than taking on a guy like Steph who was already making those max dollars & was pretty much a given that you wouldn't be getting franchise calibre player value out of him when the deal was made... that's where i draw the distinction just so u see why i referenced the parallels in your argument.

anyway, i love Josh Smith just like u do, & to me the aspect of shotblocking & future superstar potential that he brings outweighs the negative press he's been getting...

to answer ur question, Josh reminds me a lot more of Ron Artest's career arc to be honest, w/o all the idiotic behavior & baggage off the court... i don't think Josh can be the man on his team just like i don't see Artest as being able to be the man on his, but they both would make excellent secondary players to complement any stud player u can get ur hands on, only Josh isn't mentally unstable.
