never once did they say they would get UNDER the cap. and isiah told me point blank that he wanted to be over the cap.

cap management is a foreign concept to the garden, no matter what they say.

$10 mil over is the same as $50 mil over in terms of signing free agents. so it's moot.

The only cap management that is going to be done is getting from $60 million over the cap to about $10-20 million over the cap. That's it. Once we get to that point, IT will probably try to see if he can use our greater resources to trade for a superstar that is not working out on another team by using expiring contracts and our willingness to take on salary. Dolan has stopped that tactic with the payroll over $100 million, but I think that once it gets back down to about $80 million, Dolan might be willing to allow IT to make such a move.

$5 mil UNDER is the same as being $50 mil over.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Which is why it won't happen. We're not getting WAY under the cap unless by accident.

A team needs to be more than the MLE under the cap which is reasonable/doable. It also could be a matter of having enough room under the cap that when a team's FA are retained they don't hit the Luxury Tax. It makes absolutely no sense to be so far over the cap that a team pays the Tax while missing the playoffs. If a team makes the playoffs depending on a team's arena/ticket prices/tv revenue/merchandise etc etc they stand to make on avg I believe $5-10mil per playoff series.

When it comes to trades, being $5M under is a hell of a lot different than being $50M over.

It all comes down to flexibility in obtaining players. When you're this far over the cap, you have none. And when you throw in lottery picks in trades for overrated players, you have even less.

Good point I didn't think of that Isles

If Nate & Frye get resigned for quality contracts it would be a good thing as it would mean that they have stepped up. But if they continue on the path they are in now. They will be traded before they get resigned.

And by the time Curry gets to opt out. Im sure we will know if he is worth the contract that he will demand. If he doesn't improve his game mostly the rebounding department he can be traded as well. 2yrs from now we will know what we are getting with Curry.

Besides even if we resign all these players. We are not going to be close to the salary cap figure we are at right now and will have a ton of flexability compared to now. So even if we can't sign a FA out right. We would have a lot more flexability in trading one of our players in a sign and trade.

since we're so far over the cap, and can't get a superstar through free agency, we might as well trade our lotto picks so we can't get one that way.

Newsflash- we're at least five years out from being able to start building a championship squad.
