This is blasphemy if you are Knick fan..He didnt want to coach a Knick team in transition...He got a very good GM fired in Grenfeld...Are you guys not MEN...Do you not remember??????

Seeing the last 5 years it would appear that JVG was the smartes of them all by bailing on the team.

Teams fire coaches all the time (we do it at a high rate) but when a guy claims he is fried and walks he is some kind of traiter. He did what was best for the team by leaving, and recognized what idiots his management was.

Regarding Camby and spree, he wanted spree off the bench until he had a chance to work it thru. Trading Oak from underneath him JVG got instead a very timid fragile Camby who drove him crazy with inconsistancy. He loved Oak, as did most around here.

JVG was not the whole problem. YOur talking Blastphemy like it was him who broke up the 73' team or somthing. The team as he put it by then was very "Flawed".

Regarding the 99' season (shortend) and the playoff run one must put some cred on the coach for making the finals. It took some luck. And luck would have it for JVG. As I see it, he was toast. Grunfeld was fired for some good reasons in April before the playoffs started. YOu don't fire a coach just before the playoffs! JVG was likely on his way out also but making the finals kicked in a two year extension and we were stuck with him. Dolan wanted to starphuch with a new coach but one really does not fire a coach after making the finals.

Synopsis: JVG was not a god, but certainly not like he bailed late in the season nor left a core group either. Dolan stil paid him is full contract than let him coach anywhere else. In fact, fans saw him as a sub coach anyway yet there were other teams willing to pay him top rate and give him lots of respect. Professionally it was a very smart thing to do.

Bring him back? I'd do it in a heartbeat! He is better than Isiah!

Nolad, we gave Van Gundy his start to coaching...The Knicks organization made him...If wasn't for Pat Ewing endorsing him he would probably be Riley's side kick still...Actually I glad he left...He has proven he isn't that good of a coach..Just yesterday on SAS they were saying how bad he was as a coach..Good riddance...Better than Isiah???...Van Gundy has never drawn up his own play ever in the NBA...They were all Riley's defensive plays...He had no clue on offense..They were thinking about hiring an offensive coach remember...You can have him...Just not on the Knicks..Thank God Dolan has a long memory...

Where does JVG get off bailing on a team in decline..Is he Riley, Brown ,or Jackson??...Houston believed the hype and is paying for it now...

holfresh, X's and O's aside, - van gundy DOES get his players to play hard and play defense.

and to his defense in houston - what % of games have yao and tmac actually played together since they traded for mcgrady? like 50-60%?

DJ..One more thing...We had Doug Christie on our team under JVG..Do you remember???...He refused to play Christie...Reason???..Glad you asked...JVG went to the press and said that Christie was a bad defensive player...I remember arguing with a co-worker how does Jeff know if he doesn't play him...We traded Christie to the Raptors then he went to the Kings...He made the NBA all defensive team...This is no joke, it true...My friend at work then said because JVG said that, Christie decided to work harder on defense..

JVG = Lawerence Frank = JVG...Please guys....

So you don't like young little promoted assistants?

JVG made chritie into a good NBA player it sounds like.

We did not play rookies back then.

I don't like SAS, he tends to sensationalize everthing that comes out of his mouth.

If he don't like Jeff, thats good, but I do. He was not perfect, but he was a home grown KNick coach who got the gig and did well with it..

Yeah, I don't like young assistants that suck...Christie played a grand total of 35 games as a Knick in two years, he was hurt a little as well....avg about 15 pts a game after he was traded to Toronto...

JVG would have been fired if not for that big shot by Houston...He was a sure goner...It was a big deal back then...Who is JVG to have the balls to quit the Knicks because they were a mediocre team???...He never won anything or proved he could play a different style than Riley.. What is the fascination really...

Man, I remember it like it was yesterday...I knew when Houston hired him he was overrated...He is proving that now....

I was always a JVG fan, but holfresh is 100% correct in his posts. There were things jvg did as a coach that were maddening. I love him, but if ALlan misses that floater in 99, we would've had Phil Jackson as our coach instead of him going to LA.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Well you guys just removed all doubt as to who the Isiah moles are. You guys go out of your way to praise Isiah but you're going to criticize one of only 3 Knicks coaches who have gone to the NBA Finals.

JVG has actually had success with the Knicks but he's criticized.

Isiah has no success to speak of but he's praised without fail.

Thanks for coming clean guys.

JVG got to the finals because it was a shortened season...The irony of the entire season was they got there riding the coattails of Camby and Spreewell, the guys he didn't want to play...So credit him all you want, I can see the forest from the trees...

Imagine, he is still living off that season...He should be funneling money to Spee and Camby..

The regular season was shortened, not the playoffs. If the regular season hadn't been shortened maybe they work out their problems earlier and have a better seed and don't have to run the gauntlet the way they did. Poo poo it all you want but that was a hell of a coaching job. Certainly a lot better than what Isiah has ever done.

Wait, you're saying he refused to play players when he rode their coattails? That doesn't make sense.

Perhaps you didn't notice but VG is doing one hell of a job this season and nobody has brought up the 99 Finals in years.

JVG is doing a hell of a job this season or is TMac doing a hell of a job this season...It's a good chance that JVG won't return after this season...Seriously, I won't pay Jeff 5 mil a year to coach, but thats just me..He has never shown that extra something the good coaches get out of their players...He was never a X and O's guy...His novelty has worn out..

The Knicks play harded for Van Gundy because he was a young coach that work hard and long hours to get the job done...His problem is that he was never able to translate his hard work to the sidelines...He really had no concept of the offensive part of the game...He had a really good grasp of Riley's defense...He has two top ten players now...Let's see how far he gets...My guess is out the first round yet again...

If Isiah were doing as good of a job as JVG is doing this year, you'd explode in your pants and be looking to extend him for at least 5mil a year. But since its JVG it's just a novelty. Truly fascinating.

What would you say if Isiah as a coach had 45, 51, and 34 wins with TMac and Yao Ming on his roster??...

4 more years right??

You sure are picking and choosing your statistics.
04-05: Your best argument. Although both players nearly played a full season they lost in the 1st round.
05-06: Yao played 57 games. McGrady played 47. How is this JVGs fault?
06-07: Again both Yao AND McGrady have been injured ALL year long. How is this JVG's fault?

Don't let the facts get in the way.

Well let's see, you think that 39, 33, 23 and approximately 37 wins is cause for celebration so based on your scale a 4 year deal sounds about right.
