I really don't understand how this works in terms of salary...The rules have changed capping how much a young player makes when he first signs a contract...In Lebron 4th year in the league he is making 5.8 mil per as the number one pick...Do you really think Lee is a 10 mil per year player in his 4th year...But I just wanted to highlight the position the Knicks will be in at that time...Also, if you are asking me would I rather have Lebron or the package of Lee, Frye and Nate, well this to me is a no brainer...I know lots of people here are crzy about DLee but come on....

That will be Lee going on his fifth year, not his fourth. Lee, Nate and Frye will all be up for qualifying offers. Qualifying offer is one year. The five possibilities are: 1) Player signs qualifying offer. The contract is only for a year, but at the rates you were talking about earlier. This only happens when player is going to leave the team the next year. 2) Player signs an offer sheet with another team, and his team doesn't match. The player goes to team 2. 3) Player signs an offer sheet with another team, and his team does match. Player stays with team 1 at the rate the other team offered. 4) Player signs multi-year deal with current team. 5) Team doesn't offer qualifying offer by deadline, player becomes unrestricted free agent.

That's it. Has to be one of those. Expecting three qualifying offers is unlikely.

Sure, I'd take LeBron over those three, unquestionably. I think most here would. But, do you think our GM is going to feel the same way?

OK got it tks...another thing...Is it possible to sign a player with the team being under the cap then matching any restricted free agent offers being offered for your players? or are their restrictions or different time lines when free agent signings and restricted free agents are being signed during the same offseason...

Here's a good website on it: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm

I don't think there's any loopholes like what you're talking about. If the Knicks were to sign a player who brings them within say $2 million of the salary cap, they won't be able to go over that, even if it's for resigning their own players. That's why when you make a big free agent run, you really, ideally, want to be $20+ MM under the cap. That's why Jared Jeffries and Jerome James signings are killing us right now.

Btw, this is the reason why some of us said Isiah seriously f'd up when he added so many big salaries. If we could've not added any big salaries during the first three years he's been here, we could've made a play for LeBron this coming offseason (if LeBron would take the qualifying offer, knowing that we would be waiting in open arms for him to sign). The benefit to that would've been that Frye, Lee and Nate would all still be in the middle of their rookie contracts, so their salaries would be minimal against the cap.

The one thing I never understood was this. You can sign your own players to anything you want, whenever. So if you're under the cap, why not just go after LeBron first, sign him, and then sign you're other guys?

I don't think you can do both in the same offseason. Across two offseasons, yes.

The amount of their last contract year, or qualifying offer count against the cap. Your own players would have to be renounced before adding the FA

As Isiah said, "Nobody comes to watch the salary cap".

And as misterearl says, "It's not your money".

With logic like that, it doesn't matter if it affects their flexibility when it comes to acquiring players.

Call me crazy but if Isiah adds no salary and develops the team for the next two years...The New York Knickerbockers will be sporting a tidy 41.2 mil team salary for the year 2009...Coincidently, Bron Bron will opt out of his final year with Cleveland in 2008/09, I guarantee it...The salary cap for 2006/07 is now set at 53.135 mil...It could be at 55 mil in 2009/10...

Why bring this up now....Watching a Cavalier game this week...The announcers was wondering what is wrong with LeBron this year...They said he seemed disinterested this year...Could Lebron be tired of Cleveland...If he is, there is no better Arena on the planet to display his dazzling array of skills..

A move like that would be just what the NBA needs...This automatically makes the Knicks a contender in the east if all things remain the same...Maybe I'm dreaming but I can really see this happening...Any thoughts???

Interesting...I've been thinking about this for a couple of years now.

The way I see it, assuming Curry, Q, Crawford and JJ fatty all exercise their player options, and the Knicks retain Frye and Lee but NOT Nate, we will have at least 7 players under contract (JJ skinny has a guaranteed year) for around $49 million. This, of course, does not include other players we will pick up before then. But, we could deal Q and/or JJ fatty, who will have expiring contracts.

And don't forget that we are free to go over the cap to eventually re-sign our own free agents (i.e. Curry, Lee, Frye).

So makes sense to me!!!

Now all we need is for Dolan to sell the team ASAP to make it happen.
