One more question can someone explain to me how he wasn't on the list in 2003 but then in 2004 when he was traded to the Knicks he jumped to #3 in Jersey sales?
It's simple. The guy has been the leading player on the NY Knicks, which happens to be a huge market. He has TONS of street cred in a city that LOVES basketball. If you're comparing fans here and in Phx, there's simply no comparison. It's a matter of scale. He doesn't have to be the best player in the world. He's in NY and the fans here want to rep NY, so they buy the jersey of the guy that is the best player on the team.
You can hate on him all you want, but Steph has a marketable name and he's been successful selling that name and his products. I went to the Steve and Barry's in Athens, GA and they told me that his stuff is selling like crazy. I bought a bunch of stuff for my kids who are Knicks fans and they are no different than any other young person. They don't get into all the stuff that you and many adult fans do. All they know is that they see him making exciting plays on the court and they see him selling cool clothes and shoes so they like him. Face it, no matter what you may think of him, the guy has fans and he's till popular enough to be a success at the cash register.
I never said he wasn't a popular player I said he isn't as popular as lead to believe, particularly outside his own market, the statistics bear this.
And don't look again Luva but Steve Nash who plays for the Phx Suns is ranked 6th/5th, so if it isn't the Phx/Arizona market then obviously he's adored outside of his own.
My point is that if Nash was in NY, he'd be #1. What keeps Steph so high is being in this market and being the teams top player, at least in terms of name recognition. I'm sure Nash is more popular in other cities, but so long as Steph has such a high profile in NY, it really doesn't matter. Who cares if people in Memphis don't want to buy his jersey.
By the way. There are NY'ers everywhere. At the Hawks game there were so many Knicks fans it wasn't even funny. We were as loud as the home team fans when the Knicks started winning, even tho there were more of them. It's just that there were clearly a lot of Knick fans there.
I suppose when Steph is playing well for the Knicks you sit there and boo. What exactly is your angle? If you truly are a Knicks fan, why do you so openly speak against Steph? I don't care what he's like off the court. When he's in uniform and on the court I want him to succeed EVERY TIME! I know you can't possibly root against him during games, so what gives? Do you want him the have 2 more great seasons, or is your hate for him so great that you would wish ill of him knowing we need him to win?
