dice was 20 & 10 before the injury.... IF dice was healthy, he, h20 and spree dominate the east (possibly ECF's)

when Layden made the deal, McDyess was reduced to being an 11 & 6 player... he had already undergone a season ending knee surgery in DEN & missed a ton of games during his rehab that year... i hardly call that a wise gamble to be taking w/a #7 pick & a borderline Allstar calibre player like Camby who averaged a double double for us that season as our starting C.

if you want to equate the Curry gamble w/the one Layden took on Dice, it doesn't even compare to that level of ineptitude IMHO... at least w/Curry you didn't give up any proven commodities, & the risk was more worth taking in Curry's case because you were getting a player who was widely considered to have the potential to become a Shaq type presence down low w/more seasoning & the right coaching, & who at 22 years of age, was pretty much just reaching the beginnings of his overall potential at the time the trade was made... not like Dice who had pretty much reached his potential & was rehabbing from a career threatening injury on his knee, a guy who relied heavily on his athleticism to be productive.

if you think Isiah doesn't have a plan, what kind of plan did Layden have making a move like this?

i disagree on the level of gamble. at the time of the trade, camby never played more than 60 games for us and was forever hurt. dice had 11 & 6 b/c he missed that entire season b/c of the injury and came back the final month of the year where he averaged that amount. thirdly, we didn't give him a 5/6 year deal, we had 2 years remaining. all things considered, we gave up a perpetually injured player and the #7 pick for dice. it was a bad deal b/c of dice's injury...but i think it would be the equivalent of giving up camby + #7 pick for amare after last season when they shut him down after 4 games. you have no idea how these players were going to come back.

curry had pure motivational and weight issues PLUS a heart ailment. it's not losing the guy for a season or more, but possibly him, god forbid, dropping dead on the court. and b/c the health scare was not bball related, it cost us an uprotected #1, 2 #2's and an unprotected swap.

you have to look at the deal at the time it happened, not in hindsight.

believe me, nothing i'm saying here i haven't said at the time both these deals were made... it's not hindsight when you have the same opinion about it now as you did then.

as for comparing Dice's situation to Amare's, i think taking a risk on Amare would have been a more palateable choice because of the age difference (Dice was 28 years old at the time he got traded here, whereas Amare was only 24 this past offseason)... even still, i would have had to think twice before trading away a #7 pick in last year's draft along w/Camby for Amare Stoudamire who was coming back from rehabbing his knee.

Whoa. Score for Allanfan.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I would love to go, but it's just not looking up for me this time. School is being a killa in the manilla.

The problem with the Dice trade was that Dice was not worth Camby & our #7 lottery pick. Im guessing Layden thought unloading Jax and getting the #25pick in the draft made it worth it.

Camby was an injury problem yes. But Dice just finished missing 2 full seasons of basketball, and had major knee problems. How were we not the ones in position of strength in the deal? Did he feel that Dice was not going to have any knee problems for the rest of his career?? If anything they should have been traded straight up for each other. Then you add in a #7 lottery pick, in which who knows could become a franchise type player. We should have gotten Van Exel as well in return for Jax & Eisley. And still took there #25 pick.

Keep Camby, draft Caron Butler, move Spree for a PF ugrade or PG upgrade. Buyout Jax who had 2yrs left. Keep Camby draft Wilcox, Now you have Camby,KT,Wilcox as the rotation in the frontcourt. Move Spree for Penny Hardaway and Joe Johnson.

The problem was Layden didn't add Dice thinking about a championship. When he added Dice he thought about how he could make the team just good enough to be in the playoff picture. Thats why he traded draft picks for Vets all the time. All he cared about was how he could get enough veterans like Mark Jackson, Howard Eisley, Shandon Anderson, Clearance Weatherspoon, Othella Harrington, Eric Strickland, Antoinio Mcdyess, Dikembe Mutombo so that he could just make the playoffs. He also drafted in the 2nd rd with no intention of even keeping the players he drafted.
