While Thomas dashed any expectations the Knicks would make a trade, the Daily News reported the team is exploring the idea of acquiring Drew Gooden from the Cavaliers, which is not inconsistent with Thomas' recent statements. Thomas didn't say he wasn't trying to make a deal, just that he didn't necessarily see one materializing.
A deal with the Cavaliers would be complicated because of the contracts involved, and it might mean the Knicks would have to take back someone like Larry Hughes ($13 million), or the Cavaliers taking back someone like Jerome James or Steve Francis. But it can't be ruled out.
Francis, Malik, Frye, Nate, CHI's 1st rd pick
for
Larry Hughes & Drew Gooden
seems a little lopsided in the Knicks' favor in terms of talent, but it does take a full year of max salary off their cap in 2009, which the Cavs could then commit to Lebron if he ever decides to opt out of his contract after the '08/'09 season... Steve Francis has played a little better than expected the past 2 games, but his health will always be a concern.
Good trade? Yes or No?
