To keep the one-time All-Star, the Sonics would have had to offer the 6-foot-10 forward a six-year, $124 million deal, which would have trumped the Magic's five-year, $97 million offer. If the teams complete a sign-and- trade deal, Orlando would be responsible for $124 million.

"I don't know if anybody knows how good Rashard really is because he's done a great job of adapting his whole career," said Ray Allen, the former Sonic traded to Boston on draft day. "He's played with me and he's played with Gary [Payton]. Two different personalities. I never thought Rashard played second fiddle, it's just that Gary and myself are very demonstrative when we play basketball.

From Seattle's side. I hope this helps with all those theories that it is not possible.

The signing makes sense for them. It doesn't look like they can sign Darko. Lewis' contract takes them officially over the cap and they can't resign him to an MLE contract.

Magic Acquire Rashard Lewis In A Sign And Trade
July 11, 2007 - 12:38 pm
Press Release -
The Orlando Magic have acquired forward Rashard Lewis from the Seattle SuperSonics in a sign-and-trade deal in exchange for a future conditional second round draft pick, General Manager Otis Smith announced today.

“Rashard (Lewis) is a young, athletic forward and a proven scorer in this league,” said Smith. “We feel his skills will be a tremendous addition to our team and we are very excited to have him join the Magic family.”

Lewis played in 60 games last season with Seattle, averaging a career-high 22.4 ppg., 6.6 rpg., 2.4 apg. and 1.13 spg. in 39.1 mpg.

if it's a s&t, we can assume it's for 6 years...and since no other players are involved, it looks like the magic have renounced darko's rights (as well as some other players).

word out of orlando is that there were other strong offers for shard which included a 6th year, so orlando somewhat panicked.

this is retarded.

You would think True would be this serious about his own team...........Wheres the OWNED pics with the donkey getting kicked int he nutts True????

Oh I get it...In order for us fans to feel proud and maintain a strong sense of pride we must look at other GM's/Franchises who make equally bad mistakes when it comes to cap mismanagement.

Even if Otis Smith signed Lewis to a half billion dollar contract it doesn't make I SAY UGH any less of an imbecile.

You further confirm where our standards are at.

They sure do but that's one of the advantages of keeping your expiring contracts.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Rashard Lewis formally joined the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, leaving the Seattle SuperSonics after nine seasons when the teams completed a sign-and-trade deal for the high-scoring forward.

The Magic sent Seattle a conditional second-round pick, while the SuperSonics earned a trade exception believed to be in the $9 million range.

Lewis agreed to terms with the Magic earlier this month, yet no deal could be closed until Wednesday, the first day that the league's free agent moratorium was lifted. The six-year deal -- Lewis agreed to a five-year pact, but the sign-and-trade allows an extra year to be worked into the contract -- is expected to be worth at least $110 million.
"Rashard is a young, athletic forward and a proven scorer in this league," Orlando general manager Otis Smith said. "We feel his skills will be a tremendous addition to our team and we are very excited to have him join the Magic family."

So from various sources I've read it's $127mil(Sonicscentral) $126mil(UK), $124mil(UK), $118mil & $100(Realgm) $110mil(Insidehoops) LOL!

To be quite honest.. with this signing, I'd no longer like to be in the Magic's position. For 2 years I've been saying how I'd easily trade our roster for theirs but now with Rashard taking up an unbelievable amount of the cap, I'd stay away. Rashard is a nice addition for them but not at that extraordinary price and with that price-tag, it means no more Darko. I think it's a bad move for the Magic.

I thought he was going to sign for $85mil no matter where he ended up. He was coming off a $60mil contract and he improved as a player over the course so obviously he was going to get a substantial raise, but yes he's overpaid.

On another note...

It's amazing how Seattle rebuilt their franchise in a matter of 3 weeks but we can't rebuild here because it's just impossible to do.

"Rebuilt" is the last word I'd use to describe the Sonice right now, especially after Durant's first few outings as a pro.

I wouldn't say that they're rebuilt but they certainly have pieces in place that the Knicks don't. Specifically a franchise talent in Durant.

Anyone that wants to dismiss Durant, especially after a few glorified pickup games, has no idea what they're watching.

Premature in the word chosen, I meant they've almost completely laid the groundwork. They tore down their franchise in a matter of weeks. In 2009/2010 they'll be set. They won't be saying for 5yrs they are an unfinished product like we have been.
