my realm of bball viewing doesn't start until 1987 (the first day queens got cable).

so my starting 5 of all time (that i actually saw play) are as follows:

magic
jordan
kobe
hakeem
shaq

Sorry, You can't have Hakeem and Shaq. Make the tough choices!

oohah

why not? hakeem was the pf on the 86 final's team.

Petit must have been one hack of a player. He's on your first and second team.

Petit is a mystery to me, because he just hasn't gotten the pub with my generation like those other guys.

My Dad always has him on his top-ten, and he has told me how tough he was, how he could really get up, and this one story about him playing with a cast on his arm and still busting people's asses.

What's up with some Bob Petit youtube?

oohah

i'm with your dad. his battles with the celtics in the playoffs were epic. guy was relentless tough and super-athletic. plus a monster rebounder.

i mentioned this before and got ripped for it but here it goes. the best basketball player ever for me is magic johnson. i know people are shouting jordan and robertson, however, i would say that jordan was the most dominant player ever and robertson the most versatile. magic was pretty much everything. the one advantage he had was the ability to play EVERY position well. That to me is the selling point for the best player. The basketball IQ of a player learning and doing well in every position is underrated and he has done that. it is hard enough learning one position let alone FIVE. He alone boost a teams ability and morale positively and not punching people if they miss shots ( ahem, jordan?). he has no real weakness though i know people will point to his defense. however, he played great defense along with cooper during the fourth quarter.

My starting 5 of all time (that i actually saw play) would be...
Magic
Jordan
Bird
McHale (Hate to admit this and Duncan in a close 2nd)
Ewing (Can't help it. If you take Ewing out of equation then I would say The Dream)

I haven't seen Oscar play...I have seen Jordan and Magic, they certainly deserve all the accolades they get...But please let's not forget Larry Bird in these discussions...One of my favorite players to watch...Now I argue a lot here with people who like to throw out the term "smart player"...Bird was one of the smartest players I have ever seen play...He knew when to take over the game and when to take the "dagger shot"...Talk about a player that made people around him better, man, he is right up there....I love Magic and Jordan just like everyone else, but Bird is right up there with them...He was the consummate team player....If I ever start a team, Larry Bird will always be on my first team in any era...

I hear you. I hated the Celtics but I loved Bird's game and he has the intangibles.

Hondo was not a spectacular player by todays standards as he did nothing but play d, rebound, and was super clutch with a killer outside shot. All he did was win!

Petit was a scoring machine!

I think "Decade" squads make sense to capture the best of the era. Duncan is top 50 in most books for sure!

Marv, you have West down twice. Can we get some Clyde?

nalod is a registered 70's-celtics hater!
in the early 70's after russell retired they needed hondo to change his role and become even more of a dominant force. look at the seasons he put together:

70-71 28.9 ppg on 45%fg with 9 rpg and 7.5 apg.
71-72 27.5 ppg on 46%fg with 8.2 rpg and 7.5 apg.

along with the great d, super clutch ability and killer instinct that nalod noted. guy was a superstar, not just a cog in a great machine.

I am a certified Celtic hater!!!!!! Phuch the Redsox whining cuz they got all them Celtic banners! I would trade 5 Yank world series for another Knick title!!!!

Havlichek, Cowens and Jo Jo Phuching White have my ultimate respect but man I hated them!

BTW, Charlie Scott was way too cool for that team! He looked like awful in a celts uniform! They made few mistakes but trading Westphal was one of them. White man in a brothers game in Boston would have worked!

74 celts pissed me off cuz they just seemed to bounch back after Russells retirement and win it all again! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Accept I always liked Don Chaney. Go figure.

Now the Bird/Mchale teams were ok cuz they at least Tiny, Pistol and DJ. ANd I hated the Lakers even more!!!!!

Havlicek was the man! Dude was a stone cold killer!
