Robinson was rookie of the year in 1990: http://www.nba.com/playerfile/david_robinson/

He served 2 years in the navy before playing in the NBA.

In 89-90 the spurs were 56-26, up from 21-61 the year before---under LB!

It all depends on who the best players in the draft get to play with next year. How many of those #1's had players like Paul Pierce, Al Jefferson, Pau Gasol, Emeka Okafor, Gerald Wallace, Ray Allen, Michael Redd, Joe Johnson and even possibly Kevin Garnett to team up with in their rookie seasons?

In the last 10 years only 2 #1 picks had an above .500 record in their rookie year, Duncan and Yao. But they had help from Robinson and Francis respectively, both still playing at an all star level. This year Bargnangi's team might be over .500 and he has Bosh to thank for that.

If Oden and Durant go to teams with any of the aforementioned players, I guarantee that they finish over .500 next season.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

both Oden & Durant will need some time to get used to NBA level competition... if Dwight Howard hasn't been able to make his team a contender yet, i think it's fair to say neither of those guys will either for a year or 2 at least anyway... it even took Lebron a full year before he could get his team over .500 for the season.

That's completely different. Lebron and D Howard didn't have a teammate of Paul Pierce's caliber (plus a 2 way big man in Al Jefferson).

Lebron had 1 of the better C's in the game in Ilgauskas, a talented young emerging star PF in Carlos Boozer, & plenty of good veteran role players like Eric Snow, Ricky Davis, Jeff McInnis, Tony Battie, Eric Williams... plus some young players who were highly touted themselves in Darius Miles, Dajuan Wagner & DeSagana Diop (busts later on, but still they were highly regarded at the time)... the Celtics have their own fair share of unproven youth also, if you hadn't noticed... plus, he's freakin' Lebron James, probably the most hyped rookie player in the history of the NBA since Kareem.

i don't see that many dissimilarities w/the Celtics' situation to be honest, but i'm sure you'll find more since you love to play Devil's advocate.

that's basically repeating what i just said... but if you want we can lay a wager on it... i have the Knicks finishing w/a better record than the Sixers or Celtics next season & i'll put up a couple beers at a game late next year if ur up for it.

Don't we already have a bet going for something?

Let's revisit this bet after the draft.

If the Sixers get Oden I'll take the bet. If the Celtics get either I'll take the bet. In the Celtics case I might take the bet no matter who they get, if Pierce stays.

wasn't the bet we had going that the Knicks would reach the playoffs before the Celtics or Sixers?

I thought it was who wins a playoff series first.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I don't think you can compare what lebron had to what pierce has, boozer was in his second year as a pro and the veterans you mentioned where ira newble, mcinnis, ricky davis, are not what a young player needs. Jefferson looks like a better prospect than curry (better than z, by the way to start next season), and pierce is one of the games best, i don't like wally but if they get someone like oden who is just going to protect the rim, which is all he has to do they will be fine, i don't see how they won't be better than us to tell you the truth. They have improving prospects that play positions something we really don't. The only players that can really make strides are balkman, lee, and maybe to lesser extent frye. I don't see curry really improving that much to tell you the truth, and nate really thinks he is gods gift to the world......

I see an adjustment period for durant, but he is the best college player in the past 20 years, he scores from anywhere and is going to be able to put the ball on the floor and go by people....

i'm fine w/that too, but we might not know the answer to that one for a couple years.

Solace is right. That's what our bet was. If I win you buy me a couple of beers. If you win I get you an asian chick.

Wow... does everyone realize the Knicks are a losing streak away from making Dolan look like (a bigger) idiot? The Knicks apparently met HIS definition for "evident progress," but to consider the Knicks a lock for being great next season plus the other teams hitting gold in the lotto is just flat out silly.
