Hi BRIGGS.

We were down yesterday for a couple of hours and then we were down last weekend while the both of us were out of town. We think something is messed up with our firewall.

I guess we should set up a distribution list or something when we go down so that everyone does not think we have shut our doors and gone to a third world country.

Why does everyone take it so personal when we have a snafu?

Martin--this is the only website that I could not access on the net for over a week. I knew it was down but when it came back up I still couldnt enter. I cant enter the website via the url--I have to use a proxy[which took an idiot like me time to figure out]

usually that means something else on your end has changed. We haven't made any changes on our side.

Martin,

Is your firewall blocking any ip address ranges? Maybe BRIGGS ip address is in one of those ranges.

we don't block ip's at the firewall.

What do you guys think?

Should we open a tip jar and accept some donations and then put this site up on a hosted environment where it will go down less (hopefully never)?

Yeah. You should. This site has so many visitors, both regular posters and lurkers -- that it shouldn't require much from every individual to kick in a little and have it total out to a lot.
I'm more than willing to make a donation.

are we talking lap dances, $ or canadian $?

I think it's a good idea. I don't suppose the google ads are enough to cover it? Is there a co-location facility nearby? I've got a box in a colo for $100 a month. Of course, it is a rack-mount machine, which you probably don't have... You could also look at managed hosting.

I guess the first thing would be to find out how much it's going to cost & see if it's reasonable to expect that much in donations, then maybe setup a pay-pal account and ask for donations. Or sell UltimateKnicks T-shirts and caps or something like that.

Also, people who donate should get an icon and special powers on the board .

I've never co-lo'ed before... what are the down sides to it? do you have a server and firewall or just server? We do have a rack-mountable server right now.

The biggest downside is that you don't have immediate physical access to it. So if a hard drive fails or something, you've got to schlepp down to toe colo. If they have id cards you can probably get right in. Otherwise, they may give you a hassle. Also, every little thing costs extra, so if you wanted a firewall they'd charge you extra.
Backup might cost extra.

If there's one not too far from you it might be worth looking into. If they are hungry for customers it might not be too bad. I don't like the idea of co-locating in another state.

Otherwise, maybe the thing to do is replace your firewall (if that is what's been causing the problems) and bring in a second line - like a DSL line. Then you'd have some redundancy if there are problems with your primary connection.

you guys must've been suffering an ultimateknicks posting-jones. usually when you are blocked there is some kind of notification......including visiting unauthorized websites from your work.

martin and andrew.....as soon as the servers are up maybe the best way to remedy such replies from briggs or whoever is in doubt is to sticky a message in red with something of the following:

we apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced while trying to access this website during sever outage. thanks for your patience, we look forward in hearing from you soon.

Martin, you should look at ways to generate revenue from the site if its just meant to maintian the site, or if its to give you enough dough to buy a place on the South Fork.

If you want to create merchandise that can be sold on the site I can help you figure out ways to do that. The company I work for runs Sports Illustrated's merchandise development and sales. Making some sweet UK shirts, jerseys etc, shouldn't be too tough.

You should be able to sell advertising space on the site as well. One banner on each page isn't going to kill anyone. Maybe Bangbros would buy some space.

Not to divert the discussion from helping UK stay afloat, but I'd love to hear what you can do regarding merchandise for my band.

I don't see the point of overpaying and going the colo way for a rack mounted server. IMHO, a very good webhosting company with the same kinda setup as yours is a much better option. A hosting company for max $20/month with ton's of space and unlimited bandwidth and similar to your current server is the way to go. Use your home setup as a backup through DynDNS or something if the hosting company ever goes down. Generally their SLA's have like a 99% uptime so you are looking at a good solution.

Done! I bet you guys will make some money off the forum to make up for all those ISP bills from the last 6 years. I dunno if this is possible but setup an anonymous donations box; that way you don't have to offer the donating members any special privileges.

I'm sure we can get in touch with Jessica Alba's people & work out a deal there as well.

I think it was fixed in one of the FireFox releases. Check to see what version your browser is.
