IMO, u could minimize the chance of teams tanking games by giving each team that doesn't make the postseason an equal amount of ping pong balls in the lottery... that way you don't gain any advantage for being the worst team in the league.

I think the lottery has outlived it's usefulness now. On Mike and Mike in the morning about 3 weeks ago(when Doc Rivers tanked that game) they were talking about this. Mike Greenburgh had a great plan. It was that the team with the best record not in the playoffs gets the most balls in the lottery so it encourages winning.

I can't say it is a bad idea.

I said this years ago when the Knicks were pushing it for the playoffs but fell short. The teams who falls short of the playoffs should get the most lottery balls. Not the team that is the worst. Parity should have no business in the basketball. Make teams work for thier picks. If not then I think the teams with the best records should also be rewarded with equal number of lottery balls as the team with the worst record.
If the NBA wants parity then they should have it in every aspect including the draft.

then teams in the middle of the pack who would be the 5, 6, 7, 8 seeds would "tank" to get to Just miss the playoffs and play the lotto. no perfect system. It really should be set as this:

A combination of several things:

# of wins, strength of wins (Point differential), age of team / how many years that player has been on the team (established veteran teams should get cracks at younger players - this would provide squads incentives for BUILDING a team, and keeping a core of players together, and penalize teams for trades - but then the salary cap restrictions should be removed from trades - salaries shouldnt have to "match up" any more for players to be swapped for each other).

i honestly don't think many teams purposely tank. yea you'll get a lottery pick but what's the point if you get fired next season?

anyway, JVG can be a little over board. although he did say flopping is ruining the game, and I agree with that.

That's absolutely true. It's not just the Knicks. If your team has a losing season or 2, the first to go is the coach. Why would coaches tank on purpose?

Those without power don't tank but look at what teams do tank.
1) Pitino tanked in 97 as both coach and GM.
2) SA tanked when Pop moved on the bench.
3) Cavs tanked and fired their coach (Paxson wanted to tank but he still had to use the coach as a scapegoat, so he made some dubious trades to accomodate the process).
