Do you believe him? Kobe says 'I might have picked the Knicks'. But he had more money coming his way by staying in LA with the Lakers. The clippers offered Kobe the MAX and then some but he chose to stay home.

why go to the clips when you can play for the lakers? that's like signing with the nj nets instead of the ny knicks. marquee baby. and ny knicks are marquee. shaq or kobe would've been a knicks in 2004 if we had cap room.

but moving on, the lebron, melo, wade, bosh contingent come up again in 2010. that's what we must target for now. the dwight howard/ok4 crew is not in the cards b/c of curry (unfortunately).

That should be the game plan- to build a solid foundation of energetic, skilled roll players who mature around 2010 such that a LeBron can depart Cleveland and sign outright or in a forced S&T to the Knicks squad that complements him.

Who knows what Miami will look in 2010- Wade might be happy to leave.

I think what's more important than salary cap space is signing players that actually give you production that matches their salaries.

Exactly, dont overpay people. We have to be careful with this with Lee/Frye/Nate....... I have a feeling we are going to loose 2 of those 3

That's a big moment for us. I think people are all assuming that all these young guys are going to automatically re-up with us. As an organization I think we need to show all our young guys that we are building towards a winner so that we can acutally pay them fair market value and keep them, instead of being forced to overpay just to keep them on the roster.

If cap space meant so much then why didn't the coveted Brian Grant sign with the Knicks after the aggressive courtship?

It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that bling

Brian Grant? We talkin about Brian Grant? Briant Grant? Cmon, Brian Grant?

Seriously. Misterearl usually presents good concise arguments (even if I disagree with them). This one was just WEAK, though.

I still don't see where it is a weak argument. We only had the MLE for Brian Grant, too. What does that have to do with anything?

cap space, fiscal responsibility, roster flexibility.. they are all about one thing: opportunity.

Its difficult to measure them with absolute value. Some teams have them and flounder, other teams use them to turn a team around instantly.

However, every team that makes a monster trade, or signs a superstar player like a Shaq, Arenas, Nash, Odom, etc you can say they had an opportunity to do so.

I think most are in agreement that above all the Knicks desperatly need that main player that they can build around. What are our opportunities to aquire such a player? Draft? Cap space? A roster full of managable contracts or undervalued players?

People can poopoo this all they want, but ISiah's spending and constant overpaying for every asset he has has have killed his opportunities and will continue to do so.

NY needs someone as cokcy and confident as Kobe. Not everyone can play here but those that can wouldnt want to be anywhere else.

Dude looked like his birthday got cancled when they told him he couldnt play yesterday.

LOL! What a great line.

I agree with the rest of your post fully as well, Fish. You never know whats going to happen when you have cap-space, theres always the teams like Atlanta, Clips, etc. Those teams have very poor management who have made terrible signings as well as draft picks. There is nothing better than having good management, with salary cap space, because you will reap the benefits.

I don't get what it had to do with anything either. That's why I called it weak! Maybe "confusing and weak" would have been more accurate.

Come on...Are you guys really blaming Isiah for the Kobe for not signing...Kobe would not have signed with the Knicks anyway because the Knicks could not have offered as much money as the Lakers...No team could have paid Kobe 20 mil per except the Lakers...Kobe forced the trade of Shaq to have the team to himself...You guys would blame Isiah for the weather if you could....

here's question:

frye, lee, nate, balkman, mardy, quentin, jeffries, jamal, curry, 2007 #1 bulls pick and no cap room until 2011

or

frye, lee, balkman, mardy, ariza (re-signed via MLE), 2006 #1 (alrdidge/t2/morrison/gay/roy), 2007 #1 ours, and major cap room the summer of 2009

which would you prefer?

I don't think anyone is saying that Kobe would have signed....just that the opportunity could have been there.

How can you say that he wouldn't have signed? You don't know.
