i think JVG likes announcing too much to want to come back to this mess. he left in the first place b/c he hated dolan and didn't like the direction things were going. that was about $1 billion ago in money spent and maybe 300 losses, give or take.

Dolan would never have Van Gundy back. The internecine warfare between him and Grunfeld was the precipitant for some of MSG's current heavy handed media protection strategies, and the loss of Ernie was the beginning of the end for us. Plus Van Gundy quit.

I always liked Van Gundy, but I respect the argument of those who don't, and I have a feeling that includes Dolan.

Dolan still holds Van Gundy responsible for the firing of Grunfeld (a move that neither he nor Checketts wanted to make but didn't want to upset Ewing regarding Van Gundy). This is the reason why Dolan still calls 99 a horrible season. If Van Gundy would have played Spreewell and Camby, he wouldn't have fought with Grunfeld who proved to be right. The fact that those two were instrumental in the Knicks success only proved Grunfeld right. If that would happen, no Scott Layden and more than likely no Isiah. As a reward for supporting Van Gundy, he was repaid with him quitting on them when they declined. Yeah I would venture to say he will not be back.

but jumping between Camby and Ferry doesn't seem like sound coaching judgment.)

Actually, he was standing behind a few guys on the side lines and Ferry just happened to be next to him when the big right came a-flying. I still remember the video.
I'll never trust this' team again.

I don't respect it, because when VG was here, we had winning records. When he left, we been in the pits ever since. But the whole tihng is' messy and I don't see him trying to come back either.

That's rediculous! Those Knicks were NOT' going to beat a Tim Duncan and David Robinson team, no matter who they put out there! It's stupid to think so. The Knicks just about got swept in that series. The odds were heavily favored in San Antonios way. Tim Duncan was totally unstoppable!

What the hell are you talking about. The Knicks barely made the playoffs. It wasn't until Van Gundy was forced to play Camby and Spree that the Knicks went on a late winning streak. Dolan is talking about the fisaco that was known as "Team Turmoil" by every media outlet in NY. It got so bad, that press were reporting about secret meetings with Phil Jackson at hotels and reports that Grunfeld was ready to fire Van Gundy and assume coaching duties. The players were mouthing off in the press.
BTW, that Spurs series was closer than you describe. The Knicks were very competitive and acknowledge that the outcome may have been different if Ewing was able to play.

Pharezone, you stealing my #1 line on vandummy and the down fall of the knicks organization.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

From TrueHoop:

An amazing chronology from the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen of how Jeff Van Gundy lost his job. In a nutshell: he wanted a couple of days to think about returning. The owner wanted an up-tempo style. Van Gundy said the owner should have a coach he likes, which was interpreted as a blessing to search around a bit. Then Rick Adelman talked to Van Gundy and got his permission to talk to the Rockets. They all met in the Hamptons, and apparently the Rockets more or less fell in love with Adelman.
