I've noticed that Balkman is not being criticized for anything he did last night. Is it because?
He played with great heart and does not deserve criticism?
He is white

what criteria did you use to determine that Balkman was White?

bippity - the funny thing about this awkward and meandering thread about Balkman's "Whiteness" is that it overlooks the on-the-court attributes of Renaldo Balkman. So, please pardon me while I hijack your attempt at hijacking his favorable attributes, don my Red (Holzman) on Roundball hat and list the top 10 things I like about Renaldo Balkman:

10. His dreads flying in the air on the break almost make you forget Charles Oakley diving in the stands. Almost.

9. All the fans who booed him on draft night have either jumped on his bandwagon or reconsidered their former negative tone, for a moment.

8. He doesn't run the floor... he sprints the floor

7. He thinks every loose ball belongs to him

6. When he played in a shiftline with David Lee this past Summer they seemed to bond on the court and look for each other.

5. He's 6'8

4. If he had a jumper with range he'd be Scottie Pippen. Almost.

3. All he wanted was the opportunity to show what he could do. Isn't that what we each ever want?

2. The Philly double-double was not an abberartion. It demonstrates his high level of comprehension of multiple facets of the game. The best part is his understanding of playing the angles on offensive rebounding.

1. Nobody expected him to be this good and nobody really knows how good he can be

why misterearl, if i didn't know better i'd think you were assessing his basketball IQ.

so et me ask you your own favorite question: how do you determine if a player has a high bball IQ - or, his high level of comprehension of multiple facets of the game, if you prefer.

Unless we can determine a measurable criteria for that so-called "IQ" we will talk in circles until the 2010 NBA Playoffs and I ain't got that much time. Do you like the NFL's quarterback rating system?

c'mon, if you read my Top Ten the top 10 things I like about Renaldo Balkman, basketball IQ was never mentioned.

I think Balkman's gifts are a wonderful blend of intuitive, athletic and intellectual qualities that we will never comprehend in their depth and detail. He has trained his body to be a non-stop engine. He has a fire about his game which New York fans love as they loved John Starks, who was also disregarded out of college.

That is a dangerous combination.

His dreads provide the added rastafari crown that symbolize his driving heartbeat not unlike that relentless bass beat of King Tubby, Sly and Robbie or the perfect harmony of The Gladiators or The Mighty Diamonds...

(which our beloved Knicks must cohere as, in perfect rhythmic harmony to become a team)

... but that's another bedtime story.
