Now what about the Free Throws? I still think we can pick up 4-5 games simply by hiring a FT coach and turning guys like Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury into more reliable FT shooters. Eddy gets to the line so much and gives away 6-8 points a night probably on his misses.

This is another hidden benefit of adding Zach. He get's to the line about as much as Curry but hits for about 82%. So yeah it would help a good deal for Curry and others to hit more FT's. The thing is that between Zach, Curry and Lee we should see about 18+ FTA's per. As a team we avg'd 29 a game, but only made about 21 of those. Both numbers should improve.

Now imagine what it would do for the team if at the same time they improved the free throw numbers, they also improved their defense

Isiah says that he intends to get the perimeter defenders to do a better job in defending the 3pt line and slowing down the amount of penetration we see. I can only assume that intends to play guys like Balk and Mardy more, since they are probably our best perimeter defenders. I think Q is a decent defender as long as he's healthy and hopefully lighter than he was last year, cuz he was carrying a lot of extra weight last year. Steph showed that he can defend as well, so hopefully we'll be a bit better. Not shut down level, but if they can just limit the easy looks, that should help a good deal.

Zach and Curry will need to at least try to move their feet and get their hands up, but i'm not expecting any miracles. They just aren't defensive players. I suspect that Isiah will try to get tricky with some different zone looks to hide our lack of inside quickness and shotblocking when Zach and Curry are in there.

Sure thats nice but FT improvement is easier and more realistic. We were a high turnover, bad defense, good offense team. This year we've got a shot to be a high turnover, bad defense, great offense team.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Why do we have to be a high turnover team? That's the part that kills me. People just have to play within themselves.

You aren't winning a title without defense. And since the goal I guess is to one day win a title we have to somehow turn this into a defensive team. So ultimately you need to have your frontcourt playing D or eventually you will have to trade them. Not sure why so many Knick fans are willing to dismiss the importance of defense.

Not sure where you get that i'm dismissing defense. I'm not deluding myself into thinking this outfit will ever be a championship calibre defensive squad... Trades must be made for that to happen. And they have to involve all our big money guys. So don't hold your breath.

I think the real keys to the season will be how well the Knicks improve on their 2 biggest weaknesses. At the team level, the biggest defense weakness is guarding the 3 point shot and the biggest offensive weakness is turning the ball over. Because they're so bad at those two things (at the bottom of the league in both) it's also the case that those two things have the most room for improvement. If NY could get to just rank even in the upper 20s in those two categories instead of hovering around 30th, you'll see big improvement. If they stay as bad as they have been in those two areas it's going to be tough to improve substantially.
