I was thinking Laettner too but the article said it's not a prominent name. Laettner is still a pretty prominant name.

Last week, a Chicago Sun-Times "blog" mentioned that a former NBA player was going to come out of the closet on Valentine's Day, because that's a day for love. (Or desperate loneliness and regret. Pick your poison.) We'd heard this rumor, and some others have been speculating as well, and every source we've talked to says the player is ... former Utah Jazz and Orlando Magic "center" John Amaechi. Underwhelming, we know. Amaechi is a Penn State grad, a Brit and purveyor of his own Web presence.

The book, being published on February 20 through ESPN Books (which means you're going to be hearing about it non-stop for a week, and then you'll never think about it again), is available for pre-order on Amazon and is called, amusingly, "Man In The Middle." (ESPN Books, when we called then -- see, we call people! We're reporters! -- neither confirmed nor denied that Amaechi was the player.)

As far as athletes go, Amaechi -- a former Academic All-American who was once traded for Glen Rice -- isn't the most breathtaking name, but if he's the guy, he's sure to have some fun tales to tell from the road. From all accounts, Amaechi is a classy, intelligent fellow. He also has a cool accent.

But anyway: Yeah. This is what you're gonna see on ESPN every day for the next couple of weeks starting on Valentine's Day. Synergy, baby.

hmmmm. i remember him getting paid real big bucks at one point and never delivering.

ESPN, because it will make them money and give them a non-story to report after the Super Bowl and make a big issue about it for a week or two before they can focus on the NBA all-star game and Spring Training.

ESPN sucks.

I agree. The media in general will make a big deal about anything like this so they can make cash. The gay rights groups will run around like it's a big victory. The bigots will attack. And the rest of the world will go on living their lives with no misconceptions. There are gay athletes. can we move on.

i'm interested. he's a pretty worldly sophisticated guy. his take on being in the league could be a good read.

The way I see it... all nba players smack eachother on the ass...which in any other situation would still look really gay

John Amaechi, a former player with the Orlando Jazz and Orlando Magic, has become the first NBA player to come out as gay. Amaechi will announce publicly for the first time that he is gay on an episode of ESPN's "Outside The Lines" to air Feb. 13, Outsports has learned. His book, published by ESPN Books, "Man In The Middle," in which he chronicles his NBA career and directly addresses the travails of being a closeted professional athlete, will be released the following week.
