there was one play that stuck out in my head from last night:

jameer drives to the hoop, and eddy, instead of stepping up to challenge, stepped AWAY from him and looked to box out. he could've easily just stepped up and made the shot hard for jameer. instead, he shied away and nelson went in for an easy layup.

there was another drive, i think it was jameer or hedo, where eddy actually jumped BACK on the layup attempt.

the guy has no clue. i mean absolutely no clue. you can go to the local ymca and you'll see guys that know how to play defense or at least attempt to. he makes no attempt and he has nba coaches around him 24/7.

his post offense tho, is downright dominating. but his total absence on the other end of the court makes it very difficult for us to build a team since we need a MAJOR piece at the PF spot. not an OK one, but a MAJOR one.

Golden Boy DLee also did the same thing.

The thing about Curry is that he doesn't react quickly on defense.

He's good on offense because he's looking for the ball and he has control over what he does when he catches the rock. He knows if the ball is being passed to him, he'll do whatever it takes to catch it.

On defense, he doesn't anticipate defensive situations. He plays it safe. He might get solid position for a rebound, but he doesn't pursue the ball because he doesn't react quickly to unknown situations.

Hopefully... at some point in his career (hopefully sooner than later) he'll get a better understand of defensive situations and what to do.

I think Curry's got more real playing experience this season than ever before in career. Just him being out of the floor experiencing defensive situations will be beneficial to his overall development.

Think about how long he's been able to play in games and how effective he is late in games. He looks just as fresh at the end as he does at the beginning. That alleyoop dunk for the win and last nights drive to the hole, showing all kinds of speed and agility. Curry's problems are mostly mental. He has to learn how to anticipate things better on the defensive end. He's spent his entire career only thinking about offense and so he's really behind on defense.

Still he's a HUGE impact player for this team. Don't go by any +/- stats, which really aren't gonna tell you anything when it comes to this team. If you use your eyes you can see how much different this team looks when he's not in the game. The offense kind of loses focus and there's a lot of wasted east and west motion. We turn very much perimeter at that point. Don't underestimate the positive effect Curry has on this team.

Golden Boy DLee also got 16 rebounds. I think people around here universally agree that Lee isnt a strong defender. What you get from his though is hustle, he gets his hands on balls (deflections) and he cleans the glass. When Lee is in the game teams dont get 2nd chance opportunities.

Wake up. All people want around here is effort. I dont dog Frye do I? He's got his problems but effort isnt one of them.

Kam.. tell me Eddy works hard on defense and on the glass. I'm not saying he's good, just tell me how hard he tries. Go ahead.. tell me he plays hard on both end. Lets see you write it and I will make it my sig.

this is true...but it could also be a byproduct of basically just standing around on the other end of the court.

LOL. The second one you are thinking of was on the Hedo botched dunk attempt. Curry actually went backwards instead of trying to block the shot.

Bringing Lee into this is beyond stupid. Fish said it right, Lee is out there working hard on both ends of the floor, hustling, getting loose balls and cleaning the glass. The keyword of that statement is that he does it on BOTH ENDS. Lee is out there trying along with Frye and a few others, and while I don't think Frye has come close to living up to his draft status, I'm not going to knock the guy for effort because he does try and I'm glad he does. I just don't think he's that good and I never thought he was either. But thats another topic.

Eddy doesn't give one iota of energy on the defensive end of the floor and often times that leads to rebounds and points for the other team and people have a problem with that and RIGHTLY so.

You guys just need to be fair in your critique. David Lee also goes #2 sometimes. I hate seeing these posts bashing Eddy Curry all the time. Its gone too far. After a win we have several threads bashing EC, and people bring up these examples from the game to bash him. Fine. I am not defending those plays by Eddy. I'm just saying you guys make too big of an issue out of his turnovers and when I point out DLee made similar mistakes, i get all these folks all uptight like we're not allowed to look at DLee with a ctitical eye, as long as he hustles everything is okay. Is that the rule now? As long as DLee gets X rebounds i should shut up? Thats the same thing as saying as long as EC gets X points you should shut up.

We're # 1 in Reb's
We're # 2 in Reb Diff
We're # 2 in FTA's
We're #10 in PPG

All these things are positives that actually factor into why this team has been more competitive. Why are you even worrying about Curry's weaknesses, when as a team we're doing VERY well in many areas. Just making an improvement in our TO's alone would make a HUGE difference in our winning %. Teams get too many easy points due to our TO's. That has a way of weakening the defense. If Curry managed to get 1.5 blks per game that would be nice, but I don't think it would have the effect on the wins and losses that so many think it would have. What he needs to do is just get his hands up more and contest more shots, without drawing too many fouls. He's too big and bulky to try and block every shot like some guys do. It's more important he stays on the floor than to go after lots of shots and risk foul trouble.

TMS- you pretty much summed it up. We need to surround Eddy with defensive minded players with good BB instincts to put his offensive prowess to good use. Put Curry back on that Bulls team, and they "pick em" with Detroit in a best of seven.

It's obvious that Curry is a big man that was forced to play the game because of his size. He lacks the BB instincts of man who has played the game and has been a fan since a toddler. He's still learning. His defensive instincts are obviously still behind his offensive instincts which still need more polishing. Curry is also not an explosive leaper either

If Curry blocked out and/or attempted to play better D (blocked shots or even GOING for blocks), we may be able to win more.

I get Mike's point.

He's saying Curry's hurting our chances at winning RIGHT NOW b/c of his liabilities on defense and offense.

I'd agree if he was a 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd year player, but he's a 10 million per, 6th year big man. That would be insulting to him and the fans.

At this point we just have to hope he works on his weight and gets better, period.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

Eddy Doesn't want t get in foul trouble, it's not that he is stupid. He got out of the way of jameer(don't knw where the box ut came from) and just followed Hedo to the basket(Hed thought he would jump and missed the dunk). I saw both plays and if yu watch them agian it isn't him being dumb, it's him nt wanting t foul. And David Lee will be a major power forward, take a chill pill man.....

I think the best point Fish has made about Curry is about his rebounding. There is really no reason Curry shouldn't be grabing 10 or more rebounds a game. Even if his defense doesn't come along, he has the size, quickness and atheltism to grab rebounds though he deosn't have the hops. Good positioning and focus can get him there.

Curry being the main man is all still kinda new to him. This is the first yr of him being the main man. So im holding out on to much critique and want to see how he develops and handls being the main man in yr 2. I wasn't expecting him to ever develop this much offensivily after I saw him last yr. So who am I to doubt what he can do going forward.

having guys like D Lee & Q Rich snatching up every rebound they can get their hands on probably has something to do w/why Curry isn't grabbing a few more... he's not a great rebounder & never has been, but this season he's putting up his career high in that category (mostly due to his extended minutes i realize)

like i said, if he can drop 15-20 lbs in the offseason, he'll have a lot more bounce & be able to get up for some of those rebounds more often.

Seriously, if Curry played nothing but token D, BUT put seriously worked at boxing out AND attacking lose balls he would be an elite player. You would be talking about a guy giving you 20/10 on 60% FGs and getting opposing bigs in foul trouble.

what irks me is its clear most times he doesnt even try.

If we traded 2 lottery picks and were paying Lee $10mm a year you would hear similar scrutiny, just like you heard it from about Marbury, just like Ewing got it, just like Eli gets it.

I would think most 3rd graders would grasp why. Some are slower than others
