They had four all-stars and the defensive player of the year. Those are stars. They're just not "flashy" stars with huge name recognition.

Rip and Chauncey weren't all stars at the time. Raweed was a former all star, but wasn't in that mode. So really, the only all stardom on that championship team was Ben Wallace and everyone else was just a VERY good player who knew and performed their roles perfectly. That Pistons team was a rare squad, and so rare, that they weren't able to repeat yet. We'll see if they can again, but I'm still giving the full edge to the Suns. They have been playing some defense this playoffs.

Otherwise, I agree, almost every other championship team has had a superstar two way player with either a supporting star, or excellent role players. The Kobe/Shaq Lakers had both.

presuming JVG is not retained by houston (this was the last yr of his contract), would anyone be opposed to isiah signing him as an assitant to fix the knicks d.

can the knicks D even be fixed?

JVG sign as an assistant? Not a shot in hell. Why would Dolan take him back for that matter?

This is more of a response to Playa's post.

Playa - I said it earlier this year and I meant it. If JVG did not get that team further this year he deserved to be fired. I stand by it. Sloan outcoached him.

I also read this morning that he is leaving coaching again.

I personally think he is a good coacg but he needs to evolve as the NBA has changed since he last had success.

Evolved into what? A bunch of lazy me first players who refuse to play the game the way it should be played? JVG is an old school coach, and so is Jerry Sloan. If anything, we need more like them, b/c the one on one style of play this league is displaying is getting REALLY old.

Not JVG's fault that Miami plays in the eastern conference and Riley's playbook doesn't work that well without Ewing. BTW, Yao is Curry soft worst than Curry actually. Curry is a fat 6 10 center that doesn't like to play defense or jump for rebounds while Yao is 7 6 center who doesn't try that hard to play defense and can't jump for rebounds. Forget the fact that Boozer and Okur outplayed the guy in the paint. When Deron Williams starts to out muscle you for rebounds you are having a bad night.

Yao is trying to take the pressure off T-Mac for the loss. nice to see a teammate do that but it's not like there isnt plenty of blame to go around that whole roster though except for a few guys. Shane Battier and Chuck Hayes did their thing, hustle, defend, rebound, hit some occasional shots. everyone else kinda blew chunx.

The fan and reserve voting varies a bit each year but they had four all star level players.

What are you talking about. They were considered a team of castaways. Ben Wallace and Larry Brown were considered the biggest stars on the team. Allanfan is right, there was nothing considered all star about their level of play. I think that they are more than capable of winning a title because of their defense.

Houston is similar to the Knicks, they need a physical athletic defensive Power Foward and better point guard (sorry Skip). With that they could finally advance. But as for now I think McGrady is on suicide watch. Last year you could tell he lost his love for the game a little. Now after another grueling 82 games he cannot pass the first round again in his career. It sux but I can't feel bad for the guy, nobody feel bad for Starbury.

So who says you need a superstar to win again?

T-Mac and Dirk.

T-Mac has yao too. Lol.

Name one championship team that doesn't have a star. Until then, the argument holds no water. There are no guarantees for winning, but there ARE guarantees for losing.

I like that wise comment Solice. Good one.
I'll never trust this' team again.

If JVG can get discouraged from were the Knicks were headed several years ago and leave, what would make anyone think he'd want to come back to this dissaster?

I think you're talking about a different (much earlier) season. Rasheed was a former all-star and was mistakenly considered a castaway but no one else at that point was. All four played at all-star level and got recognition for playing at the same level next season in the all-star game. I'm sure if the all-stars were determined after the playoffs, they would have had four or five all-stars because they did have four or five all-star level players.

4949, dude...........take some prozac already.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.
