DJ- I got the first slingbox when it first came out- had a ton of trouble setting up with firewalls, vpns, etc- but finally got it to work and used it a few times- mainly travelling.

That first slingbox must of gotten fried, because I couldn't get it to work.

I went out and got the new pro one- and installed the trial software on my treo 700p

On my phone, the signal constantly cuts out- almost to the point that its worthless and I don't use that anymore.

At work, when I sling, it will run for a few mins and then stop- I don't think they have enough juice here.

I find it most useful at home- I can sling on my laptop while the wife watches top chef or whatever she's watching- mind you, the signal is coming from my home office upstairs.

I think it would be awesome if sling could create a web based viewer- that way, for folks at work with firewalls and corporate security, you could watch a browser based version.

I like the idea of installing the slingbox in someone elses house. That would be cool, but then if a friend of mine is watching the knicks and his girl wants to watch the lifetime channel instead, I would be SO pissed.

Say if you have a mobile broadband card in your laptop. Could you install the slingbox that way and view your cable on your phone, etc somewhere else?

YES, if you have a mobile broadband card, you can pretty much watch it on your laptop anywhere, just like on your cell phone.

that sucks to hear. did you try their support? it's actually quite good. maybe they can help you with the treo. who is your provider? do you have any other software on it that may conflict? maybe you should uninstall all the extra stuff you have on it and try it then.

but you bring up a good point, it's also great to use at home. i don't have a tv in my kitchen, so i can just bring my laptop into my kitchen while i cook/clean etc. and the quality on your home network (in the same house) is pretty much crystal clear.

TIVO

What about it?
Sorry bout that I misread on the slingbox. Thought it was a TIVO knock off. Way better. Where are these usually sold?

they sell them at bestbuy, etc - but you can probably find a cheaper price online.

Wow...what a great way to split a cable bill between people (not legally though I presume).

One cable subscription + slingbox with 2 cable boxes. One for the person with the TV. One just hooked up in basement with the slingbox attached. You just cut your cable bill in half.

This may have been covered, but does the slingbox work with programs that you have TIVO'ed? I.e. can you watch taped shows any time? That would be pretty kickass cause you could save the hard drive space and be able to watch a quick show during your commute or somethign.

YES. you have access to your TIVO/DVR and all it's regular functionalities.

Its all going to depend on bandwidth- I've been thinking about spending the extra $10 per month for the boost on cablevision to see if that would help with the slingbox-

You can only access your DVR or your cable box, right?

I use the slingbox with my DVR, which is separate from my cable box. I can access both through it.

When it's working, the slingbox is great but I've been having problems with it lately. I've been traveling a lot lately and when it doesn't work away from my apartment, where the slingbox is, I can't fix it until I get back.

A buddy of mine lives in China. He put the slingbox at his parents house in upstate NY so he can watch US television in Beijing from his laptop.

what kind of cellular service do you need to subscribe to & what type of phone do you need in order to be able to access the cable picture on your phone? do you use verizon vcast, cingular, sprint, something else?

i'm guessing you need a PDA phone, no?

pda or smartphone with windows or palm. take a look at their website under slingmobile, you'll find a list of phones (i think). a regular cell phone ain't gonna work

and with the pda/smartphone, you'll need an unlimited data plan.

I didn't understand how this freakin thing worked and now I do thanks to you DJ

This is freakin great. I finally will be getting a new laptop this week so this is good timing. I'm gonna kill my cable bill by slinging my dads cable. Yippie!

On top of this I broke my blackberry the other day and was trying to figure out what phone to get. Now I can shorten the list with all this info.

remember...the slingbox is only hooked up to your cable box and router. you do not have to hook it up to a pc or anything. now when you are in a remote location, that's where you need a laptop, desktop, or cell to view it.

just some more shilling:

friday night, jimimou and i went down to atlantic city. all the way down (2 hour drive), we watched the yankees/mets game on it.

i had to leave earlier on saturday afternoon so i took the bus back up to the city. all the way up, watched the "lost" finale on my DVR and then switched over to the yankees/mets game at 1pm.

the quality was great. had no problems whatsoever with the cell phone signal (i have sprint) and it made the trip go by in no time.

btw, i watched all of it on my treo 700p cell phone.

this is the greatest toy ever made...
